Hi, it's ac98 here. I registered months ago by only decided to post now. Some of my friends said you people are a very helpful bunch, especially on the IT side. I am also an IT person, but love to take photographs as well.

I started shooting 6 years ago with film and only went digital about 2 years back. The major difference was WORKFLOW. Firstly, the digital workflow changed the way not only consumers take and handle their photos but also the way professionals capture their images and submit their work. The second, but the most wonderful thing in digital photography was RETOUCHING, nothing disappoints anyone most than having captured an importrant moment just to find out that the photo was slightly blurred or was too dark. Everyone loves the digital camera now.

Here are some of my work ...

Taken during 2006 Japan GT - From Top : Selina, Devon and Clarace

Thanks for the question.

There was no isolation done, if you're there at the 2006 Japan GT MOTUL booth, you will notice that the interior wall was made up of all white canvas. Due to the bright sunny day outside, the inside of the booth was thrown all white, like a studio backdrop. All I did was bounce the flash to the left to kill the shadows due to the canvas folding and moving due to the wind outside.

Yeah, this one's slightly more, I got some that has been chopped even MORE, LOL!! Depending on what you're trying to emphasize, sometime parts of the body can be compromised in photo cropping.

For those of you who got time, there's a pagent going on at Wisma Goldhill at Jalan Ipoh today (Saturday 26/8) at 8pm (it's the Goldhill at Jalan Ipoh, not KL, many of my friends went wandering there!).

If you dunno where is it, it's about 300m down from Mutiara Complex going towards Kepong direction if you're coming from KL/Chow Kit. If you're coming from Kepong/Selayang side, Wisma Goldhill will be on your right and you'll have to make a U-turn further down opposite the dim sum area.

This rule should be enforced that models in public events have the rights to look at their shots from digicams, I bet we will have less peep shots and videos. I hope they'll have JAIL TERMS for peep shooting, like they're about to do in Japan.

Some pics of my dearest 'grand daugther' Elvie Yau. Her last achievement was being 2nd Runner Up of the 2006 Miss Malaysia Oriental Pearl Chinese Selangor Selection smile.gif

Here, she's posing along with my 'daugther' Felixia Yeap. She recently bagged 1st Runner Up of 2006 Miss Tourism International.

I call this, the 'Breaking The Rules' series, taken entirely on the staircase of a danceclub.

I think its Canon. Nikon one approx RM350-RM400 for either brand new or used + filter.

QUOTE(earthkid @ Sep 7 2006, 12:59 PM)
for canon's...i think it's only RM280 on FTZ..and as for nikon, got a couple that is about RM350...unless you're getting f1.4, then that will be more than Rm1k
*
50mm f1.4 in FTZ for RM400. But manual lar...

For the 50mm I am talking about Canon's, the EF50mm F1.8 II. No Ultrasonic, plastic lens.

Some shots from 2005 Xtah Hairstyling Competition ... that time just started using a Canon EOS300D, consider pretty new into digital photography.

Dear Sir ac98,

Since your Portrait / Food photo damn nice, may I ask some question?

01. Shot model in the event, we need to use Flash (built-in)?
02. Shot on food need use Flash (Built-in)?

I am learning... Thanks...

Hey no sir sir here okay? tongue.gif

I never use the built-in flash during events, I rather use a lens with a wider opening to compensate for low lighting exposure reading i.e 50mm F1.8 for my shots. It's sharper and easier to compose compared to zoom lenses.

Food shots also no flash ... please ... direct flash will kill my shots! wacko.gif

That's why I said "How come she never show her teeth". It's very common, even if she dun wanna show anyone, all you need to do is get her to laugh or giggle ... "Kekekeke".

When she giggles, she really melt hearts.

