Do you think it's time for Malaysia to attract international game publishers such as Rockstar Games to publish their games in Malaysia? Not trying to promote patriotism here, but I am sick of seeing almost every games released in Asia is published by Hong Kong, with the recent case being EA Singapore closing down and moved all their operations in Asia to Hong Kong department.

Also, I think we should promote PC games more often than consoles games, since the price range of most PC games are between RM110 - RM 140 unlike console games especially next-gen games.

F2P with IGP , yes
Paid games ? Unlikely.
I had the privilege to talk to a few publishers few years back during GCA and recently GDC. Malaysia is at the bottom of the list, in fact, we might not even be in existence in their marketing map.

Better not.

Just imagine all the censorship and banned games if they decide to do it here. Just stick with steam or other online services and we will be fine.

We see a lot with this, but that alone won't really help.

Last GCA was from 2009 and things might have changed with Sony actively promoting PS4 in Malaysia. However, if like what you said about GDC was true, then maybe we're still struggling to gain recognition of the world at least in game industry. Did you by any chance ask them why ?

If anything, I actually noticed while Taiwan and Hong Kong especially Hong Kong published a lot of games, they actually have less game development studios than Malaysia or Singapore. So I think if we can't publish the games here, we should at least have more game development studios in Malaysia outside Klang Valley such as Sabah, Sarawak, Penang etc.

That's not necessarily the case, at least not in Hong Kong or Singapore. While the games are published there, no additional game ratings are introduced there.

In a nutshell, too low market share. Purchasing power is rather low. And Malaysia is perceive to be an outdated country, in comparison to our neighbor Singapore. If there is anything, they will start at SG first.
Also dont forget, Malaysia is considered "IslamCountry" You sure our government is going to be happy with games like GTA series ? Remember the big fuss the Muslim had with the wall carvings in Devil May Cry ?

Well that's because very little people over here know about purchasing games, and the importance of it. For me, it seems to change now with the help of Heavy-arm and especially IMPULSE actively promoting buying original games. Being an Islamic country is not the point, countries like Iran and the Arabic world are doing quite well with games. If anything, it has more to do with purchasing power. The fuss with Devil May Cry has nothing to do with western world but Japanese. Western games have very little games that deal with religion or sensitive issues, if there's any but more on violence.

Also, I think

They look at numbers bro. Whats the proof they can profit in Malaysia ? Thats alot of money to dump in to start something new.
If you notice the charts, HK and Taiwan actually contribute alot of $$$ to the game industry sweat.gif
And our local people from MDEC are not doing anything about it to grow the industry. Has anybody went to any foreign talks and try to interact ? When Im in GDC, I believe im the only Malaysian there. Where are the rest ? I dont see Malaysians contributing to the games community which makes them noticed.
If anything is to be taken note, Richard Sun and Joyce Lim did a good job engaging with the games community to help them with their game Doctor Life.
And yeah, you got it correct. 1 of the first steps we need to take is start the market !

They used to say this to the eastern bloc such as Poland, but look where they are now ? In terms of publishing, they're still not as good other than cdp.pl but developing wise, they have greatly improved and have thus gained international recognition. Which charts, do you have them now ? While that's true, one thing that is undeniable is that Taiwan and Hong Kong combined have less game development studios than us.

Which GDC were you in? Well, the thing is it's probably too far away from us so maybe instead of actually going there, internet forums should be utilized.

I just noticed them, what exactly did they do ?

Im not saying studios, Im saying revenue earn from games in those areas. And they have actually participated in games events, forums and blogs, which I dont see done by us instead. Their write up's are also featured. It may seem small, but at least the community knows, rather then if we just keep silent.

They engage the games community in helping them to start their games studio in terms on how to manage it, how to recruit and stuff. If you notice, both of them are not from the games industry, 1 lawyer 1 investment. The manage to engage the games community to help them sit in during interviews to get the right artist and developers. This is what I call a good step ! They were also featured in Gamasutra.

I done a research during my college days on this for my FYP. Funny thing, the reasons for people not buying are due to the price, putting aside downloads for free. Parents besides price factor, also do not encourage video games as much sweat.gif If games were like humble bundle, is no problem. Problem is people want to play the latest games, but cant afford to pay RM100+ for them.

From their discussion with me previously, we all agreed that the focus is in China. Gaining China itself is as to gain South East Asia market. And they seems to be fruitful with that method.

Here is an idea. Try organizing back GCA and try to get it to be in Malaysia. CodeMaster is here and they gladly help you out with a good proposal.
Another is start a local games exhibition event , invite public speakers. Sometimes if we do not invite, they do not come wink.gif You will be surprise that is actually we Malaysians have never came up with a good proposal towards the games community wink.gif

That's interesting, thanks for sharing smile.gif

Basically it's the price factor. But I also think lack of promotion regarding video games are also the cause of this. They probably think it's very easy to make a video game thus they don't see the reason to pay a high price for it.

as in GDC and GCA ?

Well, the reason for the cancellation of GCA is due to lack of audiences. Codemaster alone won't be enough so maybe Singapore companies should join to promote as well. Could I know what do you mean by Proposal? I think PIKOM should be able to help organizing event.

Remember 1 difference my friend, Game Developers are passionate in making their game the best, hence many can commit to crunch time and forget about what life is sweat.gif
A game publisher is focus more on revenue and numbers. My friends game the publisher took 7:3 of the revenue share sweat.gif
Well, spending power of RM100+ for 1 game is actually quite pricey. My survey shows that many would support if games were below the RM50 mark, which is a dollar to dollar comparison to the US.

Yea I know, but some1 still need to keep the ball rolling. I forgot the name of the event, but there were game conference in the US which is funded by kickstarter wink.gif If i recall correctly it was formed by college students. Forgot the details.
What Im trying to say here is, be in a crowd of 50 or 500, we still need to start somewhere. Comic Fiesta also took a good 8 years to reach where they are currently.
Codemasters is not enough, true fact ! Maybe we can invite our neighbour SG to contribute some talents ? We can also call back our Malaysian's who have made a name for themselves outside of Malaysia such as Wan Hazmeer who is currently Game Designer in Square Enix. Im sure they will gladly take part in such events.
Too bad WCG has cancelled, if not that can be use to collaborate wink.gif

Proposal basically means a formal proposal towards a company on the details of the event, and how the company can contribute to the event. I did 1 years back to codemasters when Max was still GM over there. He and 2 of his peers came over to our college APIIT and gave a 3 day short talk. Lim Kok Wing and MMU was invited for that event wink.gif You will be surprise that game companies are ready to chip in, is just no game plan has started. And next will come to funding issues biggrin.gif
