Back then when I was a kid, lots of my kampungmen played mercun like no tomorrow. They even got meriam besi at that time and I played together with them. Nothing happened. Unlike kids nowadays.

Moral of the story: don't hold the mercun if your hand is not fast enough to throw the mercun right after you lit it.

But there were powerful mercun like mercun plug and meriam back then which could also destroy your arm if you're not carefully playing them.
