Hi Lowyat members,

Just got my new car not long ago, personally feel that the stock tyres (NCT5) for 205/55R16 is quite noisy sweat.gif . So, it comes to my mind to get it replaced with something better. Appreciate your comments/advice on this icon_question.gif .

I drive a lot in city, so I would say 90% city drive and 10% on highway. I consider myself a normal driver (not too fast but not too slow). In highway, the fastest I would go probably around 140-150km/h (dry) and 90-100km/h (wet), but in city, max I can go is around 100-110km/r (dry) and 70-80km/h (wet).. but as you know, KL famous with its worse traffic, so my average speed in KL can vary from 20km/h to 90km/h.

For me, in comparison with NCT5 doh.gif , I would prefer tyre that has good noise reduction (quiet) and comfort, good (or at least not bad) in handling/performance and normal durability (can reach 30k km).

Through my browse here, I saw lot ppl suggesting Yoko AdvanDB, PS3, 3ST, efficientgrip, and etc rclxub.gif . For my driving pattern, which tyre is better and suits me? Any idea on the price range? My budget can go from 300-450 per piece.

BTW, anyone got any comments on Nitto NT830?

Also, I would trade in the NCT5, quotations for trade in and new tyres are welcomed.

Lowest priced comfort tyre would be the Bridgestone Turanza GR-100 for your size and requirements:

Currently using Yokohama C Drive 205/60/16 on our Accord, and C Drive 2 195/60/15 on our Citra and used up a few sets of Michelin PS3 195/50/15 on my Satria.

The Accord's C drive is due for change with 30K on them. Maybe in a few weeks.

Those are decent tyre.

But if budget can be stretched, The Advan DB and PS3 are fairly safe choices.
*
What do you think about the C drive and PS3? Which is more quiet, C Drive or PS3? But definitely PS3 on the high side, but not sure if is comfort/quiet.. If is better than NCT5, is good to consider (but the saw seems need 460 per piece). How about AdvanDB? seems not much ppl selling it.

if want silent and comfort, i guess it's AdvanDB or Michelin P3ST (note: It's Primary 3 ST, NOT THE SAME AS PS3 - Pilot Sport 3)

i have just changed to CDrive2...ok for comfort and noise (but after half used, dunno lar)..but comfort wise, probably CC5 is still better, but CDrive2 supposely have better grips in wet condition. So far, driving my CDrive2, haven't encounter aquaplanning yet...last 2 days heavy rain....maybe still new gua...but i have experience quiet a number of aquaplanning on my old CC5 with about 40km usage...maybe old liao, can't remember how it performs when still new.
*
I tot Primacy 3ST is cheaper than PS3, so ideally it's less comfort than it? or is it cause different main foucs? Can it last for 30k km? cos I saw lot bad comments on the durability of Michellin, but they didn't mention how bad it is.

I see, but I saw some ppl in lowyat mention C Drive2 has poor wet grip, which looks quite contradict compare to the advertised details. and C drive2 is much cheaper than P3ST/PS3.

P3ST is top of the line comfort tyres from michelin. PS3 is performance tyres, not comfort tyres.

Just notice this too, thx! But does the 3ST works well (at least not bad in wet or dry condition)?
Their prices seems not vary much, PS3 at 400-460, and for 3ST 430-460.

I can't comment on the quietness of the C Drive Vs. PS3 vs NCT5 since the PS3 was on a different car, however, the NCT5 were ori tyres on the Accord and the Citra, where both was switched to C Drives/C Drive 2 respectively.

In terms of quietness, the C Drive /C Drive 2 were about the same as the NCT5s when new, but as the NCT5 wore down, it got progressively louder. The C Drive on the accord were down to its wear bars but they remained fairly quiet.

The biggest problem with our NCT5s, were that on both cars, they had abnormal wear, which lead to premature replacements, the Accord suffered more severely, 2 sets of Fronts in 30K, the outer edges stated scalloping leading to the tire unable to be balanced. The C drive worked fine on the same standard alignment settings.

