This is 3rd day I play my lovely xbox 360. The heated wind exhaust from the 2 fans makes me worrying. Right now I have table fan facing the left side of the xbox to cool it down. For sure it will not help much in cooling down internally. I read the water cooling solution, any other can recommend? icon_question.gif

dont worry just make sure your 360 is placed at an open space. make sure the back is well ventilated. actually would like to suggest you getting nyko intercooler but my intercooler is messing with my 360 at the moment. stop using it already.

Play in an air-con'd room. And after a few hours of play, give the 360 a 20 minute break or something (which is what I usually do)

Another thing to try is to see if the air coming out the back of the 360 is just warm or it feels like it's coming out of a hairdryer

If air is flowing out of your 360 and it's not sizzling hot, you should be ok.

Just because it's in an air cond room doesn't mean it's cold, unless your air cond is blowing right at it lar.

Intercooler with pass through power connector is messing with the main voltage going into the 360 either electric noise or drawing current away from the 360.

if you put your console horizontal, get something to make your console "leg" higher around 1/2 inch so there will be more air flow below it. been doing it since ps1 days. icon_rolleyes.gif

So let me compile the summary of cooling xbox 360:-

1. Nyko Intercooler (how much?)
2. Air cond (your dad may curse you on electricity bill tongue.gif)
3. Notebook cooling pad (facing which side?)
4. Hang the xbox in the mid air (how? tongue.gif)
5. Elevated height if put horizontal (can put on the floor?)

Found out on gamerspot.com, there are 2 main causes for the system hang and overheat:
1. console itself
2. the uber power brick

For the power brick, "hang" in the air trick is put it on top of a shoe box with the box cover removed. It will let the heat dissipates in all direction.

I merely use table fan to cool my 360. Just tembak the air from table fan on the right side of the 360. The one that will be on the bottom when 360 is positioned vertically.

I think the exhaust fan are meant to be hot~ (approx around 47 celcius ? ) when playing games that time.

once if you are not playing games it will go back to normal.

but if you want best soluiton.. open up xbox 360 fan and use table fan directly blow~ thumbup.gif

Suspend your 360 in mid-air? I think it was suspend your power-brick in mid-air. I put mine on a shoe box so it doesn't touch the ground and it never gets hot tongue.gif

3 Red Lights simply mean hardware error/failure. Not "OMFG DUDE YOU'RE XBOX IS SCREWED" tongue.gif I encountered the Red Lights when I had some trippy voltage. My 360 is perfectly fine now. Not 'kaput' yet laugh.gif

Hi all,
My solution to prevent overheating internally : Use 4 pieces of chinese chesspiece (made of wood or marble or any material) and put them under the horizontal xbox, elevate the xbox so that ventilation is better. Will tell you the outcome soon tongue.gif

It works very nice. The fans aren't working so hard and the whole system running smooth! thumbup.gif
I strongly advise you not to put it on vertical (though looks cool), this console need to "breath" and exhale the heat doh.gif

Hi All,
With some research on hot air gun method to fix the 0102 3 red lights of death. I found out the root cause of this problem.

Due to excessive heat produce at the GPU (332 millions transistors) and it is covered by a normal aluminium heatsink. Furthermore, our 12x DVDROM also produces heat. The heat & cold cycle will eventually cause mechanical stress on 360 PCB. The soldering points will develop cold solder joint effect which will cause no current flow to our RAM chips, GPU and etc. Thus, the curse of 3 red lights of death will happen!

FYI, you may read the blog and the link provided by the blog.
Cold Solder Joint Weblog by Calvin Hsia
Cold Solder Joints (Technical article)

I think believe MS should use a socket to secure the GPU and the CPU rather than solder on the board (like our normal PC motherboard). But this creates another problem, modder will have fun on the board tongue.gif

hmm..i think i've asked this last year..but i'll ask again now.

they're so many stories about the 3 red lights (of death) which is usually caused by overheating, if not hardware failure.

even some seniors/experienced lyn forumers get these problems..

so how stable is this x360 really is? i mean like, are these problems zeroed in on an early batch of x360s..or is it still happening to later batches too? i just hope and pray hard that i won't get this much trouble when finally getting hands on a set.

also..does provision of good ventilation for the psu and the x360 set itself, enough to avoid overheating/3 red lights?

man i'm scared reading those horror stories..(nama pun horror stories)

then again..even the ps1 had its fair share of overheating..but luckily i didn't get that prob..only when the motor for the lens gave out that i had to change it. same goes for my ps2. hopefully my luck will remain with an x360.. sweat.gif

Let's take a test...

How many gamer tags are there in the registry topic?
How many people have had their console killed by the 3 red lights?

From there you can see that there really aren't that many horror stories, Just keep your power supply and unit properly ventilated. I don't have an AC room to play in, the 360 just sits in a normal AV cabinet (doors opened of course) and I could still play DR and survive for 5 days.. no problems!

hey guys..since i'm cheap...i thought of buying a usb fan and pointing it towards the right side of the x360 (when in horizontal)..the fan should be blowing tht way right? so tht the hot air blows out the back?

u guys think it's a worthy investment..or shud i go with a better cooling system?

That is pretty useless. That USB fan is not that powerful! Get a table fan. aaa. This one is better.

yea i know..even tho it cools the best..but a lot of problems la from customers..burnt connectors..messing up power distribution..damn.

but anyway..i'm keeping the set in a open space..put it on a 3 tier rack, topmost and the power supply is on a shoe-box like box so it's not directly on the parquet floor, located behind the rack. also elevated the set (horizontally) by putting double layers of anti skid pads so air flow ada below the set. smile.gif shud be ok right this setup?

so far today been leaving it on for 8 hours to download stuff..no problems and God forbid if anything happens.

but will consider buying small table fan or the slim one as recommended by necro.

maybe air from fan disrupting the proper airflow? or too kuat the angin and..i dunno..x360 ni is a mysterious console.. laugh.gif

anyway..if i were to use a fan..i should be blowing it to the right side of the set (when horizontal) right? so that air goes in from there and cools cpu and also helps flushing the hot air out the back vents right?

it happens again....hmmmm weirdlah my console......everytime off the PSU totally..meaning no power at all..(main switch off)...it goes to blinking red when on...then off on its okay.....i also leave the game disc inside.....then remove and on back its okay....dunno whether its the game disc inside issue or the power brick problem....well as long i can play my games.....good enough though....

hmm...i dunno but maybe your power supply is getting faulty? why not test with someone else's psu..or send it to someone to take a look at it.

personally eventhough i can still play games, knowing the fact that the psu is acting abnormally makes me uneasy. smile.gif

why don't u try not to switch the main power off, just switch the console off. wait for a few hours, then switch the console back on. if nothing happens to the psu during the few hours, maybe something is wrong with the psu (cos it works fine when u didn't turn the main power off). i'm just afraid that the constant switching of the main power kinda made the psu wonky.

better ask the pros..i'm new to the set myself, but just giving my opinion. smile.gif hope everything goes well carnby!
