Major restructuring for Aker Solutions. It will split into two diff companies. Looking at the current scene in the industry, we better embrace the 'bad weather' incoming.

Wish us all in this boat the best of luck.

Fearing of what gonna happen next, I went to Singapore earlier this week and starts submitting my resume by hand to major oil companies operating there.

this pressure pumping is a unique coil tubing operation mainly provided by SLB and BHI. Pressure pumping mainly used during the early completion of well and also during the remedial job. If I am not mistaken. they are used to enhance production by creating fracture alongside the wellbore: greater penetration into the producing zone.

Did Oil & Gas Company prefer MBA ? Can someone tell me more ?

You can venture into consulting firm.

Accenture have their Oil and Gas division. You can try there
I was interviewed for SBC Schlumberger Business Consulting. yes they prefer someone with MBA as for the SBC case.

Hi all, I was called by Baker Hughes Singapore for the interview of electromechanical technician position (non-field job). I am a fresh grad with a degree in mechanical engineering. My first choice is actually to become a field engineer. Since it is hard to get into O&G industry, I am thinking perhaps I can start with this position and learn the basics of the industry. But I have some doubts, hoping to find an answer here.

1. May I know what is the career path for this position? Does it has a good prospect?
2. If I perform well, do I get to be promoted as engineer? Or I would stuck as technician for my entire career in the company?

Thank you and really appreciate if all of you can clear my doubts.
*
It is good that you are willing to take up the technical position. Most of the times, the HR of the company will consider moving you around ( change department/ promoted to engineer) after a year of employment. ( subject to discussion with your department manager.) Its Baker Hughes, you have a lot to learn and vast opportunity to grow from inside the company itself.

If you have another option of job offering you an engineering position with better prospect, then you should know which one to choose.

sounds alarming...should o&g workers be afraid?

It is quite obvious that downsizing/ laying off is happening in Malaysia but not on a large scale.

earlier last week, my friend from Mcdermott came to my company to sit for an interview.
Seems like most fabricator/ EPC companies arent getting enough job and start advising their employee to seek other opportunities elsewhere, same goes to Technip.

but the problem is, last year I can see more than 300 vacancies floating around the intranet but today, the number halved to only 150 positions across the world, and none in Malaysia.

The only safe company to be in right now would be the operator, they would be the last one affected by this unfortunate event.

How long do you think this going to happen untill the o&g stable again?
*
I am not an analyst, though I wish I am. But as usual it is always a cycle:
Prices fall, production falls, costs fall, >>> demand increases, prices increase, production increases, costs increase and the commodity cycle begins anew.

Things might be different now: as recently the major fracking operation in US results to oversupply of crude oil and now US re-emerge into a major Oil producer in the world. The fracking from the shale oil technique in USA has been widely criticised for the damage it causes in a long term but in an economic standpoint, it yields the best result as of now. When we have an oversupply of crude, the price now should be cheaper; no longer above $100 per barrel which is detrimental to the cash flow of major Oil companies.

The OPEC usually acts as a stablising role of the oil price, they should agree on cutting down on the production. This will create less supply and in return will increase the price of oil, but would Saudi and these OPEC countries would want to cut down on the production?

Why would crude price > $100 per barrel be detrimental to cash flow of oil majors? I'm no analyst, still learning the ins and outs of the oil production business.

Also while OPEC cutting down production might tighten up supply, everyone is still talking about how China's demand for oil is slowing down significantly in the upcoming year which should put more pressure on the price of crude. At least from looking at things today, I don't expect crude oil pricing to go > $100 unless there's a major war somewhere.
*
Brent crude price already hit their four-year low under $90 per barrel last week. They need to control the price of Oil so that it compensate/balance the cash outflow of extracting the crude itself. It is not economical for a company to spend millions on operation only to be able to sell the oil in a very low price, at this moment.

The OPEC will have their next meeting on November 2014 and we shall see how the resolution for this cartel would be.

anyone here received an email from Baker Hughes recruiter (Hirevue) for the digital interview? Graduate Field Engineer position.

kindly shed me some light on the type of questions as this would be the first year BHI implemented this new way of interviewiing.

I have a traumatic experience of phone intvw with SLB last year, and I wish I will not f*ck this up.

