Then you shouldn't have burdened yourself with huge commitments if you knew you couldnt bear the time away from your family.

My point is, we are the lucky bunch who got into the industry but here you are, moaning of your `misfourtune' while those who wish and dream of entering the field can only be envious of your paycheck, exposure and experience.

The big paycheck doesnt fall from the sky and it requires sacrifices and commitments. If you expect an easy ride, you are in the wrong buiness brother. So, suck it up and work your ass off to prove your worth.

Typical oil & gas worker drives big cars, own big houses. Many ppl envy those in this industry. Little known that the industry is quite volatile as witnessed in the 97 crisis where many were out of job including my own uncle in shell that time.

Typical you-see-me-look-good, I-see-you-look-good. Those in O&G field work, earning the big paycheck sure drools at a more normal work life with more time at home. Those with mundane 9-to-5 office jobs yearning to earning big money wants to slug it out in the field. Can't have it all, life's like dat...

Of course there are those with big paychecks and 9-5 work too. That reservoir engineer downstairs for example... biggrin.gif

But life goes on, we plan it accordingly and slog through the tough days.

UTP longest smile.gif I love about this because UTP force the students to go out and gain as much practical experience as they could so that they are competitive in the engineering market.

If you were referring to Shell upstream, the retrenchments were carried out because Shell wanted to downsize its employee size because it had gotten too big. But the compensation to those retrenched was pretty good.

Exxon also underwent the same staff reduction late 1990's when it decided to close down its operation in Kertih and dwindling down of new green field PSCs for them. But they screwed up in terms of compensation because those lay off staff dragged the issue to Labour Office due to unsatisfactory compensation. Rumors said that it cost its HR GM his job also for trying to 'save some money' for Exxon by not paying enough to those retrenched even though the money was there to cover reasonable compensations. This is a classic HR case where the HR's trying to suck up to the higher management by downtrodden the staff.

Does anyone know keppel shipyard hr contact? I actually interested in FPSO and shipbuilding industry but not from a marine background (I am actually mechanical)

I try calling their land line and was passed around before the line disconnected. When connected, i asked about job vacancies and was brushed off saying i should apply directly at their website even before i could talk to the hr department. sad.gif
