Hi Sifus,

would like to check with you guys

I went to survey some rings,

Degem - 0.3 carat G SI1 around RM5900

Tomei - 0.3 carat D VVS1 around RM7800

1. Is Degem EEE (forevermark) rating better than GIA?

2. T lumiere arrow/heart design - can only get this in T?.

3. PK has this 101 cut I can't tell vs average 57 cuts is it worth looking at?

through my eyes I really cant see a difference between the rings. aside from the rating they tell me.

Need sifus advice, is De Beers rating better than GIA/ should I rely on the rating more ?

Ok I am still at a total lost picking stones from Zcova/Lavin NY site. =( looks ok to my eyes but once I punch in the HCA rating its mostly 4-5. As what I read in the previous pages should be around <2 being Ideal 0.5 to 1.4 rate. Any step by step of what specs should I look at ?

from the cut estimator , any idea how to read the blue/red box. does it mean if the if the green dot is within the boxes it is considered good?

I am looking for a 0.3ct with H&A with a total budget of RM5k setting close to Solitaire Tiffany design , and appreciate your kind help. Thank you very much

1. Is Degem EEE (forevermark) rating better than GIA?
Ans:
GIA is the gold standard. They may be a possibility that what they claim is true, since GIA 3EX can also be not-so-good diamonds, but on the other hand, this can be pure marketing gimmick. For Cut, I would probably start to look for something that falls within the best range of both standards in terms of proportions - Find a diamond that has Excellent Cut for Forevermark, then use the proportions and see if it meets GIA Excellent Cut. As for Symmetry and Polish, this one we can only ASSUME both are equal and interchangeable. Overall, only by sending the same diamond to grading lab can determine its 4Cs the best. I usually just tell people to trust the cert/brand you buy, if you have doubts, then find the lab report or brand that you trust better. Diamond grading is very subjective, the results can be different even if you send the same diamond back to the same lab to be reevaluated again. If you still have doubt, just get GIA graded diamonds, follow the industry standard. Even big names like Cartier, Bvlgari use GIA graded diamonds.

2. T lumiere arrow/heart design - can only get this in T?. <- What's this? I only heard "T" motif for Tiffany & Co before.  blink.gif

3. PK has this 101 cut I can't tell vs average 57 cuts is it worth looking at?
Ans: More facets mean it should scintillate more, at the expense of the size of the sparks. Imagine one big piece window partition into 4 smaller pieces, before that you see 1 big window with bright light, now you see 4 smaller windows with bright light, and sometimes each window's light glowing at different brightness intensity (scintillating). I actually quite like diamonds with more facets these days, but they usually come with much higher premium, making them not that worth it in comparison to the traditional 57 facets with the same 4Cs. You can probably try to view the diamonds under normal shopping light, closer to the entrance, if your PK is in one of the shopping. See if you can see any difference. You can also ask the salesperson to move the diamond slowly in a 8 circle motion (something like calibrating compass on your smartphone), and see if you any difference.

De Beers rating better than GIA?
Ans: De Beers basically runs the whole show of diamond business, while GIA is more of an independent party, I would try independent party more.

To get better score for HCA?
Ans:
You can try to follow WhiteFlash ACA specs:

Or you can refer to Lazare Diamond specs:
https://elitetraveler.com/shopping-lifestyl...lazare-diamonds

In Malaysia, Lazare diamond is carried by DeGem, you can have a look at their showroom.

Cut Estimator?
Ans: Within the blue/red box or on the line, to me. is consider good. It meets both GIA EX Cut and AGS Ideal Cut theoretically.

0.3ct with H&A with a total budget of RM5k setting close to Solitaire Tiffany design?
Ans: Looks quite feasible. You can probably get a H&A or near H&A diamond with this budget. You want really good H&A, look at offers by Brian Gavin Diamonds, such as this one: https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/0.307-e-...?a_aid=myengexp (affiliate link). I think they are throwing some promo now, not sure if applicable for Black by Brian Gavin, you can try ask them and see. The promo should be ending soon I think. It is for April diamond month.

example in question
GIA 7391718291?
35.5 crown pair with 41.2 pavilion...
Here is an example of diamond with similar table, crown angle and pavilion angle, you make your own call:

Thank you for your valuable input! very much appreciate all the info and explanation as I learned and appreciate diamonds more.

