The original Portsmouth Football Club was formed in 1898 after local team Royal Artillery fell out of favour. A meeting of five local businessmen and sportsmen brought together by solicitor Alderman JE Pink invested in an area of land which was to become Fratton Park. As original members of Division Three in 1920, the naval city's club flourished with the introduction of the Third Division (South) the following year. Pompey finished top of the 1923-24 table and 1927 saw a dramatic last-day promotion to Division One, beating Manchester City to the second promotion place by slenderest of goal average margins - 1/200th of a goal. The period of success under legendary manager Jack Tinn continued and saw FA Cup final appearances in both 1929 and 1934. But Tinn - who was in charge from 1927 to 1947 - helped Portsmouth get their hands on the famous trophy with a 4-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1939. After World War II, Portsmouth continued to be one of the leading sides in the country, winning back-to-back League Championships in 1949 and 1950. But they were unable to sustain that success and through the 1960s and 1970s the club was outside the upper echelons - and even had a brief stay in Division Four. But Pompey found their feet once again and recorded a series of elevations in the early 1980s, culminating in their first top-flight season in almost three decades in 1987-88. Relegation followed a year on and a series of managers attempted to restore the side back to former glories. After 16 years, Harry Redknapp - a Premiership veteran with West Ham - guided them back to the top with a flowing brand of football.

Portsmouth have finally completed the loan signing of Benfica midfielder Manuel Fernandeswith a view to a permanent deal.

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp has been chasing the highly-rated 20-year-old for much of the summer but has finally got his man.

Fernandes has been recovering from a groin injury since mid-July and is unlikely to be match-fit for some time. He had been linked with a £10million switch to Fratton Park in July but mid-summer reports suggested he failed two medicals.

Fernandes, who is a product of Benfica's youth system, made his first-team debut during the 2003-04 season, under then coach Jose Antonio Camacho.

He became a first-team regular the following season under Giovanni Trapattoni's stewardship as the Lisbon-based club won their first Portuguese title in 11 years.

The youngster has also represented his country at senior level, playing in the friendly international defeat to the Republic of Ireland in February 2005.

Manchester City striker Andrew Cole has passed a medical at Portsmouth and will complete a deal if he can agree terms.

Pompey have agreed to pay City a fee that will rise to £1m, depending on the 34-year-old's appearances.

And he is believed to have been offered an even better deal than he has at Eastlands - a two-year contract worth around £40,000 a week.

City wanted to keep the former Newcastle and Manchester United star but he expressed a desire to move.

Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie confirmed on Wednesday the club were interested in signing the former England international.

He had said: "Andy is fit and one of several options we're looking at."

Hajduk Split midfielder Niko Kranjcar is having a medical in Zagreb with a view to a £3.5m move to Portsmouth.

Kranjcar, 22, was being examined at Croatia's training camp ahead of their Euro 2008 qualifier with Russia.

Pompey have turned to him after missing out on Celtic's Bulgaria star Stilian Petrov who has signed for Aston Villa.

Kranjcar, who has been in Croatia's side since he was a teenager, starred at the World Cup and has been linked with Juventus, Real Madrid and Celtic.

He is the son of Zlatko Kranjcar, who was Croatia's coach at the World Cup but was replaced by former West Ham and Everton defender Slaven Bilic after their failure in Germany.

I guess they will definitely need some time to gel together, juz like last season when Pompey brought in new players in January 06 then only towards March/April where they start to gel and play well together.

Brazilian star Denilson is training with Portsmouth with a view to joining the ambitious Premiership outfit.

The 29-year-old is a free agent after failing to agree fresh terms with Bordeaux this summer.

The likes of Celtic and Tottenham showed interest over the summer but no offer materialised.

Now big spending Portsmouth are checking on the winger as manager Harry Redknapp looks at further ways to bolster his squad.

"We are taking a look at him," Redknapp told The Mirror.

Earlier this month Denilson was in talks with Saudi Arabian outfit Al Nasr about a move to The Middle East.

The club even claimed a deal was done, but it seems Denilson is still considering his options and the man who was the most expensive player in the world when Real Betis paid over £20 million for him, could end up at Fratton Park.

New Pompey supremo Alexandre Gaydamak is known to be keen on bringing some big names into the club and he will no doubt provide the finances for Denilson, should Redknapp decide he is a player he wants.

Milan Mandaric has formally announced his resignation as chairman of Portsmouth.

The Croatian-born businessman will step down following Monday's Premiership home clash with Bolton Wanderers - a match that can be seen live on Sky Sports 1.

Mandaric has been in a non-executive chairmanship role with the South Coast club after selling his remaining shares in Pompey to Russian millionaire Alexandre Gaydamak back in July.

The announcement brings an end to an incredibly successful tenure for Portsmouth, as Mandaric took the club out of administration in 1999 and helped lead them to becoming an established Premiership club in the space of four years.

With Pompey surviving relegation from the top flight last season, Mandaric began to relinquish his role in the club with his sale of shares to Gaydamak before deciding to formally stand down after Monday evening's game.

"My last match as chairman will be against Bolton and though it will be a very emotional occasion for me, I will leave immensely satisfied and happy about what I have achieved and whose hands I leave this club in," Mandaric said in a statement on the club's official website.

"Already Alexandre Gaydamak has made his own impressive mark on the club, which I fully expected and applaud.

"It is now right that a man who is fiercely committed to the interests of Portsmouth FC and its fans should be allowed to pen his own exclusive chapter, as he takes things to the new heights I know he will achieve.

"I am and will always be immensely grateful to the city which graciously bestowed upon me its freedom, and our wonderful supporters whose relationship with me has no equal.

"This is the established Premier League side which I promised when I came and from that establishment, there are now new heights to reach which Alexandre will take the club onwards and upwards to.

"This club and its supporters can never leave my heart whatever I go on to do in football, whether it be in this country or across the world, and both will always be part of me and my life."

Former Portsmouth striker Dario Silva has had his lower leg amputated following a car crash, according to the Spanish press.

The 33-year-old Uruguayan was left in intensive care after a serious collision into a column of street lights in Montevideo on Sunday.

He was put into a medically-induced coma after the incident and Doctor Mario Canela of La Espanola hospital has been quoted saying the right leg had been removed from the knee down.

"Silva's situation is absolutely not solved with the amputation. We are worried about a possible infection," Canela stated.

Silva played 49 matches for his country and was a member of the Uruguayan squad that played in the 2002 World Cup finals.

He has scored 15 goals for the South American nation and consequently joined Pompey last summer.

But the ex-Malaga and Sevilla man has been without a club since leaving Fratton Park in February.
