‘Aquaman’ Villain Revealed (Exclusive)

user posted image

When Jason Momoa suits up as “Aquaman” for his standalone film, he will face off against one of the seafaring superhero’s greatest foes.

TheWrap has exclusively learned the bad guy of the movie will be Aquaman’s deadliest and most-famous opponent — Black Manta. “Aquaman” diehards should go nuts for the film’s adherence to DC lore — “Aquaman” first introduced the villain in 1967. In DC’s “New 52” reboot, Black Manta is a man in a suit with no innate super powers.

Warner Bros. had no comment.

Black Manta (pictured above) has had several distinct origin stories over the years. In the latest version, Aquaman killed his father in retaliation for a murder committed by the young Black Manta. So begins Black Manta’s quest for revenge.

The character has spent some time in Belle Reve prison, during which Amanda Waller tried to get him to join Suicide Squad. Interestingly, fans floated a now-disproven rumor last year that Common would play Black Manta in “Suicide Squad.”

Jason Momoa will next be seen as “Aquaman” in 2017’s “Justice League” along with fellow Atlanteans Mera (Amber Heard) and Vulko (Willem Dafoe). “Gangster Squad” screenwriter Will Beal is writing the screenplay based off a treament by Geoff  Johns and James Wan. Wan is directing the “Aquaman” film, which is slated for release on July 27th, 2018.

It's DC... it's hard to say. 'Suicide Squad' trailer looked good what with all the music and all, but turned out bad.

Here's hoping James Wan truly delivered another stunning DC spectacle. The other winning DC film would be 'Wonder Woman'.

Believe it or not, I have the most hope for 'Shazam'  biggrin.gif

Depending on which writer handling the storyline, Geoff John version of Arthur Curry is the powerhouse hero you don't mess with. He is a little more like Jamie Lannister. A little rough on the edges and pretty brutal. Dan Abnett version has him returning to the noble hero roots. This movie version just a little streamline to the usual reluctant hero with added surfer bro demeanor. Glad it's Jason Mamoa otherwise you'll be looking at a Chris Pine look-a-like casting. Just wish they put more effort in fleshing out the characters and storyline.

Not saying the movie has to mimic 100% of source material but at least give a more meaningful spin or recontextualized it to something more refreshing.

I think this film is more closer to animated movie jl: throne of atlantis rather than new 52 comic version of throne of atlantis..

In terms of rewatchability, I'd rate Aquaman higher.

Wonder Woman has a great story but it's a one-off thing. Once you know the story, repeat viewings are pointless. I only watched wonder woman once in the cinema
Aquaman had a serviceable story but it's set in an amazing fantasy world you'd want to revisit over and over. Going to see Aquaman for the third time this wiken  laugh.gif

Am i the only one that thought ww is overrated? It is still good film but the high rating is becoz of woman lead n feminisim lol...
