interstellar is stellar!

almost 3 hrs of riveting entertainment n thrill - if you like syfy, space travel, time travel, save-the-human-race, that is.

the special effects aren't exactly the best but the drama buildup is excellent. u may get emotional and tearful towards the end.

marvelous job from chris nolan, director of dark knight trilogy and inception.

star studded cast: matthew mcconaughey, anne hathaway (dark knight rises), jessica chastain (zero dark dirty), michael caine, john lithglow, matt damon...

the film will remind u of what u saw in these same genre movies:

.. 2001 a space odyssey - hal, jupiter
.. 2010 odyssey 2 - aero breaking, the ghost of david bowman
.. contact - arroway father n daughter did much; the coopers do more this time
.. gravity - the silence, peace, horror, 3-d spin in outer space
.. event horizon, sunshine - a new visual depiction of what a wormhole, blackhole and event horizon is to the human eye

best movie 2014 for me. 4.5/5. enjoy a lot more in dtshdma!

Being with kids and all, made me hardly have time to enjoy movies in the cinema. But with Interstellar, I made it a point to go to an Imax rated cinema, sat in the middle of the theatre, and enjoyed the visual and the audio part of the movies to its max.

To me, Interstellar was a little bit of a let down. More for its pace than anything else. But having a daughter myself about the same age as Murph, this movie made me cried, despite my best attempt to suppress it.

At some point of the movie the pace, and background of earth's ending environmental problem and food shortage etc started to make the movie depressing. Luckily the ending was the opposite. Concept of Relativity was applied extensive in this film, which made the core reason for the tragedy. Some part of which is so abstract that, to make it visually on the screen is almost next to impossible (Not going to give any spoiler on which scenes). Nonetheless, the good thing about this film is that the focus of the film is very human, about loss and near miss in live, and about regrets. Luckily its all been redeemed in the end. Watching the film in its full glory in an IMAX cinema is a must.

One problem though, I think the movie soundtrack is sub-par. Which is a shame considering that fact that it has all the ingredient for human epic, grandios special effect and scenery.

My rating would be 4/5.

Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)

My, has Uncle Owen (Joel Edgerton) - Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005), grown!!!

laugh.gif

Ridley Scott did no spare any expense making this movie.

The production value for this movie is through the roof.

The wardrobes, props, wigs etc are all as authentic as I imagine, being a fan of anything ancient Egypt (I watch all documentaries and book I can get my hands on, on that subject matter)

After watching this, I am puzzled as to why it was ban in Malaysia!!!

Anybody here know what the reason this movie it was banned?

Casting, is interesting.

From stars who are known around the world (Ben Kingsley, Christian Bale ect) to actors who is only known in their respective country (Joel Edgerton, Australia).

Here lays one of the issue. For this to work, the two main characters Moses (Christian Bale) and Ramses (Joel Edgerton) has to have a love/hate relationship. This is where the movie fail to deliver.

Also updating an iconic movie like The Ten Commandments (1956) (which was also a remake) you cannot help but compare, and anything you do differently will be much scrutinize.

I understand that Ridley wanted to make this movie more inline with more up to date research, just does not hit the spot...

The interaction between all the characters could have been much better.

I have to say to me the biggest issue is Ramses (Joel Edgerton). I am not suggesting that Joel Edgerton is a bad actor. I am afraid his character is written poorly. Not at all like the Ramses in the Egyptian writing....

On a plus side, the sound is AMAZING!!!!

To borrow a term from you young'uns, what hit me in the feels most is the "In Memory Of to Tony Scott" at the end...

Done!!

Why is it banned ?

I don't know, but for Islam, any depiction of any of the prophets in images are not encouraged to say the least. Furthermore, the whole movie appear to avoid direct God intervention in most of the so called Miracles, eg. he saw the Child when he was deep in mud ? In the Bible, that flaming bush appeared to have sounded the conversation. Not a child per se. Second, there was no apparent Parting of Red Sea that everyone can relate eg. the one from the original the Ten Commandment. The movie sort of using natural phenomenon to explain most of the Biblical Miracles if you noticed. Third, if I am not mistaken, that Ten Commandment was actually made by Moses in the dark, for, well, crowd Management purposes ?

I could be wrong but I guess the above depiction may invite our authority's ban.

The Counterfeiters (2007)

A German movie about a notorious forger during the 2nd world war era, happened to be a Jew and was sent to the Concentration Camp during the war.

He was designated to help producing fake currency notes for the Nazis, aimed to destabilise the enemy countries' economy. It was based on a real story, and its a rather captivating film to watch. As it turned out, this was the largest counterfeiting Operative in the history of mankind.

