In the January-March quarter, Samsung garnered a global market share of 12.7%, while industry leader Nokia had 32.8%, according to data from research outfit Strategy Analytics.
Second-ranked Motorola had a 20.1% share, LG Electronics Inc. held 6.8% and Sony Ericsson achieved 5.8%. In short: 1. NOKIA 2. MOTOROLA 3. SAMSUNG 4. LG 5. SONY ERICSSON ( oops, my mistake. QUOTE(rayzrblade @ Aug 13 2006, 10:01 PM) LYN = Tech Enthutiast's Discussion forum SE ain't popular worldwide because most of the people around are not really geeky and look for something that look nice but not necessarily good Anyways JK lar, I don't know the reason either. But one thing for sure is the ranking does not necessarily reflect the quality of the mobile phone mafacturer, neither does it reflect the amount the profit they've earned. Believe it or not, some companies can make big profit even though they don't dominate the market share. It is influenced by their marketting strategy, the area they are targetting, the user groups they are targetting etc. etc. There are many other factors to consider dude. I think la...
1) Nokia 2) SE 3) Samsung 4) Moto the rest i duno... Nokia... as many of them Nokia fans still blindfold by it brand but can't accept that others make cheaper n better function phone... SE is growing fast bundle a good package of function n price... Samsung growing like SE it phone is having a good design, n the leading slide n clamshell phone manufacturer... Moto, now it's theme is slim... so ppl will go for it's slim phone... After i test all those phones by exchanging phones with frens n so... I find out that SE phones have the best battery life... simple n nice menu... Nokia have the best compability n of course the accesories... Moto have the most lagging tag on them... their phone's software still lag... Samsung have the best inovation design... this is jus my single cens opinion... |

SE should really work on their ads if they ever want to go up in the list.
Compare SE and Nokia ads. It's like comparing a rock with a sun. |

THE ACTUAL RANKING OF THE MOBILE COMPANYS MARKET SHARE WORLDWIDE
In the January-March quarter: 1. NOKIA 32.8% 2. MOTOROLA 20.1% 3. SAMSUNG 12.7% 4. LG 6.8% 5. SONY ERICSSON 5.8% SOURCE IF for Msia only, i think this is how it should be: 1. Nokia ( user frenly with wide range for different market) 2. S.E ( value with for money with "looks" n loads of functions) 3 Motorola ( most of the people cant adapt to Motos UI) 4. Samsung ( no resale value and with the wrong concept of "for ladies" only) 5. LG ( no resale value and msia cant accept new brands) |

SE is popular bcoz of its camera quality n sound quality which appeals 2 most youths, not to mention the affordability of their phones, nokia on the other hand seems 2 be offering phones on par or worse than SE's with ridiculous prices...

Like for example, IrDA(got bluetooth),3G(No signal and using digi),GPRS(Expensive, then not much that can be downloaded to my phone since got card reader already) But for video recording,i use it ocasionally...Sometimes need to record some funny moment, and its the good time to use it since 902sh can capture good quality video |

While you all keep thinking of function and how POWDERFUL is the phone, did you all forget about those aunties and uncles? You mean they don't contribute to the market share? They use phone also. And what they need is just making call. Simple as possible. Ringtone as loud as possible (their hearing functionality is degrading).
Some manufacturer do think of this area, they have wide range of selection. So in the end, they deserve a high market share. Well, come to think of it, does market share means popular? You go and figure out yourselves. |

Maybe that's why SE is so popular at LYN but didn't quite make it to #1 (as hoped by SE fans), becos the majority of users out there don't quite care for Walkman function and auto-focus.Some manufacturer do think of this area, they have wide range of selection. So in the end, they deserve a high market share. Well, come to think of it, does market share means popular? You go and figure out yourselves. My father-in-law changes phone every couple of months not because of the trend, but becos the heavy usage cracks/breaks the phones. His latest is Nokia 6070, selected for its nice usable keypad and large fonts when dialling (just like Samsung, but much more solid). There simply isn't anything by SE which he finds suitable. Let's face it, SE targets the younger generation mostly (and they're not the world, sorry), while Nokia covers all bases from age range to phone price. An SE fan would say, "SE has best function for its price" but would you pay for something you're not using? Just as you wouldn't pay more for S60, a lot of people wouldn't pay more for Walkman/Cybershot either. SE fans must be pissed at this and thinking of comebacks, but bear in mind that I'm not a Nokia fan and I've been an SE user for 1 year half too, but some features like the phonebook, Notes application, SMS handling, etc, are just better on the Nokia side of the fence. |

