Hi LYNers.

A few days ago my father called my home landline number, and while the call was still waiting to be picked up (the dial tone was normal), my telephone did not ring at all.

Initially, I thought this might be a problem with the telephone itself, so we disconnected the phone, carried it to my father's office, connected to the telephone line in the office and called the office number - the telephone rang like usual. After concluding the problem does not lie within the telephone itself, we went back to my home and tried a direct connection bypassing the splitter, connecting the little box with red LED light directly to the telephone set. We tried calling the home number, and the phone did not ring at all. However, the call connected when I picked up the phone holder and we could speak through the phone like normal. This means it is not a problem with my splitter / anything between the little box with red LED light and my telephone.

However, this leaves me at a loss. If it's not a problem with my telephone, and it's not a problem with my connections / wirings / splitter, what could possibly be causing my phone to fail to ring?

Please help, and thanks.

Borrow a phone from your neighbour. Easier to test. Your father's office is probably too far away to be easily accessible.

It is weird that the ringer worked in your father's office but not at home. And though it didn't ring, the call connected when you picked up the handset.

I would carry out the test a few more times to make sure that it is repeatable every time, to make sure no mistake was done during the test.

Sorry, I wasn't aware if there is another forum section this thread would fit better in.

Done that. I mentioned I tried a direct connection to the telephone, and yet the problem persists. Not a problem with my splitter.

Borrowed a normal working telephone from my neighbour, and the telephone failed to ring after is was plugged into my line. In contrast, my telephone rang as normal when plugged into my neighbour's line.
Test has been repeated many times, and the results are reproducible.

I tried calling 100, but there''s something weird going on. You know that when you dial 100, your call will be picked up by an answering machine first, where you press all the buttons you need (e.g. 1 for Bahasa Malaysia... 1 untuk Telefoni dan Streamyx... "Sila masukkan kod kawasan dan nombor telefon anda, diikuti dengan butang 'Hash'...")? As soon as I started keying in my phone number, there will be a second voice overlapping the TM's answering machine's voice. The second voice says "Nombor yang anda dail tiada dalam perkhidmatan, The number you dialled is not in service, Nombor yang anda dail tiada dalam perkhidmatan, The number you dialled is not in service... and then it starts beeping as loud as possible. I can't even hear anything from TM's answering machine / operator!

Obviously there is something wrong with your line. So you cannot report using your phone. Make the call using your neighbour's phone.

Report using another line. They will send tech to see.
