Need offroad capabilities or not ??? If really need offroad, consider pickup instead, it is cheaper.
I don't think Santa FE can do offroad. It is not body on frame chassis.

Pickup wise, not really prefer as want to use as family car Currently driving avanza need to be careful and slow. Avanza sold, and that's why prefer SUV. Our company has 2 units of these SUVs, and we have covered a lot of mileage on these vehicles. Fairly comfortable during long journeys due to the high seating, and the bouncy but firm suspension soaks up the bumps and irregularities on the roads. Leather seats are quite comfortable during long journeys, quite thick. NVH is not too bad for a diesel-powered SUV. Diesel engine's noise is acceptable. There is an audible whining sound from the CVT during acceleration, but it is rather soft. ie. acceptable. A caveat, the Pajero Sport is the only diesel-powered SUV I have experience with. No experience with Fortuner or other equivalent diesel SUVs.

By the way, if you want a quieter vehicle, you may want to look at petrol version SUVs. Although the Pajero Sport is quite acceptable in terms of NVH, when compared to petrol vehicles, the (diesel) engine sound of the Pajero is loud.
The Ford Focus TDCI (Turbodiesel) which runs on diesel is quieter than the Pajero Sport VGT, but it is a sedan and not an SUV. Unfortunately, the Ford SUVs are all petrol versions.

Petrol version SUV like fortuner is 2.7, less torque compare to pajero sport. And I think the FC would be much higher The noise wise I think I can live with that. My home got a hilux, so, get used to that. Any focus tdci in malaysia? Did not see at any place. Hmm.. This post has been edited by tiewgine8039: Aug 31 2014, 05:25 PM

There is always the Ford Everest which is a 3.0 Turbo Diesel. In Peninsular Malaysia, roadtax is expensive, in East Malaysia, I think only half the price roadtax.

If you got the Hilux which is not the latest VNT badge ones, then the Pajero Sport pulls much more than Hilux. If you have the VNT version, then its almost equal. Family has a GLS version of Pajero Sport, 4WD, before the VGT version came out.

My colleague has the Focus TDCI and I sat in his vehicle several times already. It had been discontinued by Ford just last year I think. Okay, if you can live with the noise of the Hilux then I think the Pajero Sport VGT shouldn't be an issue as it should be quieter than the Hilux. Diesel-powered vehicles are usually preferred as the better designs are usually more fuel efficient than the petrol equivalents. The Focus TDCI's fuel economy is very good, compared to petrol vehicles. If I'm not mistaken it registers about 4 or 5 litres/100km. Pajero Sport VGT fuel economy is fairly good. Only bad thing is most petrol stations may not have diesel sometimes, and the handle of the diesel pump is usually quite oily, and the floor is usually tainted with diesel too. Not very clean conditions at the diesel pump stations when compared to petrol pump stations.

Didn't notice the Everest. That is one big mean machine. Looks like the last row of seats at the back is more spacious than the Pajero Sport.

If you have no issues with Hilux then the Fortuner 2.5 VNT will suit you just nice. Both using the same engine and spare parts should be ample in Sabah and Sarawak.

The petrol station wise is not big deal here. here diesel pump is just beside the ron 95 pistol pump. lorry and otherwise normally have own pistol pump. here quite number of diesel car, especially pajero sport, fortuner, hilux, ranger, triton, landcruiser, range rover...

I still think maybe more prefer VGT than fortuner, similar price but VGT offer more in power and "slightly" better spec.

That day i tested Fortuner 2.5 diesel, the turbo lag really noticeable, but once the turbo kicks in, the acceleration is so fun!
