About your question, just like what you said there, get a entry level cam from Nikon/Canon, or maybe consider about Olympus or Sony as well. Slowly learn from shooting with DSLR, then only invest more on the lenses and flash. I'm sure this thread will be your first sharing place when you get your shooting gears.

Nothing beat Nikon and Canon camera system. Go test shoot with either one.

Try to learn about the camera. It's a camera with potential if you can fully utilise its features and mount some IF ED VR lens on it, get some good shots!
