The Val is a terrific plant for beginners. Its not demanding where light is concerned. The leaves will grow all the way to the top of your tank and then grow along the water surface. Useful to provide shade to shy fish and to give off a very natural look. They reproduce by runners like real grass. Meaning near the mother plant you'll soon see tiny vals coming up from the substrate. When they get big enough, you can separate them, or leave them where they are to create a real jungle effect.

The rotala is a bit more demanding, but still good for beginners. Plant the stems into your substrate and it will grow. When it gets too long for your liking, break it off and replant the piece you cut off! And you get an extra plant. Good for tanks with livebearers where you want to save the babies. The leaves of rotala can serve as shelter to them.
