Pomade brah, pomade..

There's 2 types. Water based and petroleum based. Water is easier to wash out but it makes the hair stiffer, while grease is difficult to wash out, but won't leave you feeling like a helmet head. Grease can be re-combed throughout the day without water. Water based ones you need to kinda wet it a little to re-comb.

Also, water won't give you the shine like grease do. In the picture you mentioned the hair is kinda shiny. My guess would be grease. Shines on water based ones won't last the whole day.

Is Pomade a necessary product to achieve the look? It's not that I'm not willing to get a can of pomade, but having a greasy hair isn't exactly what I want. I'm also a bit curious as to whether hair wax can achieve the shape of pompadour. I don't necessarily want a shiny look, I'd style my hair in such a way that the hair is neat and it has the shape, don't wanna really have the problem of several strands of hair popping here and there.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how necessary is pomade?
1.Disagree, with effort, people can go with any hairstyle they want, as long as they're happy. Not saying I look good with the hair though, lol. Just figured I pointed it out.

2. Currently, I use hair wax and hairspray to style my hair. I do not mean pomade, pomades are an entirely different product that I mentioned.
*
Pretty sure most of them with pomp uses pomade. If you don't want the grease, try the water based ones. I've used wax prior to pomades. It holds fine in the beginning when my hair was still short. I managed to get the small pomp using osis was and hairspray. But this kinda look need to keep longer hair until the wax and spray could no longer hold them up. Plus, I don't really like combing when using wax. After that switched to water-based pomade and now using grease or sometimes mixing both.

Based on my experience, I'd say 8/10. Never came across any product which can hold that look for me, even using hairspray which suppose to have a stronger hold.

And for what its worth, I think pompadour/undercut looks good on most type of faces. As long as you like it, do it.

That sounds great. Do you know where can I find water based pomades within KL? Just curious, how important is blow drying for pompadours? And when you said osis, were you talking about Schwarzkopf's Osis hairspray? I'm planning to use the Silhouette hair spray. And also very curious about this, but does using pomade enable you to style the back of your hair more easily? I notice a key point in my hair is that whenever I style my hair, the back of my hair tends to fall first, followed by the front, I am not sure if its because the roots of my back hair were not properly styled or the wax were not sufficient enough. Does pomade solve this problem? And do you use a comb for your hair styling procedure?

What's the outcome like mixing a water-based and petroleum-based pomade? Sorry I'm asking too much, I'm glad I found someone who can give serious advice lol. Not even the guides on the web help. Would definitely love to ask you for some hands on help in styling hair.
*
Yeah that Osis hairspray(its a silver bottle) and flexwax.

What do you mean the back of your hair falls? I'm pretty sure wax isn't strong enough for a pomp style. I usually work the wax in and style with my fingers. Don't know why but combing through the hair with wax feels like it doesn't style the way I want. With pomade, combing through is a must so that the pomade spreads evenly on your hair. I apply the water one first then comb to coat evenly, then apply grease on top, and comb it through again.

The outcome of mixing..Well, for me it makes it easier to wash out than just using grease. If I use purely grease, it probably takes me 2-3 washes to get it off completely, but when I mix (water based applied first followed by grease on top) I can get it off in 1 wash as per normal. Also after combining both I feel like its easier to re-comb my hair throughout the day than using pure water based. I didn't have to wet my hair to re-comb it as my hair didn't harden up. And because I use the grease on top it also gives it the shine that water can't give.

Haha, don't worry and just ask all you want man..That's what the forum's for.

Just curious cause you had one line that got me inquisitive. Isn't pompadour essentially the same as slick back, only that you create a pomp after slicking your hair all the way back? And I'm also pretty curious about how you mix both products. Do you combine them together or you apply one particular pomade for the back of the hair and the other for the front?