Let me calculate for you ... you said you know money right? For example :

Beginner cam : RM500+
Prosumer cam : (Est) RM2000+
Accessories i.e spare batts and bag and tripod : (Est) RM200

The Canon 350D is now available body + lens for RM2700, what have you got to loose? Once you see pics from a SLR, you won't wanna PANDANG pics from any other type of cameras liao ... rolleyes.gif

Hey seriously it's not a bad idea. Get the body + lens 1st like everyone else. For the same price bargain for a small bag, and you're done! Next round get a spare lens. Take your time for the external flash if you have a built-in flash, no hurry.

Yeah aaron I understand how you feel ... hey friend, when I go out for events long time ago I see 90% of people using big big DSLRs and shooting without care I so HEARTACHE you know!

I was using manual film lens that time, have to load and unload film, have to wind the film, so MALU! Everything manual, from shutter speed to aperture setting all MANUAL setting and so slow ... I somemore cry! That time I was shooting for a hobby but I still meet and get to know girls becoz I shoot them one day and then promise to print them photos the next few days. Most of them were okay with it, as long as you keep your promise.

I never owned a compact digicam before, I waited and waited and suffered until I manage to have my own DSLR. It's a long waiting period but it was worth it all.

If someone can appreciate a good old SLR today, then he is a very good photographer! notworthy.gif

A lot of people think that we spent thousands in camera body and lenses to impress or get to know girls ... they are SO WRONG, only narrow minded individuals and kampung people think like that! For me, I spent thousands of ringgit on MYSELF actually ... if girls like my photo then they can come to me and ask me for a copy, or else I won't bother. I make friends with models and beauty queens are becoz they like my photos and they like my work, that is ALL. Nothing more, nothing less.

Sounds sad? Yes it is sad.gif

Nonetheless, the companionship and friendship of whoever that appreciates me and appreciates photography is what I cherish most. I choose to excel in photography and I CHOOSE to improve myself thru it cool.gif

I have to agree with this statement. I just printed two photos one each on A4 size photo paper, one from the S2is and the other Eos350D, and the difference is big. the dslr gives better noise/grain control, sharper image, and just generally very happy with the result. rclxms.gif

u give heart to ppl, ppl will treat u back as what u treat them.

ur're already very good...
for me, any pic take i took i oso like it coz what i like is the subject inside the pic but not how good quality of the cam can produce. of coz the pic is blur than not nice la..

hehe..although i oso admit that DSLR is really good..so in my case, i think prosumer suit me better...

70-200 f2.8 VR can buy D80 kit lens with a 50mm f1.8 d. Probably still have balance for 1GB SD/CF card.

Buy something you 'anti' but equally popular rather than something you 'really syok' but out of your budget, the uneasy feeling of able to own neither is equally unbearable you know ... brows.gif

It's okay, I will get the models to fetch you, ooops, I mean ... we can make some transport arrangement if it's okay with you, where do you stay? tongue.gif

Well, if you're asking for opinions from prosumer cam users, dun waste your time, coz nobody wanna be a prosumer camera forever.
Look at it this way, DSLRs are way cheaper in terms of :

1. Upgradability : Upgrade only the camera body, no need to change the rest.

2. Back-compatibility : Lenses and acessories can be used in older OR latest models.

3. Obsolete-proof : Major brands dun change 2-3 models every year.

4. The most important factor ... DSLRs actually have SECOND HAND VALUE. Dun believe me? Try selling off your prosumer cam when you upgrade.

You want lecture sure can, but photo session have to take a longer time, like WHO to shoot, HOW MUCH we need to pay her, and WHEN (most of us have everything but time).

Some shots from my last trip to PD trip with 2 models and a friend.

user posted image

Clockwise from Top Left :
1. The full length window overlooking a man-made stream.
2. The outside dining space, the living room looking outside (where my car was).
3. Night shot of the Cafeteria overlooking the swimming pool.
4. Late evening shot of the bridge heading towards the pool area and Cafeteria.
5. The entrance to our room.

