The number of arrests related to drug trafficking and abuse in Brunei has increased almost 50% in 2013 compared to 2012, with record breaking 679 arrests made last year compared to 450 in 2012. From the figure, 570 were men while women made up the rest of the statistics. Data issued by the country's Narcotics Control Bureau showed majority of drug offenders were Bruneian Malay Muslims, most of who were unemployed and aged 31 years and above. Additionally, the number of women detained for drug trafficking increased from 70 in 2012 to 109 in 2013.

In terms of citizenship, a total of 565 are locals, 40 Permanent Residents (PR) and 73 foreign nationals. Malays made up the highest number of offenders; 594 Malays (87.5%) were arrested followed by 33 Chinese (4.86%) and 52 people (7.66%) from different racial persuasion. According to the most recent stats from the CIA World Factbook, Brunei's demographics are made up of 65.7% Malay, 10.3% Chinese, and the remaining Others.

The 2013 statistics also revealed a worrying trend in which unemployed individuals topped the ranking with 396 arrests made. 56 of the arrests are made against government employees while in private sector; 169 people are detained. 49 other are working independently and another 9 are school students. The economy of Brunei has been stagnated since the Asian financial crisis 1998-99, and GDP fell 1.8% last year, crowning it as Asia's worst-performing economy. Unemployment rates has risen to be the third worst in ASEAN.

The Narcotics Control Bureau's (NCB) statistics showed that the youngest persons to be apprehended were aged below fifteen; 7 of whom were arrested in 2013. This was followed by 47 youngsters aged between sixteen and twenty years old. Another 126 youths aged between twenty one and twenty five years-old. 149 people aged between twenty six and thirty years old; and the remaining 350 people aged above thirty one years old.

Two most popular substances among drug abusers in the Sultanate are methalymphetamine or "syabu" and cannabis. Nevertheless, methlamphetamine-related seizure has shown a slight decrease, with 1972.72 grams seized in 2013 compared to 9005.12 grams in 2012. Seizure made on cannabis however shows an increase from 113.28 grams in 2012 to 752.27 grams in 2013. Other types of drugs seized include “ketamine”, a dissociative agent often used in sedation, and “erimine” (Nimetazepam; an intermediate-acting hypnotic drug and benzodiazepine derivative).

The Narcotics Control Bureau in collaboration with other local law-enforcing agencies pledged to intensify surveillance on illegal drug-trafficking in bringing down the number of drug-smuggling and other related offences in the country. The department calls on every level of the community to give their cooperation in ensuring the nation is free from illegal drugs.

Takkan tak paham lagi..the reason for the Hudud fiasco is due to economic issue lar. When there is a lott of civil unrest the only way to control is by strict religious practice. Its unavoidable now by SUltan of Brunei. Or else you are going to see him hanging upside down and whacked like a pinyata infront of his istana.
Look at how easy it is in malaysia to have the blinded people to fight for hudud to be implimented. Its called religion, say whatever you want once its religion everyone wont be using their head to think..only kepala lutut.

the truth is brunei is almost the same as malaysia.
the people are just pure lazy and hoping to continue to be pampered.
when they stop receiving aids from their boss, they resort to crimes and drugs.
the purpose of implementing of hudud is in light of reducing the crimes that is expecting to increase....

How does a country where the monarch has full autonomy or rather should I say co-wrote the laws in the country be worried about a revolt from the people by implementing hudud? They could just make stiffer sentences for hardcore offenders and no tom d*** and Harry can say sheet captain.

This not making sense. Don't just use verbs to show ur superiority over a language. Make some sense to ur accusation. The real reason hudud has been implemented is bcoz the Sultan has possibly became holier.

Nothing political as he reign we'll above the rest. And the minority isn't able to do anything about it as they only make up a few percentage of the Brunei population. There's only one party in the country.

The Code will mainly apply to Muslims, however non-Muslims may also be charged under the Code for certain offences including, but not limited to, drinking alcohol in public and adultery committed with a Muslim.

Non-Muslims shouldn't butthurt.

Feckin up bad huuh? I am willing to bet you all my life savings that it'll never happen.

Maybe reading too much international news have made you delusional.

This is SEA beb. The citizens are sheeples. Arab Springs will never happen in Brunei as the people are happy.

Even if they were unhappy, there's only one party in the country.

The ones making the noise are the outsiders, such as yourself.

I guess Brunei is saying 'if you tak suka...

So many stupidity in this thread.

Both
Brunei drug abuse soars 50%
AND
as unemployment rises

both are 404 and a blatant mis use of statistics =.=

I was browsing other sites when I saw this thread. Well, I believe that drugs are like candies. The more substance consumed, the more the user will be attached. It is like spending all of their installment loan just to purchase drugs instead of using it to more significant things. Oh well, one mistake could lead to more problems therefore, people must shun drugs.
