New user reporting in, early. I will be getting it by next week, it will be a Mid 2013 model(Latest, I think?) I believe. So, I've been a Windows PC user for my whole life. I'm not an Apple/Mac fan. I don't like Apple/Mac/iOS and I don't hate it too, I'm just kinda neutral. Lastly, I need an introduction. Anyone mind explaining everything to me? From a Windows user switching to Mac perspective. But it's not like I will be 100% totally dumping Windows, though.

Edit: OH WOW! Am I a little too late or something? LOL!

I'll need it before July 1st, before college commences. I'm not a gamer or anything, just want a reliable laptop that would not break down after a year or two of usage. My previous laptops ( Acer, HP ) had been laggy, problem causing ( fan broke down, overheating problems, display problems, batter problem  doh.gif ) which made me think-twice on getting a Windows machine.

The rumour about a new revolutionary Macbook Air later this year is confusing me, I hope I won't cringe if I get the Macbook Air now.
*
That is not the correct way to judge Windows. Windows itself is a very good OS. Judging from your previous encounter, those are just some hardware problems after long term usage. You should have just look for some other better manufacturer that can do a better job at that. Take DELL, for an example. They also provide you good warranty services if there's any hardware breakdown or what so ever. Not to say Apple/Mac OS is not good, it will also face the same problem after long term/excessive usage. I just wanna let you know how to look at this matter with a correct way, no offense though.

Let me throw in a question...would u gt a surace of MBA?

What did you mean by "surace"? Surface? blink.gif
By the way, here's a little add-on from me to my previous reply. I would definitely install Windows onto my MBA, cause I can't live without Windows with me. LOL!

Guys, I'm just asking. I'm getting a Ducky Zero DK2108 mechanical keyboard by next week. It is not obviously not a Mac keyboard, but will it still be compatible with MBA? Maybe at least just for typing?

huh? Of course can. nod.gif
By default for each keyboard, modifiers are arranged left to right:
Ctrl Win Alt Space Alt Win Fn Ctrl.

If you plug any keyboard (Ducky, Rosewill, Filco) to mac,
then the modifiers become:
Ctrl Command Option Space Option Command Fn Ctrl

You can rearrange the modifiers to suit your needs using KeyRemap4Macbook. For example,
Ctrl Option Command ...

So, mechanical keyboards by default is compatible with Mac.

I see, thanks for sharing. Both of my keyboard and MBA will be coming next week. icon_idea.gif

New user here. So any other tips and tricks to share here? In order to have the most of out of MBA. Share something like what are the bloatwares/apps that I should remove from it and how do I make the battery life last longer.

You can remove Garage Band if you don't use this app (you can always download it in App Store later).

Use apps such as Disk Diag to help clean unneeded files and free up disk space on your Mac.

Don't forget to learn about gestures (you can do that in System Preferences > Trackpad).

You can integrate your social accounts (such as Facebook) in System Preferences so you can post directly on your Mac without having to open web browser. You will have "Via OS X" under your Facebook status if you do this.

Lastly, don't forget to turn on Find My Mac in iCloud so you can locate your Mac in case it is missing.

There are more tips, but I think that's all for now.
I don't have any issues with Chrome but I don't like it because of some reasons.

BTW Safari is good too, and it is currently my main browser.

Firefox has so many useful Add-ons, but yea, sometimes it lags.

Thanks, but how do I do that? blink.gif

Go to System Preferences > Internet Accounts> Click "+" at bottom left corner, and you will see Facebook

Then you key in the username and password of your account.
Then your facebook will integrated with the mac.
You can post your facebook status directly using notification center, you will get notifications if any notifications coming from facebook too.

hey i wonder, is the Macbook Air hardware specs good enough for professional applications like, Photoshop, AutoCAD, and productivity apps? I worry the Intel HD 5000, is not powerful enough to handle the graphics.. And what about Intel Broadwell chips? They may feature in next year's Macbook Air. Should i wait for that instead?
*
It depends on your workloads. I wouldn't recommend this if you are gonna do high end production. If you are gonna just do some light stuff like me, then go ahead. My usual workloads on this are just web surfing with Chrome and simple/light editing in Photoshop.

i see. on another side note...... is 4gb RAM enough..? i intend to hold onto it for about 5 years if i get one.. or should i get an 8gb upgrade and buy online instead..
*
I am not much of a professional in the hardware specifications department, but if you are gonna maintain the same workloads as mine for the next 5 years, then 4GB of RAM should be totally fine. Just to be on the safe side, go with 8GB of RAM. Because you are going to use it for the next 5 years, and it is a very long time. Plus, like one of my friends. He likes to keep tabs open on Chrome, a very large amount of tabs. Even until the tabs section can only display each icon for the websites of every single tab, that's when 8GB of RAM comes in handy.

so as a reference then..., with 4GB of RAM, how many programs/apps/web tabs that you can leave open, before the system starts slowing down.? Any typical example would be helpful.. I'm about to spend on my first ever Mac, so i dont want to get a wrong buy    icon_question.gif
*
Again, this is just purely my estimation. It is not 100% accurate. I would say, something like this. A few documents in Microsoft Word, editing 2 or 3 photos in Photoshop, 10 tabs and above opened in one window of Chrome, that's it. You MBA might be experiencing stuttering or slowing down if you proceed with heavier workload than that, if you are going with 4GB of RAM. You would probably want to go with 8GB of RAM, because you are gonna use it for at least 5 years like you said. You might increasing your work in the time duration, which why you should get better RAM.

2014 = OK

2019 = depends future...

RM300~RM400 / 12 / 5 / 30 = less than RM 0.222 per day.... if use 5 year... just upgrade it.. ram is not upgradeable in future....
*
Yeap, rookie93. Considering it that you can't upgrade the RAM, it's best to go with 8GB.

i have never done online purchase of such huge amounts before. i worry if the package gets lost, so will my 3500. Is Apple's delivery guaranteed of safe arrival? .. From what i see, usually, online purchase, once package gets lost, the seller will say "oooh, i've already sent this out. go find the courier ask why missing, i'm not responsible" .. This is a huge sum of money for me, as i'm still just a student.  rclxub.gif

If you are worry about that, just head to your nearest authorized retailer to buy 1. Simple and easy.

QUOTE(Townshend @ May 24 2014, 02:55 PM)
One more important tip, don't forget to complete the charge cycle at least once a month.

WOW! I didn't know about that. I will charge my MBA whenever it's under 100%, even when it's 99%. The lowest I can get is usually 80% or something, then only I will let it charge. That's dangerous.
