Hi girls,

Recently i've been actively using a lot of skin care products, especially facial mask to keep up with my facial health care...

And i got very conscious with the ingredients that is in the products that i'm trying or to say using. So i thought that it would be good to share with you girls as well.

Next time, before you purchase skincare/cosmetics, do look out for the following ingredients, these might be harmful to our skin.

A few toxic beauty ingredients to avoid!

1) Parabens
Used in makeup, moisturizers, shampoos etc. May interfere with hormone function. Associated with breast cancer. Look out for ingredients with “pararaben” in their name (methylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben, ethylparaben). Widely used even though they are known to be toxic.

2) Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)
In products that foam such as shampoo, cleansers, bubble bath. SLES can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which may cause cancer. SLS may damage liver. Irritates skin, eyes and respiratory tract.

3) Mineral Oil
In many other care products such as baby oil, body lotions, soap and makeup. Mineral oil is a petroleum by-product which cloggs the pores and interferes with the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins, promoting acne and other disorders. Slows down skin function and cell development, resulting in premature aging.

4) Polyethylene Glycols (PEGS)
Widely used in conditioners, moisturizers, deodorants, etc. Can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which can cause cancer.

5) Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives
Look for DMDM HYDANTOIN, DIAZOLIDINYL UREA, IMIDAZOLIDINYL UREA, METHENAMINE, or QUARTERNIUM-15. Widely used in hair products, moisturizers, etc. Formaldehyde causes cancer.

6) DEA, cocamide DEA and lauramide DEA (Related chemicals: MEA and TEA)
In creamy and foaming products such as moisturizer, shampoo. Can react to form cancer-causing nitrosamines.

7) Triclosan
In “anti-bacterial” products such as toothpaste, soaps, hand sanitizers. May interfere with hormone function.

8 ) Chemical Sunscreens (with Retinyl Palmitate, Oxybenzone and Octyl Methoxycinnamate)
When many of the chemicals used in popular sunscreens are exposed to sunlight, reactions occur between the sunscreen’s active and inactive ingredients and the epidermis. Toxic reactions include inflammation, dermalogical effects, allergic reactions and photogenotoxic (DNA altering) effects. Chemical sunscreens have ingredients that actually promote cancer.

Natural sunscreens with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are safer alternatives.

P.S. Sunscreen does NOT allow the body to absorb any vitamin D from sunlight. So if you plan on being outside for a short period of time, skip the sunscreen and feed your body the vitamin D that will keep it healthy.

9) Toluene.
A petrochemical derived from petroleum or coal tar sources. You may see it on labels listed as benzene, toluol, phenylmethane, methylbenzene. It can affect your respiratory system, cause nausea and irritate your skin.

Of course, some of the ingredients seems to be unavoidable, but at least, now i know, if i can avoid as much, i will smile.gif

Dear...

I suggest a fact check before you decide that these chemical are to be avoided. Any chemical can be harmful when it's abused. Please do not be scared away with these chemical names.

I'll be honest and say I only scanned through your post. But point 2, only in certain dose, and for example, say Johnson & Johnson's baby shampoo, contains less than 0.02% of SLS, which other legal product could contain up to 50%.

This is rather lengthy:

Point 1 and 9, the chemical listed ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT. Your name of product are called nomenclature. And when nomenclature are different, it means the chemical is physically, chemically different. When it says Parabens free, it just mean there is other preservatives used, like Phenoxyethanol, Germabens II, Grapeseed Extract, etc. Used incorrectly is also harmful....

Toulene is toulene. Benzene is benzene. Chemicals listed in point 9 are all aromatic hydrocarbons, which means you can differentiate them by smelling. Also known as cyclic hydrocarbon. Cyclic hydrocarbons are carcinogenic (CAN cause cancer). Toulene is found in inks. (so use pencil if you would like to avoid them) They can all be derived from petrochemical or extracted or produced in labs from other products. It's usually derived from petrochemical because the cost of getting good quality toulene is cheaper.

Chemical names are easily confused.... cause SLS is, in other names are sodium dodecyl sulphate, sodium n-dodecyl sulphate. But as I said, they are nomenclatures. Physically and chemically different. They are very similar and only behaves differently when in reaction with certain chemicals.

Did you know SLS is not a carcinogen?

PS: I'm tired so if my post whatever is cacat, (and my chemistry is rusty), you'll have to excuse me.

I think it's great that you have started a thread like this to create awareness. There are a lot of products especially cosmetic, skincare, healthcare products that are being sourced/sold online that are not legal due to false health claims, fake halal logo, misrepresenting and misleading product, false representations of products etc.

With more contributors about certain product, I think this thread has the potential to grow into a proper learning ground about products, from proper labelling, declaration, health claims and drug content in bpfk regulated products.

We just need accurate information and participant to move this thread along.

It's better to practice due diligence then to regret later.

Hello...

Uhmm, yea it's pretty hard to find, got also very expensive sad.gif

But for me, before i purchase any products to try, i usually just do a quick check on their ingredient list...As long as they are paraben free, mineral oil free, alcohol free, acid free...it pretty much works for my skin..

As i have very sensitive skin, if products include the above mention ingredient, my face will get itchy and swollen.

Hope this helps smile.gif

This is a good thread. Anyone care to share what products they are using to avoid these dangerous chemicals? I think for facial mask, some of the ingredients can be found in our kitchen. If you don't feel lazy to do it.

Go for natural & organic stuffs lo. But remember to still look through their ingredient list cause there are some brands dare to claim they're natural & organic even though they're not.
