Cranes have fallen before. Most recently at the Rumah WIP project at Jalan Gombak (Next to the mosque) but that happened within the construction area and was a tower crane which can potentially damage the structure depending on how and where it falls but obviously not a danger to the public as it fell within. Evidently they have overlooked the safety aspect of how this crawler cranes and other machinery get affected by the weather.
I think for now let's not speculate and wait for them to conduct a detailed investigation and apply the learnings accordingly. A fallen piece of equipment is by no means a method in which to judge the quality of a building itself. This is not the same situation as the Kepong project which was evidently a quality issue.
Even during the construction of KLCC last time there was crane that accidentally fell within the construction site and badly injured several workers during the early stage. Knew this through a family member that was involved as a supplier in the project (Other forum people who have heard and remember this please do chime in). Obviously information did not spread then as the internet was fairly new and the gov ensured the press didn't talk about it as well. You may also choose to believe or not believe but the point is it's no way a barometer of building quality but definitely a telltale sign of an unsafe site which is also not good. I agree they have to improve the construction site safety a lot. Let's see.
