ok i googled the eyeshadow, those kind of grey colour memang very difficult to pull off without looking like you have blue black. i usually put those kind of "naked" colours (black, grey, brown) on top of my eyeliner to further extend the shadows, so that the eyeliner legitly looks nicer and extended. after all a super thick eyeliner is too glaring sometimes. another style for everyday look is a reasonably thick eyeliner (i like to use pencil coz it looks less glaring when drawn super thick) with a good coloured base eyeshadow like what your friends praised you with, but you can change to either white, gold, peach, shimmery silver also. dont use green, blue, other non-naked colours unless you have a special function.
if youre bored, dabble with other eyeliner colour in replace of black, such as brown, dark blue, dark purple. it's a cool style to vary your look
Style 1 that I use with eyeliner + dark shadows extension:

there are still many more ways to enjoy monolidded style but you'll eventually experiment and discover them yourself. note that some colours will particularly suit you more than others. i think i look good in pink, purple, or white eyeshadow, totally want a Naked 3 palette (i like playing with eyeshadows)
