I tot the contract for SGPV also included money to upgrade the BHS shipyard. So, why should we buy foreign ships when BHS will eventually capable of doing so? Purchase for more surface ships aint coming in near future anyway..

bunga mas 5&6 only auxiliary vessel, i think they carry one or two heli and machine gun only, not enuff to be lhd unless use 200,000 ton freighter and make super big landing space plus cannot land troops/tanks/trucks

Indonesian know how to stretch their defence budget when it come to buying ships. Beside the 3 Nakhoda Ragam, local build such as their FAC, LPD and now LST are doing pretty well. Even though the LPD and the LST were derive from existing commercial design and built grade ship, it does help speed up in their number of navy hulls. Their ToT, unlike ours, are never gone to waste as they continue to build in volume.
Biggest different can be seen is they buy with defence in mind. Our government have been buying with trade balance as priority, defence as second. Our Hawk, Mig-29N, PT-91M... were all chosen partly because of this. As if not bad enough, our former PM Tun M started the drive to build up local defence industries by subjecting all procurement and maintenance to go through local bumiputra companies which only created more unjustifiable cost. To ensure this policy being follow up, priority is always at local defence industries first, defence second. Latest example to this is our navy Gowind procurement which not only fork out billions to expend BNS shipyard but also the requirement of RMN is being dictated to by BNS and it license partners.
Let hope MAF will have a bigger budget to work with in the coming years as we need to divide the share of it with our local defence industries...