Kindly enlighten me as I am rather poor with hair grooming products, lol.
*
Yes, essentially you slick back your hair first (this part is where you get the pomade to evenly coat) and then style your pomp. Some people do a side pomp, some do a full on pomp like in your pictures.

I'd recommend JS sloane for water. I used both JS Sloane heavyweight and Suavecito. Suavecito smells like musky coconut while JS sloane kinda smell sweet like cotton candy. Haha. But I prefer JS Sloane because of its gelatine texture and the hold. Works into your hair easy too and doesn't go rock hard like Suavecito.

BTW not many brands available in Msia..If you want others you may have to get it online but shipping could be pretty pricey.

Thanks man. Fact is I'm already having an undercut hairstyle, but will definitely be patient in perfecting the art of pomp biggrin.gif.
By the back of my hair, I mean the part where the front hair extends to the back, the back part doesn't usually hold as well as the front and I'm not sure if it's because I did not apply sufficient wax to the back part or simply because the wax never really got to the back. What it means is that when I apply my wax, I assume huge portion of the wax is applied only the front area because wax is so sticky, sometimes I get so frustrated and give up trying to comb through my hair with the wax on my hand. It gets tedious for me to coat every strand of hair with wax. Sometimes, I use a small amount of wax and apply to the front, then another amount for back and sides, it didn't help either. For some reason, the roots at the back of my hair still feels soft even after applying wax, I guess this suggests that I apply insufficient wax or that the way I styled my hair made it so that the wax didn't reach the roots of my hair.  I hope I'm talking some sense here, lol. That's why I came to the forum asking for help.

In regards to Pomade, I have no specific brands. I'd just like a pomade with a consistency like wax, somewhat dry and not greasy and more importantly, holds well and ensures your hair is neat and not have strands of hair popping out here and there. The whole reason why I avoided pomade was because I knew there was grease involved and my scalp naturally releases it's own grease when I sweat so you can imagine how greasy it'll be when I combine petroleum based pomade. I'm just gonna assume suavecito's pomades are grease based? But would be happy if I could find water based pomades.

I'm not particularly concerned about shine as I've said, the shape and volume means more to me hahahaha. I actually had a friend who successfully styled his pomp without using anything but a hair dryer and hair spray. I'd show you his picture if I could but not in public lol, but omg that pomp made me envious. I tried asking him for advice but he definitely didn't seem interested in sharing details. Do you offer hands-on kind of tutorial for your friends who asked how did you style your hair? If it's not too much, I'd definitely like to ask you to teach me, maybe you can pinpoint my mistakes. That is, if you're comfortable, then I'll pm you.

But thanks. So far, you're the only guy with genocide who has extensively spoke about styling pompadours seriously to me. Definitely thankful for that. You have no idea how much this hairstyle bothered me, lol. #firstworldproblems HAHAHAHA.
Don't worry, I don't swing the ways of ah bengs and ah lians. Do you?
*
Hhaha! There's many tutorials on styling pomp on youtube. But you have to try it out. I guess your friend's hair is thick and coarse. Mine is really thin and soft so I have to use some stronger stuff like pomades. Suavecito and Js Sloane are both water based. You noted earlier that you don't intend to use grease, so I won't recommend any.

I think I kinda get what you're trying to say about the back part. You meant the end of your fringe that reaches behind right? I never had that problem because I slick my hair back first which means everything is slicked down. Then only I start forming the pomp. I think its because the wax is hard to spread evenly around your hair. You can't comb it through. Whereas pomade allows you to comb through to coat all your hair. I think you need to try it out man. If you live around pj you can visit evoangel's saloon. Can test out the pomades foc before you decide to invest any. nod.gif

These are the few vids that I watched when I started out.

Mine also falls forwards even though my hair is super long..I guess its because my hair is damn thin and soft..Yeah, I think your problem will be solved with pomades. Try it out man. Just do as per those videos and soon you will be able to style the way you like.