Both have about the same amount of dry grip, but the C Drive sidewalls felt softer, and in the case of the Accord and Citra, were fine, since it made the car more comfortable...however, the C Drives may need slightly more air pressure since on both cars, they seem to wear out both the inner and outer thread, a symptom of underinflation.

The other issue is cost, The C-Drives were a lot cheaper than the NCT5s. Bought them at 200/ea for the 195/60/15 and 280 for the 205/60/16 (the replacement NCT5 205/60/16 was 330). These were a good 3-4 years ago so prices would have gone up.

Both C Drives have about 30K-40K on them which seems reasonably durable. Certainly more than the NCT5.

The PS3 is a more performance orientated tyre...it has significantly more dry and wet grip, better turn in and stability and more importantly, the breakaway characteristics are very linear. The PS3 is still a fairly comfortable tire. I wont be hesitant to recommend the PS3 if budget permits.

As a side note, perhaps unrelated or coincidental, I have never had a puncture with the PS3, even with nails in them, it still manages to hold its air. Unfortunately I can't say the same about the cheaper Nangkang RSII and Achelies ATR, which had sidewall failures in about 30 secs from detecting vibration, which means a very rapid loss of air, although I could not find any puncture damage.

So it may be a wise decision to go with a better tyre, even though it is more expensive.

Wow, quite detailed review.. thx a lot! I might need to for better tyres then.. but since u said NCT5 about on par with C-Drive2 when is new, maybe I shud get sumthing nicer...

The GR100, EY and 3ST are in my consideration, as well as advanDB... but dunnoe which suits me more, and got quote for Nitto NT830 which seems not many ppl using..

I noe P3ST couldn't last long from all the comments I get, but can it last at least 30k with no major change in quality over time?

im not a user but i think most tyre can last 30k km provided you maintain them well.
btw, bro, y dun u consider c1s since itz comfort tyre and within ur budget?
*
But heard a lot saying quiet tyres wear out fast, but dunnoe how fast is the fast.. My past driving records was only travelled 12k km each year. So if can last me for 3 years shud be quite good ady.
The price of C1S is about the same/slightly higher than efficientgrip, but not sure which are nicer.. and GR100 is cheaper than most quiet tyres.

C1S is more towards comfort-performance oriented, should have better wet traction but wears fast.. i've used efficientgrip before.. not too bad. low noise and comfortable, long lasting.. GR100 is cheapest among these three.. i think it should be more or less the same with efficientgrip.
*
Thx a lot for the input, seems can aim for efficientgrip/GR100 instead the expensive Primacy 3ST.

efficientgrip / GR100 will do fine.. i do not know how much better is the primacy 3st given the price difference.
*
I will go for the cheapest GR100 before goes for other brands. From my finding, 3ST is about 25-40 higher than efficient grip.

Wah, very good list - you have definitely done your homework!  rclxms.gif
I assume you got your GR100 from Hin Leong? Any additional charges for alignment/creditcard etc?
*
Price can also vary caused the manufactured period. Price are based on cash basis, by credit card will incur + 2 to 3% charge

I go with Ching Tyre which offer higher trade in than most dealers out there, and is much nearer to me which safe another petrol cost as well.

Hin Leong offered me the lowest price for GR100 but they only willing to give me the trade in price after observe the tyre in real(even rough quote also cant).

I ended up with Ching Tyre, its new tyre price is slightly higher than others(valve +10/pc and balancing +5/pc) which make it 305 each. The tyre was made in week 14-16 of 2014.

If u wan comfort n noise reduction, i recommend conti CC5

I also drive a vios n change from NCT to CC5.
Clearly can hear the noise level go down after changing
*
heard lot say the same, but it's only when the CC5 still new and it get deteriorating fast 10-15k travelled compared quiet tyres.. actually, before my trade in of NCT5, it still can be considered as quiet. but lot say it get worse after 5k...

Finally changed my tyre to BS GR100 at rm300/donut (include metal valve, balancing n alignment). Trade in nct5 wo5h rm160/pcs. No charges for using credit card.

Feel a bit noise reduce but not very significant,  may b need to test more round only will know.
*
Quite a good deal, where you change it? Use my above price list?
Nct5 when is new, is not that noisy, and more obvious when in highspeed. That y the diff not much when both are new