Good thing about this place is, you get to park your car just outside your room/villa so for those who have naughty running kids and old folks, it's very convenient.

user posted image

Clockwise from Top Left (Took all this the next day morning, from the exposure you can see it's very early, actually have to shake the girls up for breakfast!) :
1. The side of our room (the light lits up to a very nice yellow glow at night illuminating my car)
2. Another side shot of the balcony overlooking the man-made stream.
3. From the seaside shooting back at the entrance to the resort.
4. Part of the swimming pool, the pooside bar.
5. The cleaner working on the pool at 8am+, very hardworking guy.
6. A view from the cafe, taken by one of the girls during breakfast.

All shots taken using the EOS Kit Lens EF18-55mm F3.5.

This is my lovely Jill Moo. Got to know her during 2006 Miss Malaysia Oriental Pearl where the event was her 1st ever pageant. Just like any other girl, a hardworking college student who only wanted to give modelling a try.

Just add a text layer and type it in. I'm not sure what fonts he's using though.

Yeah, it was shot in such a way it will show 3 things :
1. The direction Sabrina is pointing will show the brand 'Canon' on the strap
2. A huge hole created by the hood
3. A cute and curious Kei Kei overlooking Sab's shoulder

A photo that spoke for itself ...

I was thinking more of including a 300mm F4L IS / 400mm F5.6L next round. The 70-200 F4L is enough for me cool.gif

When I shoot? Wey tailou ... I am taking a short break now from shooting and you asking me when I shooting again?

Nevermind ... answer you first :
1. Mode - I am always Pee Mode ('P' Mode) no matter WHAT they say (Some say Manual Mode more 'professional', I really dun get it!)
2. Exposure Mode - Exposure? What exposure? Outdoor is expose to the sun-lah! laugh.gif

exposure mode = the mode lor... (read from book de)
P-mode, then the combination need to set or not?
Coz from what i know, P-mode fixed the exposure, u change the Aperture, then it will change the Shutter. Need change to right exposure in the Menu before use the P-mode?

Equipments ler? like Flash la, Filter la, Tripod la, What type of lens la...

You're welcome.

Throw the book aside, this is actual shoot experience, read the manual only when you pangsai (I call it "Pangsai Literature").

1. The Pee Mode automatically sets the aperture and shutter speed for you, no need to worry anything else, just concentrate on your composition and focusing points.

2. For outdoor model photography, keep your ISO to 100 if it is sunny (between 11am - 3pm), after that when the shadow is casting sideways set it back to ISO400 or else you contrast will go haywire if you're not careful.

3. Lens and Equipment? Bring an external flash just in case, a portrait lens i.e 50mm F1.8 and a telephoto zoom should you wanna isolate your subject against the background.

Happy Shooting! icon_rolleyes.gif

Shots from 2006 KLIMS - Note that the pics are non-edited and non-cropped so you guys can check out the composition and actual colour control. For KLIMS I used a Canon EOS D60 with a EF50mm F1.8 attached. All no flash.

1st up ... my dearie, Chloe. Known her since 2004 when she first started being a model and event girl where I took her studio shots for her profile. Years later and she's so grown up and attractive, gracing exhibitions and motorsports events. Halway thru the KLIMS duration she did up her hair, from straight to wavy ... so nice! wub.gif

Codee Wong ... I got to know her during the last KLIMS (most of you know how long was that ago) when I was about to leave. She was working for Range Rover that time and such an innocent lil' student girl. Years later she's a sexy part time model with career milestones of MTV shoots, pagents, fashion and hair shows and event jobs. Very friendly and nice gal.

Who stays in Bangsar area? Haaa ... can ajak her go yumcha tongue.gif

Mmm ... dunno if you guys interested.
There will be a Fashion Show going on at Teluk Intan on the 1st October 2006 (Sunday).
Venue I will confirm later (I was told it's in a Dewan or some sort, people from TI can verify?).
The show starts 630pm and ends 730pm.

I dunno how is my arrangement yet but depending on how 'mobile' some of you guys are, I wanna arrange a meet-up there. Can?