2. T = thats Tomei with their Le Lumiere series. Didnt know earlier that H&A can be from any supplier.

hmm.gif Also I didn't know Ideal cut exists, thanks for the info and recommendation for the Brian Gavin piece.

Do you think it would be possible to look for a Super Ideal cut within the budget range too? Thanks in advance !

Hearts & arrows is just a pattern that can be observed when a round brilliant diamond is well-cut enough.

Basically AGS just use Ideal Cut, GIA just use Excellent Cut for their top range, but don't get confused with all these naming. Even super ideal is just a marketing term use by vendors to call their top range diamonds. Some vendors use this term vaguely, but some vendors do filter out the best diamonds available, so becareful. Basically what you should look for is workmanship of the diamond and the quality of the diamond itself. This is just in exams, some like to use High Distinction, some like to use A+, just put that all aside, and look for diamonds that fall within a good proportion with a good workmanship.

I already provided something close to your budget earlier. You can also explore more on their website.

For example, if you want to max at your budget, then perhaps this piece:

I don't think BGD provide free shipping, so you may need to add an additional USD 50 (more or less) for shipping, making the final price to be:

This leaves you with a balance of RM 1650 for ring setting, which should be enough. If you are in PJ/KL area, I can do the setting for you, but if you are not, then you have to survey the price for setting yourself. Some may mark-up by quite a bit since you do not purchase the diamond from them.

For wire transfer, you can just use Wise, which is pretty fast and decent: https://wise.com/invite/u/yangk31 (referral link)

Hi Sifu,

Thanks for your feedback and patience, still waiting on the video from Brian Gavin to make a decision,

Would like to have your opinion on ring size for ring size 9 (47.7) 15.2 , is 0.3ct alright? having dilemma on whether to pick 0.3/0.4ct as the price gap is quite abit.

Is it true that a well cut 0.3ct can look bigger than 0.4ct?

Any tips on shortlisting the "worse inclusions"/"prominent areas" that have them to filter?

Also noticed I couldnt not get the free daily 3 times HCA calculator to view, is it still available fore x3 free daily?

your earlier pick

This is only true if the 0.4ct is terribly cut, but this may only happen if you are comparing at the 2 sides of the extremes. In real life, if a jeweler offer you an excellent cut 0.4ct, it will 99% be bigger than a 0.3ct. I don't think any jeweler will pick an extremely bad cut diamond to sell to you.

Any tips on shortlisting the "worse inclusions"/"prominent areas" that have them to filter?
I am no expert, so I will just refer to this: https://niceice.com/diamond-clarity-grades/
In real life, just try your best to find a diamond that is not milky and don't have any black inclusions on the table. Transparent inclusions are usually much more preferred. As for "inclusions to avoid" stated in the article in the link above, if the diamond has a good clarity, let's say VS1, to me it is still acceptable, as simple as that.

Also noticed I couldnt not get the free daily 3 times HCA calculator to view, is it still available fore x3 free daily?
Try to use another browser or use incognito/private browsing. I believe the website has some cache that is stubborn enough not to give you 3 times per day.

I can only answer you for diamonds around the same carat weight range, which is the 0.3x ct range. For 0.3x ct range, I will still pick the E VS1. I like the colour and clarity. I won't pay more for a higher clarity but lower color, and I don't feel like stretching to a G color the little bit of extra size.

As for 0.4ct, this is a whole new tier. Price difference is there. If my initial budget is at 0.3x ct, I won't bother looking at 0.4ct, so only you can answer whether you willing to upgrade your budget. If you are willing to do so, then I will pick higher carat weight over smaller carat weight.