You are right bro..I don't mind if the people/freshie using CABLE if they have a minimum requirement to join a reputable company/Program or got an ANC/First

class title Because they really DESERVE that...and yes, that is their leverage cause they have a connections basically.

What i dissatisfaction is that the freshie who got a very low CGPA , but then secure to get a job in a reputable company by using this cable..I wonder,

are those reputable company operate their employment rule according to the principle of MERIT?

Belaja engineering susah2..dapat Grade ok and the other one, belaja cincai2,CGPA Cincai2 but work in reputable company..

This is so unfair..I know this is memang Rezeki dia..Tapi dia dah tutup rezeki orang lain yang sememangnya lagi LAYAK dari dia.
*
I am not trying to sound like a grumpy old man but sayang, life is unfair. I dont see the point of us here circlejerking on these people that use 'cable' to be where they are. The discussion brought us nowhere except to the same very place we are right now.

The wayforward now is to build yourself your cable. Get in the industry from any means you can, you can try from the below; sub vendor company, small/medium oil and gas enterprise and build your network from then on. slowly but surely. Once you are up there, you have a firm grasp of understanding on the business since you went through greater experience than the 'fast-tracker'. And now you can start helping your family/distant relatives/your friend's son/ your classmates even that are trying to get in the industry.

I am actually excited to see how this will evolve.
The merger of two largest service companies in the industry.

Though I am still in the recruitment process of one of this companies, I wish they will agree to come out with something productive.

I heard they wanna sell their asset in Malaysia.

Heard the process still in their early stage.
Most US oil firms are shedding thier assets overseas due to the recent boom of shale-gas in US.

Any chance SapuKencang will manage to buy the billions asset from Murphy? rclxms.gif

Received same email, I applied for BHe Brunei. Same position.
UPDATE : 9 questions, and I f***ed it up pretty badly.

Questions 1-7 were all about challenges faced etc. etc. Last 2 about why you want to work in baker hughes

I wasn't used to looking into a camera at all, I just didnt feel comfortable, ended up stuttering and using the wrong words. Guess imma continue buildin' that god damned MRT.
*
Thank you, I went through it and received their email last week on the confirmation of candidacy. I was just curious on the status since Hali just bought BHI recently on a deal.

No worries, keep on working on the MRT. Soon when the tender for Singapore-KL train is awarded , jump into the company that won the tender, learn as much as you can.
Oil n Gas business is experiencing their gloomy days I must say. Lots of Merger and Acquisition happening, not saying that it is bad, but there is an uncertainty on what gonna happen in a year from now if the oil price is in the current level.

Nothing much to learn as I'm on Power Supply/Distribution side. Rail Traction systems are similar, only exception is whether the traction power is 25-32kV AC or 750/1000V DC. In addition, my boss is a mess, all his subordinates/my colleagues are bailing out, hence me finding for a different industry to jump to.

Anyways, how long did it take for you to get the email after the Hirevue interview? I still haven't lost all hope yet.
*
maybe we can continue this in the PM.
Received invitation for intvw 29-oct-14, i did it on the same day. and received another email stating my status on the 20-Nov-14. The results whether I make the cut or not will be announced in December, based on the last email from BHI.

Good luck to both of us.

huii stop damning the mrt la. some of us here really need it. x kisah la how songlapness this country is, at least that mrt is coming. shakehead.gif

on another note, drilling and production is on the low, so it will be harder to get in to the job market. wont be easy to enter OnG muda mudi. mahukah nak slug it out backbreaking work, with low pay for a few years, less holiday??? and NO sight of land for weeks, no good internet and at some places no tv. if yes i have some service line within the drilling side looking for recruits.

i wonder whats the update on those candidates Baker interviewed. with the merger and all where do you stand? a few of the baker guys i know pon sudah sweating since most services baker is offering to client is also offered by halliburton.

well either way deep water is picking up a bit on the east.....dah ber minggu x nampak semenanjung ni...still in one piece ka?? cry.gif

The news already break in the houston that BH is cutting a huge chunk of jobs in the logisitc and administration. there are overlapping of business since the merger and they are shedding off the extra baggages.

Sigh, just when I thought I have a bright chance to get into the service companies, the economy isnt helping pulak.

Anyway, quite interested with the backbreaking work you are suggesting. Mind to PM me the info. Thanks tongue.gif
