Guys,

I am planning to attend a basic guitar lesson with someone that I found in Mudah.

The class will be once a week and every session will take 2 hours. Basically, 8 hours per month. He is charging me RM150 per month with one-off registration of RM50. The beginner class will take 3 months and intermediate class will take another 3 months.

He will only teaches way to play electric guitar as he told me it is better approach rather than start learning with acoustic guitar. Before the class starts, he will guide me to buy electric guitar.

Personally, I prefer acoustic guitar as it is easier to practice at home and I prefer the acoustic sound.

My question:

1) Is learning electric guitar first is the preferred approach?
2) Do I need to buy all the accessories if I want to practice at home?
3) Is the class fee reasonable?

1) Electric guitar is a lot easier to learn on than an acoustic guitar. It has lighter strings and the strings are closer to the fretboard.

Also, anything that you can play on an electric, you can play on an acoustic but not the other way round. Example, you can play Yesterday by the Beatles on an electric but good luck playing Master of Puppets by Metallica on an acoustic.

2) You will need :

An electric guitar
An amplifier
A cable
Some picks
Spare sets of strings

I recommend a Yamaha Pacifica for the guitar, Fender Mustang 1 for the amp. Strings and picks are personal preference. Try 8 gauge strings first and if they feel too soft, then go up to 9, 10, 11 etc. For picks I use a 1.5 mm Dunlop. Buy whatever feels best to you. Also, buy at least 4 or 5. You am 100% sure you will lose 1 in a week.

More stuff that is not necessary but makes life easier:

A strap
A tuner
String winder
Cleaning Kit

3) Class fee is very reasonable. I used to pay more.

Don't get starter pack. Guitar is low quality, amp has a horrible sound.

If you can afford this, go for it

You won't be dissapointed.

A cable can go from RM 20 - 60 depending on brand.

1. if you want acoustic, go start acoustic.
2. depends on 1.
3. no. IMO, 2 hrs per session is overkill for beginner...either 2 things will happen - information overload or you spend 1.5hrs just wasting time.
basically 30-45mins is enough, then the rest you do on ur freetime at home etc...
i'm sure there are other places that do a more moderate 45mins / session / once a week / rm100 per month.

Start from acoustic. Starting from electric guitar might develop some bad habits in fingering and handling, as it is so much easier to be pressed. Somemore acoustic guitar can be played anywhere (very convenient if you wanna tipu little girl brows.gif ) without the need of setting amp and finding power source.

starting with an eletric while wanting to play acoustic is like going for your crushes elder sister cause they both has tits and a vag and likewise the opposite applies.

asking an internet forum waht you should get for your first guitar randomly is like going to japan to find your crush, but instead of doing that, you ask locals what should i do first?

either way u get no vagoo or wrong vagoo.

first establish the following

1. what you want to play, acoustic or eletric?
2. what genre you want to play??

I want play and learn to play acoustic. The genre that I love is like those played by jack johnson and to certain extent Kaki King.

But the issue is the class that I plan to only offers electric class and the instructor told me learning electric is a good way to first learn to play guitar.

I guess I have to look for another instructor.

Your paraphrasing is so rad. And your segue into the real advice? priceless.
Vag is overrated in the virgin eyes anyways.

on a serious note. +3kk is da ultimate.
heed his advice.

Identify ur interest properly.

Who are your guitar heroes, what kind of songs do u like to hear, what genre of music, etc.

Acoustic and electric guitars might share few same basics, but they branch out into two completely different realms.

As a beginner, I suggest u start with an acoustic.

I strongly suggest u to start with acoustic 1st. Pressing a chord on the electric guitar is so much more easier than acoustic. If u can make a chord sound on acoustic, u won't have problem on an electric. But vies versa, u might not be able to make ur chord sound on an acoustic guitar coz is so much easier and effortless on the electric guitar.

play acoustics first.

it helps build the finger strength on both hands. even strumming on acoustics is harder. if u can play acoustic, you should be able to play electric well. just a bit here and there difference but otherwise, it is fundamentally the same.

play acoustics only for a while...then once you play an electric..you can feel the benefit since your fingers are stronger and electric strings are actually easier to play.