I like the grain of the movies, the pace is fast, and the somehow, the SS army personnel aura, brutality and their demeanor is very convincing. Jews being jew, the centre figure was also a great counterfeiter, who even managed to pass his fake note through the Bank of England !

A great Drama for me for sure. I would give it a 8/10.

Not quite just the usual time travel.

If you are into sound, this movie has the music for it. If you are into beauty, the leading actress has it, both in photo and in realife. Its a movie that you will remember.

I did a small entry about this movie right HERE.

Was actually free to do a movie marathon this weekend.

George Lucas, in 2008, actually said he would make Indiana Jones 5, if he figures out the McGuffin ([A term famously coined by Hitchcock] a device or plot element. In the first, it was the Ark of the Covenant, second the Sankara Stones, the third Holy Grail and the fourth *groan*, crystal skulls...).

So, I actually watched these movies in the reverse order, namely, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,  The last Crusade etc, etc.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

s
I watched the very first Raiders during my secondary school time with a good friend of mine, way back many years ago. Since then I tend to believe that Raider's was and is easily the best thing that could happen to a cinema. This nonstop action type of movie making, was believably its first which appear in a Hollywood made blockbuster, by passing the usual slow-mo introductory segment which always appeared in many adventures and disaster movies of late 70's and early 80's. So till this day, I have watched Raider's ( much lesser for its 2nd and third Indiana Jones series) at least easily 10 times through the years.

After my exposure to Medieval History, Christianity, the romance of the Holy Grail (from various researcher and their writings), the romance of the Medieval Secret Society (eg. the Illuminati etc), Raider's of the lost ark suddenly became very appealing, from the way it was depicted, fought over (by the Nazi's, which was apparently real after watching some of the National Geographics Documentaries), and not to mention Steven Spielberg's idiosyncratic movie making talents.

Again the music by John Williams played a major role too to keep the movies memorable.

If you really like the romance of the Holy Grail, the Ark of Covenant and its related historical facts or legends, some recent TV series does have some part of this. The most recent one was the Curse Of Oak Island from the Discovery Channel.

ps: I watch the Crystal Skull in the Cinema, and perhaps, thats all I ever watch on that. I still have the other three movies in my collection as I speak.

My first Star Wars (the very first Star Wars in Mid 70's), I had to line up long queue, in a cinema without Aircon. The line has to be managed by Policeman to prevent jump queue. It was full. So me and my brother had to sit apart to watch the movie.

AT that time the movie usually has Intermission Session for a few minutes to allow patrons to go to the toilet or buy food. It was wooden bench, yes. For some reason we didn't feel warm at all.

ZONE PRO SITE: THE MOVEABLE FEAST (总铺师:移动大厨)

When I first watched this movie on Astro, I was 'forced' to continue till it ended against my will. Thats because while I had never heard of this movie, the manner in which this film was made, reminded me of old 'food movie' eg. Tampopo many years ago.

It has the story line, the food, the cinematic techniques that was adopted to exacerate scenes, but most important of all, a bunch of eccentric characters that made this movie. The jokes are slapsticks but acceptable for movie like this. Try it, you may get attracted to it 'against you will' like I did. I now ended up watched it almost three times ! Its that unique.

ps: 'Zone Pro Site' = Hokkien pronounciation of its Mandarin title 总铺师. Took me ages to find this out.

Reference:

Tampopo
This film is also a must watch for movie buff. In this old Japanese film, food was incorporated in all aspect of life. Now you all can watch it online via youtube. Just search for it.

Hail Caesar !

By the Coen Brothers.

Just like some of his older products, it has a unusual ending. I would call this a comedy, but mainly the film described a film producer's period of events that happened to his company.

Despite its quirkiness, which is really part and parcel of the Coen's, I really do enjoy some part of the film, though I would think that some more conventional commercial produce of the Coens has better closure.

Conclusion: a must watch for the Coen buff and enjoy every moment of it.

ps: I really love the sailor dancing sequence. We don't get to see this nowadays.

The Revenant

This movie does not sound sexy, not inspiring initially just by looking at the poster, and the whole image seems to suggest that the movie was meant for serious weekday watch, paid to watch, that is. Not as a weekend leisure enjoyment.

Well after watching it I tend to agree only on one thing. This is not a weekend Leisure enjoyment, but for serious movie buff, this is a must watch. Especially true if we somehow seems to get saturated by over the top CGI, mindless actions, Hollywood mass productions overdose.

