Kevin Smith's podcasts are starting to become a pretty solid source of insider information regarding the cinematic comic book industry. He was, after all, the one who first hinted at the armored, Frank Miller style Batsuit, which San Diego Comic-Con since proved true. He has a lot of eyes and ears in the industry, so even though his latest bit of speculation is just that - speculation - it's not hard to imagine he might have info that the rest of us don't.
Ready for it?
On his last Hollywood Babble-On podcast, Smith brought up the idea that Marvel's latest reboot of Spider-Woman (the controversy the derivative cover created notwithstanding) is to lay the groundwork for a future Spider-Woman standalone movie and his logic makes sense:
Here’s what I’m wondering though. When you’re saying Marvel that means the comic universe of course and the comics set the tone for what they do in the cinematic universe,” said Smith. “I wonder if they are redeveloping or bringing Spider-Woman back, because they’re like, ‘We can’t do Spider-Man as a movie, so maybe we can have Spider-Woman.’ In a world, where like everyone’s going, ‘make a Black Widow movie,’ maybe that’s where they’re headed with it, up the profile of that character. But I wonder if that character would be tied to the Spider-Man deal at Sony or if Marvel could use Spider-Woman in Disney movies. Somebody should look into that. First, Marvel doesn't decide to put the time and effort into rebooting long-dormant series lightly. When it happens, it's usually because there's a coinciding movie in development (whether it's been announced to the public yet or not). Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman hasn't had her own series since the 1970s. So why get her own series now? All of the major, progressive changes as of late have been to Marvel characters who already have appeared on screen, or who we know will appear on screen before long: Ms./Captain Marvel, Thor, Falcon/Captain America, to name a few.
A few weeks ago when Sony announced it had definite plans for a female-led spinoff from its Spider-Man universe, most fans speculated it would be about Black Cat. Makes sense as Felicia Hardy already showed up as Harry Osborne's assistant/enabler in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But a lot of people wondered if it would actually be Jessica Drew getting her own movie. Makes sense: A Spider-Woman for Spider-Man.
Buuuuuut not so fast. Researching the movie rights to Spider-Woman takes you down a dark and twisting rabbit hole more confusing than the whole "How do Fox AND Marvel both own Quicksilver?!" headache. The thing is, most people automatically assume she's part of Sony's Spider-Man's universe because, ya know...Spider. But Jessica Drew was actually a hell of a lot more closely related to the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. throughout her various story arcs, meaning she's fair game for Marvel. Basically, no one's exactly sure who owns the rights to Spider-Woman's character.
Is it possible that Marvel is trying to get the jump on Sony before they develop their own movie about a lady-wallcrawler? Spider-Man is one of Marvel's dearest properties and most iconic character, so perhaps this is Marvel's way of at least trying to replicate some of that on screen. You know, get a piece of that Spider-branding before Sony puts it all on lockdown.
One last thought: Spider-Woman would tie in real nice with the whole brand-new team of Avengers we now know Captain America will be assembling at the end of The Avengers: Age Of Ultron.

The mutant, he said, would definitely perish, but "it's really the manner of his death that matters".
Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso added: "He's Gary Cooper in High Noon knowing he's going down, only he doesn't know if he's going to go to heaven or hell when it's over."
Marvel advised fans to "grab a box of tissues", because "nothing will ever be the same for the clawed Canadian ever again – mostly because it's hard to change things for a dead guy".
"Wolverine's been tested in the past, and he's even come close to death on a few occasions. Back then he had his healing factor to pull him out of death's clutches, but now he's not so lucky," said the publisher on Tuesday.
But, with Spider-Man's Uncle Ben said to be the only character in comics to stay dead when killed, some still aren't convinced. Comics retailer Bev Morley of Mostly Comics in St Catharines told the Toronto Sun: "Give me a freaking break, nobody stays dead ... How can he? But it is generating a lot of interest. It's going to be very big-selling."

According to Badass Digest, these are the details from the first draft of "The Avengers 2" script:
"At the end of 'Age of Ultron' Cap will assemble a team that is a mix of familiar and new faces, leading forward into Phase Three. It's an exciting mission statement for Marvel Studios, letting audiences know that the Avengers team is more than just the guys who were in the first film. The make-up of that team is, technically, up in the air until that scene is shot (I suspect it's being saved for either scheduled reshoots or will be snuck into the schedule of 'Captain America 3,' which goes before cameras early next year), but Joss Whedon's script did indicate who would be on that team. I won't reveal all the names – and some have changed in between drafts, by the way – but one character who has always been in this new team is Captain Marvel."
If this was true, Captain Marvel's introduction may lead to the introduction of the Phase 3 Marvel heroes. But Badass Digest also reports that Marvel isn't really sure if this is the way they want to introduce Ms. Marvel in the movie franchise and later, a solo film. SOS
