QUOTE(nemesis94 @ Sep 5 2014, 03:12 PM) $200 is pretty much the mid end type of keycap. It usually goes for $40~ retail with very limited available, so basic supply and demand. I do agree the aftermarket price is ridiculous. Well at least ur not paying for sharks fin

QUOTE(ainuddin @ Sep 5 2014, 02:46 PM) make some prototype to demo here. stop paying for ridiculous prices for them caps. OK, fine then, you have the money to burn, but never tell anyone else about it as it will just condone and confirm the price inflation. I havent started making a keycap yet..however I've started making something else...its CNC ready, but I just wanna do some design adjustments coz what I made looks almost like a TEX alu case. but here's a sneak peak at what I've done..just a quick rendering. based on the pic here, the case has exactly the same measurements to fit a poker 2 case...what I plan on doing is to find a suitable local manufacturer to machine a good quality aluminum block. still needs some tweaking, but at least there's progress.

QUOTE(yuktsi14 @ Sep 5 2014, 11:09 PM) is it going to be expensive? since the qty is small it depends on how much work i put into it...for now I plan on making one for myself first if budget is feasible for prototyping. If everything is ok and solid, then I of course I would offer to the peeps in this thread!

QUOTE(dadudeneverabides @ Sep 6 2014, 01:38 AM) Here I am trying to keep the cost down... and suddenly pops up a CNC alu case. How to make cheap? Well, it wont be as cheap as acrylic cases (or would it?). But based on my assumption at least due to the preciseness of CNC machining compared to acrylic cuts / injection moulding, you do kinda get what you pay for. Problem is whether there are enough people who are interested enough to jump in the bandwagon to lower the material cost and renting a machine to manufacture one. When I finalize my design I will share some pics here and see how it goes first. No need to worry about price first.

QUOTE(dadudeneverabides @ Sep 6 2014, 03:12 AM) I don't think CN will ever be cheaper than acrylic, but you can try checking the costs. yea it should be a lot more expensive. Anyways the stages I need to go through before getting to end product would be: 1. Reverse Engineer - Done 2. Redraw Product - In Progress 3. Redesign 4. Make Drawing 5. Quotation, Amendments & Costing 6. Fabricating 7. Finishing 8. Distribution This post has been edited by schokolade: Sep 6 2014, 04:16 AM

QUOTE(0168257061 @ Sep 6 2014, 09:36 AM) You are correct. What I mean is for that 300rmb "7075 alu" (cnc maybe?) is not expensive since he is mentioning about costs there. quality wise Yea of course everybody would love getting 7075 alu haha. Problem is the cnc mill. The machine must be well maintained if not the case will come out with many blemishes. Im not sure if i trust the local fabricator here because of this issue. Want to source aluminum blocks is one problem. Getting it made locally with good finishing is another problem. Nvm ill just prepare a nice drawing of my designs and we'll see how it goes. Test running one aluminum prototype would already cost more than 1k. Anybody willing to sponsor?

QUOTE(0168257061 @ Sep 6 2014, 11:28 AM) We already have one prototype, if you have been following this thread. You will noticed local made full aluminium, 84 WKL TKL case in 2-piece style. The cost of it is around or more. So you asked already for tex-alike also 1k? havent yet...but long time ago I had some friends who worked to operate some CNC milling. They said for a small block to be milled should usually cost about 300. But I have to source the alu block on my own since Im looking for a specific quality. But then their machine accuracy very coz the rarely do proper maintanence.....so I dont want to take the risk.

QUOTE(belfong @ Sep 10 2014, 05:11 PM) I don't like too many varieties. I don't want to have a rojak collection. That's why I focus on CC and BB. Looks like I have to add Mummy now. Sigh. then maybe you should put either your BB or CC aside and put only two varients on you topre! the leftover can let me borrow

QUOTE(belfong @ Sep 11 2014, 06:11 PM) Oh.. hmm.. that's a dangerous dark path you are walking there, brother. Watch your wallet I, too started with Gasmask. Then I move to BB, then CC, then decided I don't want too many variants and designed and sold off the Gas Masks. But BB and CC cost so much more.. so it is a dark, expensive path. I have since seen the light. Going retail now. So I will be very, very patient! Hehe thats cool! Btw do u have any leftover gasmasks? Or could u help consign my 3 gasmasks and trade them for a CC? Hahahahahaha. But yeah i feel that this hobby is gonna make some useless holes in my pants

QUOTE(belfong @ Sep 11 2014, 06:47 PM) I don't have any Gasmask any longer And no, I guard the CC fiercely! Besides, I doubt you have any use for a Topre CC.. How can u say that....i love Cc too u know. Besides, if i own at least 1, it would definately benefit me to one day make one keycap to share with everyone here. Besides thats what product designers like me aspire to do. I like their approach, if you learn to close one eye about their price in the trading market; their designs has been nothing other than a brilliant marketing scheme. Having to capture interest from veteran forumers from geekhack and deskthrity has boosted Cc's business into the no1 artisan keycap gimmick. Theres no doubt anybody can do like what they did, but he was one of the first keycap makers that follow the color chart and handcrafted them with a good story to tell, as well as his web of riddles into how to earn one of his masterpieces which has captured the eyes of keyboard enthusiasts around the globe. Genius. If i were him i would retain the same style of business until one day he decides to create another line. I dont know about you but i think people from bb or other keycap makers are still catching up to what cc has done.
