Just curious. Does our local defense industry have the ability to make produce our own armaments like the missiles, mortars, bullets and stuff like Indonesia is starting to do? Because during the Falklands War, France actually helped the UK against their own customers (the Argentinians) by giving them the detailed intel and source code on the hardware they sold to them after the UK suffered significant losses (including a Destroyer or two) from the French-made missiles. If we can develop our own armaments then we wouldn't have to depend on foreign countries as much since they wouldn't think twice about turning on us and assisting any of our "enemies".

Jepunis WWII Carriers, Battleships, some destroyers I think and a bunch of aircraft. They used to use shitloads of cheapo aircraft in battles and the AA sucked so much that they could only defend using other aircraft tongue.gif

Iron Dome:

I haz a noob question: why does Israel see a need to develop their own anti-rocket system, instead of simply just buying those from US (Patriot) or UK (Jernas)?
*
For the same reason why they have their own tanks, aircraft (I don't think they make their own fighter jets anymore though) and pretty much everything else from basic arms and munitions to missiles to tanks with the exception of ships and submarines (German). To reduce dependency on others. They're constantly at war due to their aggressive and hostile neighbors. They need the best and most up to date military hardware and a local military industrial complex to resupply them due to lessons learned in their previous wars. The Merkavas are a fine example of a constantly evolving military platform that takes lessons learned from previous conflicts and are constantly improved based on the data garnered. Plus the Iron dome missiles (tens of thousands) are a lot cheaper than Patriot missiles (millions) so it's a better cost-effective solution to a low tech problem (rockets from Hamas/Hezbollah). It's one of the best if not the best missile shield systems out there and the Americans even want to co-produce it for their own use (seeing as how they helped fund it). They're even developing a laser-based defense system called the Iron Beam.

So...Indonesia can't use F-16 against threatening neighboring forces even if it is for legit purpose?

Well....Indonesia under SBY administration is passive anyway, to the extend that many foreign forces breach the territory.
*
The muricans hold a portion of the munitions for any of US-made planes in reserve and Indonesia (as well as anyone else who uses US planes) needs to "apply for permission from US Congress" to use the rest. That's the problem with sourcing your military hardware from the US...they can refuse to let you have access to your own stuff that you paid for and you can't do shit about it. If they refuse to sell spare parts or anything else to you (like Iran prior to the Iraq-Iran War) then your jets will just rot in their hangars because you can't get replacement parts from anywhere else. When you run out of ammunition then they're just useless hunks of metal. That's why half our stuff is Russian. We can even source spare parts from India or China without going through Russia.

be used as a target locator", said Carlqvist.

When asked of his opinion on the TNI-AL's consideration of operating up to 20 such vessels, Carlqvist said that the figure seems reasonable given that the Indonesian Navy has plans to increase its fleet by up to 200 ships by 2024. "Some of these might include the Klewang-class given its suitability for the archipelagic nature of Indonesia's maritime territories", he said.

The first Klewang-class vessel is expected to enter service by 2016.