Why do you guys care so much about the market share anyway? Nokia is dominating the market because
- It is relatively established and matured compare to other manufacturers like SE. The reputation/early impression is very important actually. For example, even Norton Antivirus is like sh*t nowadays a lot of people still trust it because of the early reputation it has built. - They are a big scale company and they produce mobile phones massively, and thus it's reasonable to say that they dominate the market. Just see how many new models they've come out in each year. Use a bigger net and you'll get more fishes - A lot of people are still holding old models like 3310/8250 and/or going to buy lower end phones like 6610i, while SE is currently focusing on higher end models and getting good sales in models like K750/800 and their W-series (their low cost K510 or J series don't get good respond as nokia). So it is not a surprise that Nokia still having big market share overall. The ranking only reflects how the manufacturers do in their overall product lines, not a particular model It's childish and unimportant to compare which brand is better by just looking at the brand ranking alone. If you feel comfortable with the phone you're using, then you should feel glad. It's unecessary to feel upset just because your favourite brand doesn't do good in the ranking. You're the end user and you're the one who decides whether your current mobile phone suits you This post has been edited by samurai1337: Aug 18 2006, 08:18 AM |

No offense to amedion, but you talk like Malaysia handphone sales stats should be based on 1 seller. |

There's a lot of "i think this... i think that" in this thread. this think-thonk-thing-thong leads to nowhere. We need to have an independent market research with lotsa samples. Getting the sales figure for a specific period from each brand manufacturer in Malaysia is not accurate - as there are many ppl bought the hphone 'underwater'. go hire IDC, Gartner etc and you get the answer.

motorola e398 user. Pretty darn phone, drop countless times still solid, Function is good enough. Who says motorola is a cheesy phone maker?
Not a motorola fan boy though through out my mobile history(2 sets), i only used motorola. However on both occasions, i wanted to go for first nokia and samsung after that SE for the second time, only to find myself beyond budget. But motorola kept me happy for those times |

I think Nokia has the most market share in the world (see rayzrblade) as well as in the country, Malaysia. When I makan in 5 starts coffee house or food court or kopitiam or mamak, prone to see more nokias from youth to middle age. Furthermore, the company I am working in provides at least a few hundred company phones to its employees. I think most of them are mid range Nokia and some Black Berries. Personally, I have around 8 nokias and 1 SE K750.

QUOTE(Dannyl @ Aug 18 2006, 09:09 AM) Dude. Think. If a Nokia 5210 breaks after 2 months, how long would a SE W800 last under the same condition? 2 weeks? ah, u r comparing a basic phone with a decent phone.. i thought u mean nokia which has a decent feature.. my bad my bad.. in that case, 3310 rules So how many shops in Malaysia does amedion own and how many hundreds of thousands of customers have he had? No offense to amedion, but you talk like Malaysia handphone sales stats should be based on 1 seller. no, the statistic not from amedion alone.. i myself is seller also n yes, i do agree with amedion that his n my sales is almost the same which is over 10 phones, 8 also SE.. this can be further support by the help of forumer 'clareen' who are the recent most active seller |

SE popular in certain places only. and not all of its model is available in each and every country.
in terms of marketing strategy, nokia wins. so that's why nokia gets the highest sales worldwide lo. PS: this is my opinion only, OPINION!! don't flame me. i'm scared of hot. |

Each to their own. What you buy is what you get. Although I'm more to the SE camp I won't say it's all perfect. Some Nokia, and motorola, and whatever models have what my phone doesnt, and vice versa. Every brand has it strengths and flaws.

I think this is top 3 brand in malaysia...
1)Nokia 2)SE 3)Moto It's kinda hard to find 2nd-hand phone for SE or moto but for Nokia you can find it easily everywhere else in the shop whether town or village. Before this i'm a great supporter of Nokia but recently i getting bored with Nokia. Almost everything except for very friendly text message. This is not my main attention. S60 is great but i found it to be messy and get bored with the UI and the boring menu, themes and also the startup things (it's very damn long to wait until it startup succesfully!). I can get S60 3rd party software easily without pay but when you gonna install a lot of stuff inside the phone it will became laggy, crash, etc... After all i don't use these stuff a lot. After sometimes playing with its application i'm getting bored with it and start to reset back to the factory default setting. I don't say that Nokia is not good.. it's good but I just get bored with it. Start from using 3210, 3310, 8210, 8250, 6600, 7610, N-Gage, N-Gage QD, 6260, 6630 & N70 Me. For me there's no much different on S60. The only Nokia phone i like right now is N95. Now when i'm using SE, i think it suit my taste enough with great UI, good camera, good picture, ultra-bright screen (not as dark as nokia has), good sound, nice design and not bad for the features too! Motorola also good since can mod the phone easily... Sound also good! This only my opinion.... You might have different taste.. Stick to what you like and go for it... |

lol.. samsung phone have no values when you wanna sell them. A lot of shop refused to buy back samsung to sell as 2nd hand. If you say that LYP phone shop will buy from you at high value, forget it. Almost a lot of phone shop refuses to buy samsung phone even you have good function at all.. So i doubt that Samsung is 2nd or 3rd phone market ranking in malaysia. Indeed that samsung have very bright and good screen but if there's no value i rather get nokia phone as it's so easy to sell then in the future...

i guess its true geeks choose se lol. in my school's cyber club i can see at 3 out of 5 members using SE.. me, k750, my junior w800, and my friend w810
i too think that samsung is just a newcomer and i only know one guy with a samsung phone lol.. and one guy with LG...the rest, dominated by SE and nokia, middle is moto..but nokias definitely first. SE could be third or second so could moto.... |
