In A Galaxy Far, Far Away. A Newbro attempts to join his corp's fleet.
Bitter vet: Ok, time for [insert op here] guys.
Newbro: Can I join?
Bitter vet: Sure, newbro. We always need more ewar/tackle/meatshield
Newbro: *#*!@*#!
Your satisfaction depends on your objective. Death is an unpleasant experience. Death hurts your reputation. PvP'ers proud with their killboard and choose stats that benefit them. Some use ISK as indicator to show their performance on big fleet fights while others based on points, to show their expertise in solo and small gang engagement. A death, especially in an expensive ship will often ruin the killboard.Bitter vet: Ok, time for [insert op here] guys.

For me, who live in null-sec, each engagement is important. Every fight news you read in either EveNews24 or The Mittani often requires careful preparation. Accident supers tackled? Don't get the heading fools you. What the news does not report is how persistence they watch the supers movement for months. Preparation is necessary as a small mistake leads to the lost of the entire 250-man fleet but the result is priceless. Your killboard is red? Well, if it is red full of logi and ewar, anyone will welcome you. In fact, someone will sponsored you a carrier once you have enough SP points.
Hate being told what to do? Perhaps you might think FC job is glorious because everybody follow his command. You will be celebrated until you make a mistake. You want to be the top damage dealer? I don't think with your 8 mil SP points will get you there.
In null-sec, support ships play the same important role as damage dealer ships. Veterans can also fly 'em but it would be inefficient to use their years of training to just fly ewar. When they lack numbers, they have to sacrifice a few of them for ewar/logistic. Ewar and logistic require less training to be useful. A successful fleet requires ewar and logistic. Damping the enemy logi breaks their tank, target painting helps damage dealer, web and scram catch the FC ships. People usually hate the role because they feel unworthy, not glorious and unpopular.
Not all death are sad experiences. A death because of good fight where your enemy left at 1% hull often brings you smile. Same goes if you know that your death help your fleet win strategic objective. For example, you die in a logi but your enemy pay with 5 tengus. Your death helps your corp obtained the solar system, aids your alliance own the constellation, and supports your coalition foothold on the entire region. You will be rewarded with a system where you get to rat and earn 20 mil per tick (or 60 mil per hour) or mine enough minerals to develop the region. This happen if you are on the winning side. If you are lost, then you need to retreat, revise your strategy and keep trying.
After all, nothing stays the same in Eve. Every change brings opportunity. With a right group, you will reach your opportunity faster.
