I beg to differ, people in pg are spending a lot, in fact more than what an ordinary kl guy would spend for a whole month.
why?
People here are too fancy on buying branded item. Even buying a handkerchief also must buy branded, especially the youngster, one of the example I would say super dry the jap brand or the pandora, stupid jewelry with no sense of luxurious. But yet due to it's brand, pg people flooded these shops when opening.  Back to kl, these brand is not even known to exist... coz kl and slg are still a lot of working class people. It is literary a place full of outsiders who go there just for work but not spend. Pg otherwise is vice versa.  People come here to spend not to work.
Why I know?
I am too from the middle region.

superdry is far from being luxury brand dude, and it is not a japanese brand. SuperDry is from UK.

pandora as well, pandora is like scheme, bait the ladies to buy the bracelet and they will be tempted to add on pendants later, brilliant business scheme I'd say. First in the market and triumphed greatly.

Also, there is a reason the luxury brands (e.g., LV, Prada, Chanel, Dior etc, these are really what you called luxury) are not coming into Penang, simply because there isn't a demand for it.

Even the retail market leader, Zara is not entering Penang.

Figures don't lie. When you look at...say example Uniqlo's turnover of Penang branches compared to say Sunway Pyramid. You'll see a massive difference of profit/sq ft

See how deserted the straits quay is currently? Because no people dines at there.

Sorry to say but you clearly don't have a great insight of the retail industry yet.

why don't build on penang island?

Ikea outlet requires large swath of land and island is not conducive for that.

The ikea & ikano power station mall will not be sold but will be leased out to retailers. Only the shop offices are sold to mainly the investor buyers.
