cheaper camcorders, like the old SD ones, doesn't need/have a high resolution sensor, so don't really need to engineer a complex and good lens to capture the detail for the resolution.

to put it simply in layman's terms, making lens that can capture 720x576 pixel is less complicated/cheaper than making lens that can capture 1080p image size.

well say for instance, we compare a cheap 1080p that can do 50x zoom, and a pro-grade camera that can do 5x zoom. assuming everything else are equal, most definitely the optics for the pro-grade cam is a lot better - usability, no chomatic aberration, sharper, smoother operation, no purple fringing, better lowlight capture, etc.

a simple way to view it, not necessarily true but generally this is the idea:

expensive lens:

check the lens shape and see how much more complicated the expensive one really is! you can have 1000x zoom even (just put the cam at the back of a telescope lah!), but it's not gonna be pretty biggrin.gif

dslr videography isn't that all cracked up to be. the biggest problem? audio.

here you have a serious machine with xlr input that can make movies, and you wanna use cheapo limited moviemaking tools? why lerrrrr

the fujinon lens of course is expensive, but most people just rent it out lah. although, if you wanna go a cheaper way, apparently you can also use fujinon tv broadcast camera lens on it. crystal clear images, much better than HD! except of course, the resolution of the camera is SD but the colours would make you go WOW. it goes around 1k-3k on ebay.

it's heavy, but shoulder-mount so it's quite comfortable than my Sony Z1 that I used to use for weddings and events back then.

kalau wedding pakai dslr ok lah, since you don't really use the mic that much. and just for the record, i've seen a lot that uses camcorder than dslr. prolly because they've used video camera for ages lah. also certain things are just plain better for time-critical events like weddings - battery life for instance. you gotta put this into account as well, if you're going solo. if ramai then dslr pon takpe.

DSLR nicer quality due to better lowlight and shallow DOF. big megapixel won't matter, but the lens are theoretically much better quality since it's designed to deliver light to the sensor to produce images that are a lot bigger than HD size. but video colours and video resolution (not pixel size) hmmm i dunno. but those things aren't really important for weddings so it wouldn't matter to you biggrin.gif

I remembered for one wedding I had to make a close up shot of the couple, but I couldn't because it was so packed around them. Everybody was sitting though, so I had to attach the 2kg cam to a tripod, tegakkan the tripod and hold it above everybody's head and pray that the tripod can tahan biggrin.gif my hand was shaking the whole time, but luckily nothing bad happened. and the camera's stabilizer was superb, not even a slight shake in the footage. try doing that with a dslr, even if it's much lighter, the lack of stabilizer will make editing the footage will give you nightmares biggrin.gif it's things like this probably that make seasoned solo wedding videographers still prefer videocams than dslrs. and there are still a lot that will never touch memory card videocams biggrin.gif

the front heavy is due to the 20x zoom, right?

well for weddings you hardly need to have that kind of power. Can try mounting Canon slr EOS EF lenses to it though with an adapter.

this is a really good brand to check out.

QUOTE(zlven @ Sep 5 2011, 03:33 PM)
Guys, can suggest one camcorder for me as a beginner.
For travelling and personal purpose, compare between Sony HDR CX130 and Panasonic HDC SD60/80 and Canon legria R26/16, which one preferable?

I think all budget are around RM1500~RM1800, right? it's any model is old version may consider outdated or any model is newer?

older = more value

get 1/2 years older model. cheaper, and higher range.
