Guys, I am a total noob on photography. Know nothing bout it, and my recent trip to bali, i took a point and shoot lumix along FT-4 along and found most pictures taken are bad, even my framing is bad. Was at uluwatu taking pics, then a couple from swiss asked my helped to take pics for them using their dslr (not sure what it is), and they told me to just click as everything is auto. Wow, the shot viewed from lcd was so good compared to mine. So I am convinced i need to buy a better cam and more importantly learn how to shoot.

Walked into sony store as it has promotion now, and was attracted to the a6000. Price with kit lens now is 2699. Was thinking if i should buy the package with SEL50F18 where it's RM 3200. I understand that is a prime lens right, without zoom. Should be easier for a novice like me, one less function bout camera for me to worry about. This camera will likely be use for travelling, taking pictures of ppl + scenery in it. Do let me know what lens combo will suit me most.

Also is sony centre running the best promo or outside standalone camera shop has better offer?

what i suggest is buy with 2699 first. reason: you still duno what u need from the camera. by using kit lens alone, u will know what is the limitation of the lens, so that when u going to buy a new lens, u will focus on these features.
eg.
- need a object to pop-up, more blurry background, get a smaller aperture
- need to shoot something from far, get zoom lens
- need to see everything in 1 picture or landscape, go for wide lens

most of the people buy camera for portrait and landscape, but how desire they are? what i trying to say is, some people think that F2.8 is enough for portrait, but for other people, they need at least F1.4 to get the better bokeh.

there is no best lens in this world, find the one which suit u the most  icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks for the tips. Yeah, actually after reading through what u say, paying RM 300 for the kit lens seems like good value to start off. But since my purpose is to use camera to shoot during travel/holidays, bokeh shot won't be used heavily. WIll like to capture pic of ppl with the background, if background becomes blur, kinda defeat the purpose of the holiday shot. what particular type of lens/settings is good for trying to take pic of two person standing by the beach, or near a cliff that can see canyon below, or where the person back ground is a mountain? or ppl standing in front of a building/door arch/statue.....You know, those typical travel shots.

I just bought my A6000 from the sony fair at lowyat. Bought it at one shop at the ground floor, I think it's fotokem.

Got myself the A6000 with kit lens + sony 16GB class 10 memory card. Free items from fotokem include the small blue camera pouch, a camera cleaner kit, and lcd screen protector for a total cost of RM 2400.

From the fair, Sony malaysia gave me one extra battery, another pouch, but it's actually meant for handycam, so not suitable for A6000 (where i think the pouch is useless), and a body case for A6000 which I have yet to collect as they have run out of stock today. Also, sony malaysia upgraded the warranty for my camera with kit lens to 3 years warranty. That is the fair promotion.

Also, I bought a prime lens SEL35F18 for RM 1k. But this has the normal Sony 1 year 3 months warranty.

I think I got a pretty good deal for this. However, the sales person sweet talk me into buying lens filter. I bought two lens filter, one for the kit lens SELP1650 and one for the SEL35F18. Each lens filter cost RM100. So total RM200 for the lens filter from this brand Steinzeiser (DMC UV 40.5mm and DMC UV 49mm). Have I overpaid for the lens filter?

Once back home, now I am charging up the battery. 2 complaints:

1. Why do I charge battery by connecting the cables to the camera? Panasonic has an external battery charger where I just stick my battery to the module.

2. How do I know when the battery is fully charged? I see a yellow light at the side of the camera body. It's been 4 hours since I charged and it's still yellow. Does it take so long to charge or only the first time?

just my opinion. if u prefer zoom lenses, A6000 + SEL18105G very suitable for ur style. furthermore, during fair, even my friend had bought these combo, included class10 16GB, screen protector, body case, extra battery, external charger, and Hoya Pro1D UV filter, total price around RM3800. as fair promises, the camera body entitled 3 years warranty by Sony Malaysia, meanwhile the lens entitled 12+3 months warranty. the FOC pouch looks just like a token, haha

anyway, if u happy with kit lens and the prime lens, don't need to care too much

The fair doesn't give 3 years warranty for both body and lens? I was told by the fair person it gives 3 years warranty for both, but I wasn't sure to believe her or not. When I heard free warranty 1+2 years, I almost felt like buying A6000 + SEL1670Z but decided i should not spend that much. The idea of additional warranty for the expensive lens seems worth it.

I agree, the FOC pouch seems like a token, totally no use at all. The fair value is in the extra battery, the body case and the extra 2 years warranty.

not surprised. because the SEL18105G is not kit lens for A6000, thus only body entitled extended warranty. however, there got special promotion for bundled package for SEL18105G G lenses, too. imagine, A6000 (RM2399) + SEL18105G (RM1999), total RM4398 RRP; during sony fair, promo around RM3800 with damn a lot of freebies, with additional charger, why not? about same as u purchase the A6000 with kit lens + prime lens
well, for me, extra battery isn't value much at all. for new user, if u have 2 unit or even more batteries, but u only can charge battery via USB either connecting camera with power cord or computer, u had to charge and charge the battery without using the camera. just example, when u travelling, u realized of 1 of battery had exhausted, and that time u need taking photographs, not possible leave the camera for charging the battery inside hotel without take it out for taking photo, as there another additional battery still capable for take photographs, right?

If only you posted this earlier before my purchase, i would have gone for it. Your friend's package of RM3800 is damn good deal especially it has the free external battery charger. How much does that cost?

I agree with you extra battery has no value if one does not have the external battery charger, having to connect cable to camera to charge camera is just plain stupid.

Bought a Sony external battery charger from vincentlee90 for RM150. Now my extra free battery given from the Sony fair would be more useful.

Being a novice in photography, I am not sure if I should invest more and buy the SEL1670Z zeiss lens that is on sale now for RM 2600 or should i wait later when I have improved on my skills. Guys, say 1 year from now, is the price of that lens likely to be cheaper? Like electronic gadgets, note 3 price next year will be cheaper than this year?

boeing still selling at a good price from my last visit 2 months ago. comparable to the whole area, the price inside lowyat plaza is sky high compared to them

Well, I would say price really differ from shop to shop depend on what package you are looking for. Some shop sell camera cheap, lens slightly more pricy, or accessory more pricy. I bought my SEL35F18 for RM999 last month during the hari raya promo at fotokem in lowyat (price was cheap cause I bought the Sony A6000 from them as well). Before committing to the purchase, I personally visited 8 camera shops ( within lowyat, sungei wang, mid valley), and called up two shops (yl, digitalmania and another japanese sounding website). Standard camera with kitlens price all the shops are roughly the same. But with package certain shops can do better. So, to find the cheapest, one just have to go do the extra footwork.

Hi, I actually considering to sell my whole set of Sony A-6000 with kit lens + SEL35f1.8 and all accessories. Planning to let go whole set. Bought during raya period. Got extended 3 years warranty for my purchase as it was during promotion period. Warranty already registered by Sony themselves in Mysony.com. Selling cause I am totally not using this cam at all. Next week I should be putting it up in garage sales.
