Factions - 1 to 20 in a day.

Prophecies is the slowest , but thats because it was the first game. They learnt from it and made a newbie island for Factions and Nightfall. If you play either of them as long as you do all the missions and quests in the island you get to level 20.

Another thing they learnt was the pacing and length of missions, thats why the Proph missions are very very long and tedious and involve a lot of running around. The Factions and Nightfall ones are shorter (the bonus usually is finish the mish in record time) .

The reason most ppl recommend you to start from Proph is because
a) the backstory for Eye of the North is there
b) you'll appreciate the other expansions
c) the slower pacing allows you to learn easily

most people never start their alts in Prophecies. All my alts were created in Factions

if you are in prophecies then most of us will not be able to play with you until you err , ... finish that part of the story.

after you watch your first FMV then we will be able to help you ... dont want to spoil anymore. Just slowly play la.

gw1 and gw2 will be very different games. so no point waiting.

classes will be different. only 4 from gw1 and 4 unannounced new ones.
skill bar will be different
quests will be dynamic
levelling will be different
weapon system will be different , swapping weapons gives you different skills based on class
traits system is new
elites will function differently

basically everything is different.

gameplay is very different.

for GW1 you have 8 skills, all customizable , you can put anything you want there even if you dont meet the requirement. (for instance, I have a Sword Rit with Protector's Strike only because it has 0.5s swing)

for GW2 the first 5 skills are set by your weapon choice , the first skill(1) is a spammable attack with no recharge. the 6th slot is the Elite , the 10th slot is a Heal , you can customize extra 3 skills for your bar, and modify all your skills with traits. when you watch people playing GW2 demo they spam button 1 and then press other skills only when conditions are met.

A lot of difference , totally different playstyle and game, so it's totally recommended because you wont get the same experience in GW2 and it helps set the back story.

No lag. Just have high latency which makes interrupting hard.

Guild Wars 1 being an old game has rubber banding , but it affects everyone, even those on low (sub 100ms) ping for some reason.

Guild Wars 2 will be run on a different server system, I think they will have shards instead of one big server like GW1 , so I dont really know about that.

oh god , i need to grind 11 oppressor weapons from Heart of the North. Really hope Winds of Change will give us new weapons which can be added to HOM.

normally i play asia or int server. i find american server too many ppl. i only go ad1 to COD stuff.

which mission are you up to now? The early ones are still ok, I only went really fast through the jungle missions because I didn't really like them.

a good way is to use the -image tag at the shortcut. then make sure your internet connection is free, load guild wars. it will download everything (textures and files and all that)

after a few hours, you will finish the image file, then the next time you play it you wont have to download files except during special events and patches.