Taken from 2005 Dreamcars Asia. From left : Codee and Rose

user posted image user posted image

Rose actually complained that she's been standing next to the car the whole day, with so little people shooting her. Guys dun recognize her from the bundled hair I guess, so I asked "If you dun wanna stand NEXT to the car, why not lie ON TOP of it?" We waited until there was no one around the car (coz she's wearing skirt and had to expose herself when she prop herself on the hood) the I took the shot.

More shots coming soon ... pagent photos ...
You guys should goto more pagents, especially those with new DSLRs and new to photography. Pagent photography will teach you how to :

1. Standby and be early at a venue for camera setup and get to know other shooters
2. Cope with unexpected lightings and shooting environments
3. Choose your own position and collaborate other shooters
4. Learn to move fast, both with your camera and within position
5. Khau Lui and get to know beauty queens (Important!)

Some shots from 2006 Miss Goldhill Pagent at Goldhill Club, Jalan Ipoh.

Camera : Canon EOS350D with 50mm F1.8. No flash.

Dun mind the poor quality of the JPGs, was using Photoshop to create the thumbnails and screwed up the compression setup sad.gif

Yeah, I shot all handheld at 1/30 coz the lighting was mixed and really bad. Shooting in Auto mode would render all shots underexposed at certain parts of the body of the contestants and Program mode also same, so I had to make do with Tv Mode running all the way 1/30 without a tripod. And JPEG compression contributed to some images being blurry as well.

Yeah, it's a waste from here, but the uncompressed version is 10x brigther and definitely sharper, like those I gave to the organizer. Like I said, the thumbnails are a lil' screwed up becoz my version of Photoshop is 5.0, I can't control how it manages JPEGs.

Eunice at the DENSO booth ... I practically camped there the whole day. It was very quiet.

A Japanese photographer taking a shot of Endalince. He actually WAITED for me to finish the conversation with her,
then he gestured Lince to go outside of the booth and stand next to the promo stand and bunting to take the shot.

70-200 F2.8L IS with converter for what ... 300mm is enough, no need for converter. The 300mm F4L IS is also LIGHTER mind you. You want bokeh? I can use my 50mm F1.8 anytime tongue.gif

Why the trouble bring so many lense? Just one high quality 70-200 f/2.8 IS and a teleconverter can go battlefield already. Plus, good for low light chick hunting usage too brows.gif

EF 70-200mm f2.8L USM = RM5090
EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM = RM6290

original canon teleconverter should be around what nikon is charging = RM1.2k for 2x. But no fear my friend, Kenko teleconverters should be around RM400-RM500 laugh.gif

Two girls are usually enough. I only get one room/villa during my vacations, so 2 girls is as many as the resort would allow. Boutique resorts like Eastern Pavilion allow not more than 3 pax in the villas.

Took this in Cherating. My model, Lysun, like this a lot. It's a sunset shot of her ... I had to go INTO the ocean and shoot back at her looking at the sunset. The water was already up to my chest that time, strap also went underwater already ...

What do you think?

Actually ... if you all wanna take a shot from high angle down onto the sea you dun need a chopper's height, it's not logical and the outcome might not be that nice as well. First, you will need to invest in a wide angle lens, not necessary a fisheye, a wide angle will do.

Most of the girls are replaced the next season, about 95% of them safe to say. Only celebrity RQs are retained for some team, and many of them change team. Some even change championship.

Took me about 3 hours to reach Pangkor Island because I overshot the Bidor turn-in. The last time I went there was many many years ago, during my school time. The Lumut port changed a lot ... new ticketing building, some food stalls and many commercial shops selling parios, films, food and drinks.

This time round I was there with two part time models Loo Hui and Joyce. Loo Hui is 2005 Miss Malaysia Oriental Pearl representing Kuantan and Joyce is 2005 Miss Malaysia Tourism Selangor Selection 2nd Runner-up.

The weather was hot but I had to park about 200m away from the tickeing building becoz it was the only decent open carpark space with security and 24 hour attendance. They charge RM10 per night if you're planning to goto Pangkor Island.

