Speaking of burning the midnight oil I found an interesting article. Not sure how true it is though
McLaren Not Getting Complacent Over Development By Sam Cooper June 18 2007 QUOTE The team had set themselves a clear and a hard goal for the team to conquer, that goal was simple, to get ahead of Ferrari, the team wanted a 0.15 improvement every grand prix, which would be a hard thing to do, since there are many back to back races, the McLaren team would have their work cut out, the McLaren team have exceeded their goal, and are making a 0.2 second improvement, every race. Better than 0.2s per race!? At the start of the 2007 season, the McLaren team were around 0.5 to a second a lap slower than the dominant Ferrari's, this changed, as McLaren turned the disadvantage on its head, and got their first win of the 2007 season at Malaysia. In Bahrian, the Ferrari's appeared to have the edge on the softer of the tyres, leaving Felipe Massa to win the Grand Prix. The turning point in the seven races that have passed was almost certainly Ferrari's new Europe car, which debuted at the Spanish Grand Prix. Reliability problems stopped Kimi Raikonen's race winning chances in their tracks, as Felipe Massa won infront of Lewis Hamilton, things were about to change for both McLaren and Ferrari. The Monaco Grand Prix was nothing short of dominated by Fernando Alonso and McLaren, with Lewis Hamilton in close persuit, Ferrari were no where to be seen, leaving McLaren a healthy lead in both championships. Canada was set to be Ferrari's race, this was not the case, both Ferrari's struggling to beat the faster McLaren's. Felipe Massa was disqualified, and Kimi finished a dissapointed 5th, with McLaren superstar, Lewis Hamilton winning the incident packed race. Just seven days later, the same result was repeated, many people betted against McLaren, and thought Ferrari would be faster, this was not the case, Ferrari were 0.3-0.5 seconds behind the faster McLaren's and McLaren CEO Martin Witmarsh intends to keep Ferrari behind, as the McLaren team are already preparing upgrades to the ultra quick MP4-22. "This year more than ever, it's all about a broad number of very minor changes," Whitmarsh said. "We're really on a very micro-level managing airflow around the car. And we've got a great team of young engineers with the bit between their teeth, charging along. "But they're not complacent because Ferrari is a good competition and want to win this championship too and they will keep the pressure on us. "We've got high confidence in the engineering processes - we see improvements straight away on the stopwatch. We've got a reasonably good step forward in the pipeline for France and, looking at the development system, we've got some more things coming through." "Aerodynamics are still the determining factor," Whitmarsh added. "We started out at the beginning of the year with a target of 0.15 seconds per race improvement and we increased that to 0.2 seconds per race. Now we're doing better than that." |

QUOTE(linkinstreet @ Jun 26 2007, 08:12 PM) Unlike Ferrari dominance, we still have intra team racing, which IMO is still very good. Remember that in 1989, McLaren won 15 of the 16 races, but it was not boring as Senna and Prost battled between themselves all teh way Spot on mate. Unlike 2004 we don't have a clear No. 1 like Ferrari did.I haven't been bored at all and i'm waiting in anticipation to see how the Lewis-Fernando battle pans out |

Both Alonso and Hamilton used 2 sets of hard tyres instead of 2 sets of softs like Ferrari did. Why? I'm just as baffled as the rest of u. Maybe our car just can't extract that much pace from the softs

QUOTE(sleepy @ Jul 9 2007, 06:38 PM) Dude. Let's not make some anti-Hamilton remarks here ok? This is a McLaren thread after all. Which ever of the two drivers win will also benefit the team as a whole. With the Ferrari charging up the WDC, I rather see Lewis taking more points to minimize the possibility of the team losing this season's crown. If you wanna post anti-Hamilton remarks, open your own Alonso-worship thread Couldn't have said it any better |

We don't care what kind of mistake Massa makes...as long as he makes one |

QUOTE(advanced @ Jul 14 2007, 04:39 AM) lyns ferrari fans are immature?you've directly insulted to all ferrari's fans in lyn,and can you justify your sentence above? Firstly...his opinion that Ferrari fans in LYN are immature is his opinion. And tbh it's one that i and many others share. It's not an insult..unless u're that sensitive IMHO,judging your post you are not against what ferrari fans critism of mclaren but your self, you say ferraris fans(lyns) are immature, posting stupid/non-constructive post, its just an utter excuses/expresses of how you hated what the fact we posted,as you just hated on what ppl criticism on anything related to you, moreover flaming to you, glance at you post ,biased?i knew you were trying to conceal conceits of yourself, Added on July 14, 2007, 9:24 am QUOTE(karhoe @ Jul 14 2007, 09:20 AM) We are not stirring up your thread, we just don't like it when you people call us immature, just like when Massa caused Alonso to eat sand few races back, you MATURE people said the same thing too Said the same what? The most i have seen McLaren fans say about that incident was that Massa could have shunted both of them out but we accepted it was a racing incident. Did we go around bashing Ferrari like nobody's business? You guys need to stop listening to that Raikkonen cause he's obviously got all of u guys spouting insults like it was candy. This post has been edited by verx: Jul 14 2007, 09:24 AM |

QUOTE(Hean @ Jul 17 2007, 02:44 PM) I beg to differ. The most annoying is ppl like u who can't think and form their own opinions objectively. McLaren has no need to intentionally steal info from Ferrari when they are well capable of building a championship winning car by themselves. The FIA has to get this right and they are caught in a very awkward position. On one side there is Ferrari pressuring them to dock McLaren's points to eliminate the competition for the WCC/WDC and on the other they will have to give a fair judgement on McLaren seeing as it was an employee acting on his own accord to steal those documents. The funny thing is..Toyota were caught a few years ago using Ferrari info as well but they didn't suffer any major punishment from the FIA...most likely because Toyota weren't a championship challenging team. Are the FIA pro-Ferrari like so many have accused them before? We'll see with the upcoming decision.. |

QUOTE(advanced @ Jul 18 2007, 08:12 AM) For some one that doesn't know the difference between "insulting" and "assaulting" and who can't even spell 'sentence', it's very nice of u to call someone else stupid. And of course i'm ignoring the fact that u spelt stupid wrong as well. But i assume that was a typing error unlike your other ones. |

QUOTE(bearbear @ Jul 22 2007, 10:22 PM) Cos Alonso overtook him? Yea I didn't like that touch from Massa. There was more than enough space...And that blue flag was damn ridiculous.he nearly took both of them out leaving so little space for Alonso, whining about Hamilton 'blocking' him when he was 3-4 second behind Hamilton |