The whole film was shot as if entirely with one wide angle lens. Which I love, especially on the wild and ruthless terrain of the American Winter West. Wide angle also gave us the perspective of being an observant within the story itself.

Oh CGI is definitely there for sure. They are there just to make the events very very realistic. The bear scene, how many of you all who have watched it fearing the bear will actually bite his groin ? I do ! Dont' laugh ya.

The story is convincing, and it showed the raw and punishing events happening in a very tough natural environment. I like the movie very much.

I was pleasantly surprised that the haunting soundtracks was actually penned by Ryuichi Sakamoto ! It surely did not sound like his !

magnificent seven 2016 is good.

thought not much originality, it offers some great entertainment as an action thriller. 3.5/5.

a remake of magnificent seven 1960 which is based on kurosawa's seven samurai 1954.

so you get denzel washington, chris pratt, ethan hawke, vincent d'onofrio playing the roles of yul brynner, steve mcqueen, charles bronson, james coburn.

still, somehow i think neither hollywood movie beats the original classic 7 samurai in black and white! biggrin.gif

Storyline reminded me of High Plain Drifter. Very similar. Was original Magnificient Seven and the Seven Samurai based on the same storyline as well ?

- The Arrival -

Based on a book by Ted Chiang (American born) : Story of your life (1998). No I haven't read the book, only found this out after the movie.

I thought the film is a cheap B flick. So I watch it in two sessions, with very little expectations.

But it blew me away. I was fascinated entirely by the story, the imagination and the complexity of the storyline. With the last part really made you think about humanity.

With that sort of intense impact magnitude, I knew I have to find out who on earth (no pun intended) is capable of story like this ! Hence I found out the writer above.

The writer wrote less than 15 short stories. 7 of which won him awards ! He refused one, because he claimed that the story was rushed by editorial pressure, not exactly what he intended it to be.

My advice for viewer is : be patient with this movie. At times its a little slow, and the narration sounded as if the movie maker tried to make the film sophisticated or artsy. They are not.

I enclosed the international trailer which does not do the film justice.

A must watch for sci fi reader, a thinker, any science students.

First of all I would like to thank everyone who has posted movies for the purpose of sharing what's available. I have certainly benefitted from all the posting, which I do come in from time to time, just to check whats available.

Sometimes I posted movies I watched, truly, just to share some great movies which hopefully would be beneficial to everyone. And in most cases if not all, they were in 1080 format.

I don't think we have strict forum format for this channel that we should stick to, as long as we do share about movies available for viewing. For those that share the audio format, it is a definite big plus.

Lets make it this way. Format to be guided by our own conscious and common sense. Afterall we are all above 18 (I think). In other country, 18 year old could well be heading a massive anti-government rally. I am sure we can handle small issue like forum posting right ?

And lets cherish the freedom too. Too many rules made us a dull boys(girls).

Btw: to play 1080, basic i3 chipset from the last two generation should be sufficient even with embedded basic intel graphic chip. I am using one i3 as my HTPC, no lag whatsoever.

VANISHING TIME: A BOY WHO RETURNED (2016)

Another Korean film which, reminded me a lot of 'Your Name', Japanese Animation. The storyline is very unique, for me anyway. And I truly enjoyed every aspect of the whole film, be it the acting of everyone young and old, Musics, cinematography, and most of all, surprisingly, the special effect.

If you love good story, you will love this.

Blade runner 2049 is a loyal sequel to blade runner 1982.

Blade runner 1982 was a ridley scott masterpiece of its time.

Agreed.

I recommend watching the 1982 version before watching the new one. That way you can recognise the old character.

Hi. Nope for the moment. I don't want neighbor complain. It is enough for me with my current setup. smile.gif I already using TV speaker for at least 10 years after my previous 5.1 all in one system broken. I no longer that demand on sound. Even now I use reduce high dynamic sound in my Apple TV 4K most the time because I watch movie normally at night.

Invent a proper at least 5.1 system - nope. smile.gif sound upgrade I may do is invest a 2.1 Dolby Atmos soundbar but not in my priority also.

Unlike you, I am more into sound than images. I have survived on 21' TV (CRT at that time) and simple 5 speaker set up for surround. I really recommend simple 5 speakers set up even with normal DTS/DD without lossless sound. No subwoofer ever for me because of noise pollution to my neighbour and my family. But enjoying soft sound form multiple source is still really enjoyable.

I recommend a used simple DTS/DD set up and speaker, no sub and play it soft.

I do not recommend it to anyone.
