Hi Guys,
Any 408T here had a timing chain change before? My car show a engine fault error and the error code is P0016: Synchronization.
After diagnostic by Balakong SC, the cause is the timing chain, which need to be changed. Price quoted is pretty high so want to make sure it will solve the issue by asking members in this forum. Was informed the warranty wouldn't cover the timing chain cost.
Mileage is approx. 113,000km and a June 2012 car.

QUOTE(EP6CDTM @ Aug 14 2015, 02:37 PM) My 408T is more than 3 years, so it's under 2-year extended warranty. Balakong SC informed timing chain is not covered under the warranty parts. From the extended warranty booklet, the explanation on the parts under warranty is kind of vague. Any opinion on whether I should demand for warranty timing change replacement?

QUOTE(SKYjack @ Aug 19 2015, 08:29 AM) What u say about this extended warranty is very true. T & C are rather vague, what exactly is covered is not clear. IMO, timing chain is covered under extended warranty. You should approach Clic & also get an independent legal opinion on this. I have called CLIC, routed to the extended warranty dept but later was conveniently pushed to Tune Insurance as the extended warranty issuer. Called Tune and the guy confirmed timing chain is not covered under the extended warranty. I asked to show which part of the booklet says so and he pointed out the last sentence in the covered parts section; "Timing belts/timing chains and its related components should be changed in accordance with the manufacturer recommended intervals." Anyone know what's the interval for timing chain change? If the recommended timing chain interval is more than my current mileage, do you think I have a case to demand for warranty claim?

IMO, timing chain is covered under extended warranty. You should approach Clic & also get an independent legal opinion on this. Just to close the loop. I have given a call to Clic to request for timing chain coverage and the answer is timing chain is covered while under manufacturer's warranty (means the first 3 years) but during the extended warranty, it depends on the insurance company discretion. I gave feedback the description of covered parts in the extended warranty booklet is vague and asked to provide the exact list of parts being covered by the extended warranty. But was asked to refer to the insurance company for the list and the insurance company also just asked to refer only to the booklet. I think such vaguely-worded terms will leave rooms for ambiguity and offhandedness. I was thinking to get the timing chain replacement done at independent workshop as it's cheaper but strange thing was the error did not pop up anymore after driving it for almost 2 months. Hopefully it stays that way, finger crossed. However, the damage was RM300+ as the service center charged for dis-assemble and re-assemble the engine for diagnostic purpose and also some gaskets.
