If you're looking for DSLR, then ANY DSLR with good lighting set up regardless of any brand is more than capable of doing what you require it to do.

I'd like to but don't know how well are you with cameras and getting the right pictures. It's not only investment on getting a camera, but it's education on getting nice picture. If you are not familiar with camera, then just get some point and shoot cameras, but the pictures will be doubtful. Sorry for pouring cold water, but that's the truth about shooting the right picture.

Lighting kits should be on your mind first. Depending on the size of your products. A nice set up gets you a nice photo.

Take a look at these kits for an idea of what you might be getting:

When you say "models", do you mean people or "scale models"? If taking picture of inanimate objects, buy a tripod. smile.gif

Constant lighting is easier than strobes, but shutter speeds could be much slower.

If using strobes, umbrellas tend to be cheaper and softer than lightboxes.

Many cameras (including SLR) use a preflash when in TTL mode. This triggers the strobes in slave mode. All this means is that you probably have to buy triggers.

If using point-and-shoot cameras, they will work so long as you can set both the aperture and shutter speed. If buying a new camera just for this, basic SLRs at around RM1-1.5k should be sufficient. As others have already said, don't put all of your budget into the camera alone.

Hi thread starter,

Let me help you out here, I shoot food on a commercial basis, (It is the same as shooting a product but some clients want props and stuff in the background so that is another way of shooting which will not be discussed)

Since you say e commerce, I take all your photos are going to be used in your site only.

For the cheapest configuration, What you will need is
A.1xDSLR camera(Any brand but I use a Canon), buy the cheapest second hand also ok, new one basic level cost +/- 1300.

B.2x Flash/Strobes/Flash Gun (What ever you call it) (You can buy the YongNuo 560 III(Third Party bRAND) (Buy the Canon mount, if you use a canon, a Nikon Mount if you use a nikon, Because the electrical contact point, It is brand specific not model specific), It cost about Rm250 each, depends on bargaining skill
Or
DIY 2 Superbright Constant Light with LED Lamps

C.Wireless Remote Trigger/Transceiver- Buy the YongNuo RF 603 (As per above get the correct mount for the brand you are using).
It's About Rm130 Per pair depends on bargaining skill, you will need 2 pair. If you DIY constant light with LED Lamps don't buy this.

D. Soft Box , you can DIY, i also DIY myself (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN87ti6XZ-8)

E. Stands for Flash and Umbrella (You can DIY too but I Malas) (Works the same way as D the soft Box). This I can't remb how much i bought but should be about RM200 per set.

How to shoot using these equipments?

How to set up the camera? then that is another story. Happy learning to shoot products and models and all the best in your business.

The above recommendation is a great way to start. smile.gif

Softbox DIY can be as easy as putting white cloth over PVC pipes.

In the end it still goes back to the budget available.

Another point of concern is "product" - photographing small items like fashion accessories is different from photographing medium sized items like pots and lamps.

See what I mean. By the time you decide which camera to buy and lens to use, also the right lightning equipment's it'll take you a few months to years depending on how fast you learn. smile.gif

Other than what is stated by post #11 above, another thing to consider is background.
Camera - not so important, so long as it can trigger flash gun remotely.
