Hey guys,

Continuing on the external hard drive format subject, which format would you recommend if you were in my case:

1. Work laptop : Windows based
2. Personal laptop : Mac Air

Current external hard drive : 1TB, NTFS format (no partition) with about 500 GB used up. Used as backup for important documents and photos.

I just realized today about this format issue. I read online on a website recommending to reformat to FAT but then I find out in this thread about the file size limitation linked to FAT.

What would you do in my situation ?  hmm.gif

Just stick with NTFS if you're concerned about the 4GB file size limit on FAT32. You should have no problems at all with NTFS on Mac, with the availability of Paragon NTFS and ntfs-3g drivers which should work well.

Or, you can opt in to format your ext. HDD to HFS and use programs like HFSExplorer to mount your HFS drive on Windows.

If you use Windows more, stick with NTFS and save yourself from all the hassles and troubles.

Okay thanks for your feedback. I'm not familiar with Paragon NTFS and ntfs-3g but will look them up.
Right now I use a FAT 32 thumb drive to transfer files from my mac air to the external hard drive, thought it's a hassle.

Kinda silly to have these issues between Mac and Windows, I didn't know about this before. doh.gif

Or as I have mentioned before, you can just remount your NTFS ext HDD with rw access through the terminal and be happy with your life.

The limit is file system dependent.

Can give exFAT a try?
Windows and Mac can read it and there is no 4GB size limit, kinda suit your usage I think. hmm.gif

So within all those formats, wic is more suitable?
Prefer no size limitation
Can read/write
Can use in windows/mac
Pls suggest notworthy.gif

exFAT is designed for flash drives, performance won't be good on mechanical drives.

NTFS should be good enough. If you must, you can use ntfsmounter (http://ntfsmounter.com) to remount the drive with read and write support.

Probably. I can't remember if you really can't because I forgot to try it out when I was on Yosemite on my hackintosh. But most said you can't.

However, starting 10.6, r/w support was already available. You just need to remount it manually like I said a few pages back.

hmm, if exFAT not suitable for HDD, maybe u can use NTFS for wider compatibility and stability.
and if you don't want to touch any command stuffs at terminal, install a 3rd party NTFS writer tools.
I'm using Tuxera NTFS for instance.

Yup. It's ready to go.
You can try by plug in any ntfs drive to your mac and start testing write(putting things in the ntfs drive) and read.
