The trend is that laptops are getting thinner and thinner.

According to Intel conference, starting from 2015 all laptop CPU will be soldered on board, so as to GPU. The reason is that GPU MXM slot and CPU PGA adds at least 1 to 1.5cm thickness to the laptop.

That being said, there might be no more MXM GPU and CPU PGA productions, Nvidia GTX970M/980M might be the last cards using MXM GPU slots.

Choosing a laptop depends on laptop GPU/CPU upgradability is not wise decision.

Hi guys, not sure here is the correct place to ask..
but what I want to ask is..

What's the different between
Primary Drive and Primary mSATA Solid State Drive ??
*
Hey Barret,

For e.g. if you are comparing Crucial M500 120GB SSD and Crucial M500 MSATA 120GB SSD.

SATA SSD performs slightly faster, consumes more power and heavier.

mSATA SSD is lighter, consumes less power.

if you want a long lasting battery life laptop, the weight will most likely be more than 2kg.. my z5 can last about 4-5 hours with 2.6kg weight..
Just to clarify, the Z5 is 2.4kg smile.gif

Hi JusJasMiNe,

ILLEGEAR RS-15, RS-17 EVO and RX-17 EVO use MXM slot smile.gif

ILLEGEAR users with Nvidia GTX 880M can upgrade their GPUs to GTX 980M.

i am adding to the further cons on VN7 not Z5. VN7 3 cell Z5 iirc is 6-cell
yes VN7 got no subwoofer - your post already mentioned that.

The other statement is on the wifi card. VN7 had a lousier one, but new Jan stock seems to be coming Intel 7265NGW so should be considered on par with Z5 now

ILLEGEAR Z5 has 8-cell battery just to clarify smile.gif

if i need both 3D rendering and photoshop? coz i most probably will need to first render the 3d, then touch up with photoshop.  Plus i saw the suggested system requirement for using Lumion is having at least a GTX 680 graphic card.
*
The more the vram the better the 3D rendering. Go for the machine with highend GPU with high vram that's within your 6k budget will do.

S5 default TN display is inferior and we are thinking to phase it out and only use the IPS (LG IPS display, not AHVA).

Our S7 17.3" 72% default display is decent though.

s7 default display greater than ips? significant difference?  hmm.gif

No.

S5 Default Display < S7 Default Display < S5 IPS < S5 PLS < S5 IGZO

bro wanna ask,

1. which parts exactly can be reused from my old Dell? I can't think of others except HDD only. The ram sure not compatible as it's DDR2.

2. Talking about parts, does the ASUS G551 or Illegear Z5 comes with extra bay to plonk in a 2nd hdd? thanks notworthy.gif

3. regarding the acer, don't really trust its build reliability and quality  sweat.gif had a bad experience in its previous general laptops
*
Hi Calvin,

Unfortunately the Z5 only has 1 SATA HDD bay, but it also has 2x mSATA SSD slots. We suggest you to reuse your 2.5" HDD and upgrade msata ssd when you need it.

Hi adibyusoff,

The discount and freebies we provided to you is 4 to 5 times greater than the RM50.

Hope you understand that there are extra works for us to test if your SSD is working with our machine or not.

Thank you.

Either one is fine, since I think you probably know what is the pros and cons of these two laptop. GT72 is using IPS screen right ? I think MSI high end model shouldn't have heat issue, so it is okay to get it.
If warranty and after sales service is essential for you, get MSI better, cause MSI should have service center at Kuching or area around there.
ILLEGEAR so far I just know of Damansara and JB have service center. Their pick up service didn't cover Kuching though.
But you can check out AW17 or 15 also, the price spec ratio is also very tempting. Quite worth it IMO.
Asus is also another option if you can ignore Asus poor warranty and after sales service.

P/S: I assume you're going to be in Kuching longer than in Sunway. If it is not, then ILLEGEAR can consider, 7k can get quite a good config also, PM Prince J for a quotation. Maybe there is still CNY promotion going on smile.gif
*
Just to clarify, ILLEGEAR onsite pickup service does cover Kuching area.

Thank you.

One question, is SSD important for 3D and rendering stuffs?
*
If the software save/load a lot of stuff from the storage drive then SSD would help very much.

illegear staff tell me z5 v1 that currently on the website is EOL  sweat.gif  v2 is  around RM4199.. sad  doh.gif

summoning jutsu.. Mr.Docter, Illegear z5 ver1 (gtx860m) still have?
*
We have 4 major upgrades in the v.2 Z5

1. IPS screen by default
2. Intel i7-4720HQ (v1 is 4710HQ)
3. GTX 960M/970M
4. Intel 7260-AC WLAN card by default

That makes it slightly more expensive than v.1 but still worth it smile.gif

Hi ptrfaith91,

I would suggest you to go 128GB MSATA SSD + 1TB 7200RPM, that's way better than single SSHD if you have the budget.
