Malaysia and US start war games in Tanduo



KOTA KINABALU: Malaysian and American military personnel kicked off an joint exercise near a seaside settlement in Sabah’s east coast that was site of the intrusion of Sulu gunmen in February 2013.

The nine day Malaysia – United States Amphibious Exercise 20 (MALUS AMPHEX 4) began on Monday at Kampung Tanduo in Lahad Datu district and will end on Sept 2.

A United States embassy official said the exercise was aimed at improving the Malaysian and American security forces’ amphibious training, readiness and interoperability.

The training include shipboard familiarisation, medical and dental capabilities, weapons familiarisation, amphibious rehearsals with ship-to-shore connectors, live-fire ranges and Rapid Response Planning Process.

The exercise would also see the execution of an amphibious assault and landing, and reconstitution.

The official said those involved in the exercise include the 7th and 22nd Royal Malay Regiments personnel as well as US Marines and sailors from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group.

“The US military and Malaysian Armed Forces have partnered in counter-terrorism operations since 1985 and have participated in numerous exercises over the years,” the official said.

“MALUS AMPHEX 14 is a realistic and challenging exercise that brings service members closer and improves both nations’ ability to work bilaterally, which better prepares both nations to provide regional and global security.”

I'm not able to come down for the 2014 Hari Merdeka parade due to work commitments.

Hopefully there will be a 2014 MAF day parade in September at Dataran Merdeka again.
