Adobe Premiere will crash if it doesn't have the right codec. Happened to me several times. Also, I get crashes if I try to import a divx/xvid file. So, I stop using Premiere.

You can try Sony Vegas. You can get the trial/demo version at http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/
