I spent quite a while typing up this response in the health section and I thought I'd share it here since I know sometime people can be really obsessed with deodorants as there is a huge social stigma attached to sweating and stinking. For context, this was a reply to someone who thought that maca root deodorant was a good substitute for the usual aluminium based anti-prespirants.

I believe those stuff are nonsense la. Maca root what? I would stay away from herbal remedies if I were you. Herbs contain many different chemicals in them and you can't even be sure what's really in that thing. All natural things are very complex with but with experience we know things like chicken and bak choy are safe to eat since they are very common. People have been eating them for ages and a lot of studies have been done on them.

But maca root is not and I believe Body Shop doesn't do animal test either.

All deodorants will have aluminum in them. There are two classes of deodorants. One is the anti-perspirant type and the other is the 'natural' salt stick type. Both of them have aluminum compounds in then. The 'natural' label doesn't really mean anything since they're all chemicals anyway.

Here's the difference. the anti prespirant works by killing bacteria and clogging your pores in your skin so sweat can not come out of your armpits. There are a few problems with this. While you can't sweat from your armpits, your body will have to make up for that some how and you'll just sweat more from other parts of your body. Face, hands, crotch (ewww fungal infection?) and so on. Secondly who know who much of the stuff stays in your pores after you shower?

There are a few compounds that is normally used in the antiprespirant type
Aluminium choloride - a neurotoxin
Aluminium chlorohydrate - seems to be safe
Aluminium zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly - can stain clothes
Plus a whole bunch of other chemicals

On the other hand, those salt stick type deodorants uses "Potassium alum". The reason it's called natural is because you can actually mine it naturally instead of synthesizing it in the lab. So it's been used for quite a while for many different purposes.

It seems to be safe so far and it's function is to kill bacteria and not clog up your pores. So you'll still sweat like normal.

Plus it has only one chemical in there. So either your skin will be fine with potassium alum or it will not be.

If you really want to stay away from aluminum there are a few options.

Very common natural antibiotics. Onions, ginger, tumeric. But it is probably not practical and will stain your clothes.

Anti-bacterial creams. Remember deodorants work because they kill bacteria. You can easily find chlorohexadine based. It normally wont stain clothes unless free chlorine is present. So you must not use hydrocloric acid or sodium hypocloride bleaches. Also note that anti-bacterial creams are NOT anti-biotic creams. You must NOT use anti-biotic creams without a doctor's prescription and monitoring.

Another things you can use is Aiken Medicated Talc. This contains zinc oxide, an anti-bacterial agent. It also has chlorohexadine.