The return ferry trip to Pangkor Island Beach Resort cost me RM48 for the 3 of us but we were fetched all the way into the resort instead of the town centre. It was a very enjoyable trip overall.

Once we arrived, we took turns to shower and after that I book a tour around the island which cost me RM50, the taxi driver was a very friendly Chinese man.

Teluk Nipah or Nipah Bay ...

My 2 lovely friends that came along, Loo Hui (Top) and Joyce, taken at Nipah Bay. It was a very sunny afternoon there after we checked in at the port and arrived at the hotel. Our island tour started in the afternoon but it was still warm.

The dock, where the boat arrive with the daily catch. I didn't go very near to the boat coz there're holes everywhere. Later silap silap will fall into the water! Even the girls' heels also cucuk into the wood at times. The factory worker already told us to go up to the drying area and the dock at our own risk.

Late in the afternoon we stopped by a Chinese Temple, the largest one in Pangkor Island, for a drink. The coconut cost me RM2 for one and had 7 of 'em! The lady actually took the coconuts out from the huge fridge ... the water was very soothing, cold and sweet!!

Doesn't matter if I am freelance or fulltime. If my existing clients can pay me enough why not? Ask your sister, it's not easy being fulltime if you have commitments. Most freelance models I know only uses the money for shopping or food or movies. Imagine if they have to take care of the family or pay school fees or installment for a car, toll and fuel, most girls will think TWICE to model for a living laugh.gif

Later in the day, we went shopping (I also saukoong, simpan camera), went back to our room and have a shower to prepare for dinner. Instead of having dinner at the hotel (which charged us RM75+ per pax for a BBQ buffet!) we had a good seafood makan outside by the roadside Malay restaurant which cost me not more than RM60 :

1. Ikan Pari Bakar (huge bugger, enough for 4 person!)
2. Kepah with chilli and sambal
3. 3 Ikan Keli with different tastes : Bakar, Asam and Masak 3 Rasa
4. Sup Cendawan
5. Sotong Bakar (bloody huge sotong coz it came from the sea, cannot choose!)
5. A jug of Teh Ais Limau (Dun wanna order by cup, kiasu!)3

The thing with Pangkor is, they dun take locals for dummies, they charge almost all seafood by 'seekor' rather than 'per kati/kg' becoz everyone knows the cost of food there. Only in 'tourist restaurants' they charge per kilo. The Chinese taxi driver himself asked me to avoid Chinese or Foreign restaurants at tourist spots or backpakers' area. Anyhow, he have to drive me and the girls around, we can't walk all over the island.

I left the camera in the room. Tailooooo it's makan time lah ... doh.gif

You must know something about me, I already left the stage where my camera CLINGS to me like my errr ... nevermind, clings to me all the time. I am no longer a 'photo enthusiates' or 'hobbyist'. Shoot time mean shoot, makan means makan, tidur means tidur, I dun mix them all up. If you need to shoot all the time if you need to practice I understand.

Yeah, the haze these days made lotsa KL folks to plan to go outstation also. One of my neighbours also 'terpaksa' balik his kampung in Kota Bahru. As for me, let me see ... if my bloody company comes up with my September pay before Raya, I might goto Penang again.

Ayak! Blow cover again doh.gif tongue.gif

Wanna upgrade lor  icon_rolleyes.gif

If you ask me, the BEST compact digital camera that Sony came up with so far is the W-series. It's big and bulky but the image quality is far better than the super-on-my-god-so-slim T-series.

If you wanna upgrade but budget-strapped, got for the Canon EOS350D, retailing with the Kit lens for RM2600. Ask Foto Shangri-la Sg Wang, or Boeing or Bintang Maju at The Curve, more or less same price.

The seaside is very wide, ran for about 1.2KM along the resort and it's very private. The resort is located at the northern tip of Pangkor and has it's own jetty, where our ferry stopped.