Haha, thanks. Will definitely checking on water-based pomades. How much would a can of pomade cost on average? Just curious as well, is thin and soft hair good? Rarely meet guys with soft hair. You're the second person I know who has soft hair. I am somewhat proud and unproud about it lol.
*
Well, my ex was always jealous of my soft and smooth hair. But I kinda prefer having thicker hair though..Makes styling much easier plus can use the lesser holding power stuff as well.

On average about RM60-RM70 per can. Quite a big leap coming from RM30 waxes.

60-70 is kinda reasonable for pomades I guess. Especially because Pomades are not as famous anymore according to most hair stylist. My Redken clay wax cost about RM 55, now I feel so cheated and conned. If I switch to pomades, I'd feel so bad that I splurged rm 50 on another clay dull cause my wax is finishing soon.
*
My osis wax only about RM30. There are more expensive pomades in the market, but not many in Malaysia. It's true pomades are old school but I believe its making a comeback, especially with the latest pomp/undercut trend growing so strong.

Fuuh, JS Sloane rocks man. By far my fav water based one. Grease can be washed out with just shampoo using my method. Just use the grease as an overcoat. Using grease alone makes it a pain in the arse to wash. I'd only do it if there's any events or stuff since I can recomb anytime. But anyway just using JS Sloane alone should be enough to hold a pomp for the whole day.

sad.gif. I just washed my hair and I can feel the grease on my hair still. I mixed both as suggested by most of you all. I bought two cans of grease pomades cause that guy was saying how I need grease pomades if I want it to last all day.

But now I regretted. I think I wanna sell off the grease pomades cause Grease ain't what I like. Any takers? RM 60 cause one can is new and the other can I just take a bit to use only. I just bought them on Thursday.
*
What? Ur selling 2 cans for RM60?

Did you use conditioner bro? There's a method to was grease out easily man. First before you shower apply generous amount of conditioner without water directly onto your hair. Let it sit for 15 min then wash it out with water, then proceed to wash with shampoo. If still got some grease left just conditioner once more then should all be gone. thumbup.gif

Some people will use olive oil also and some will use dish washing soap shocking.gif

Omg. Whaaat. No wonder, I applied conditioner to wet hair -.- Nahh, not RM 60 for 2 cans. RM 60 for the new can, and I don't know RM 60 for the other can that I used once? I just wanna get rid of the product. If someone can offer me a price that was similar to the one when I bought my pomades, I'm okay with it. I think my scalp is super sensitive to the grease cause it's trying to adapt, making some areas of my scalp itchy -.-

Right now, I'm trying to experiment with bigger pomps. I want my pomps to be bigger and slightly a bit distributed, not too neat cause it made my hair look so awkward.

You want the grease pomades? I seriously wanna give it away. Should have bought 4 cans of water pomades instead.
*
Haha nahh not looking to buy more atm.. Try opening a thread to sell it. Should be able to.

Oh if its causing your scalp to be itchy then better not use la. Not worth all the hassle imo. Thing is, I think it may be pretty difficult to achieve a huge pomp, especially since JS Sloane doesn't have that really STRONG hold. Also our hot weather here affects the pomades too. When I was in Japan during winter, JS Sloane held up perfectly the whole day. Even when the wind blow also my pomp didn't drop. Here when I go under the sun I feel that the hold is not too strong, especially if I sweat.

Noooo, I want bigger pomps sad.gif... But I hate using Grease man. I just tried using water based with a bit of  wax, it didn't help. I was disappointed.
*
Ahh..Its difficult but it can be done. Just takes some time to practice it. Try using a little more pomade.

Never heard of mixing wax with pomades hmm.gif

Are you applying pomade to damp or dry hair? If you really really want such a huge pomp maybe you can try applying it to dry hair. It holds better but might feel a little bit harder to apply. Also you can finish it off with a hair spray once you get the desired pomp height.

Hmm.. let me explain how I recently achieved my pomps. When I fiddled around with ways to have a pomp, this is what I normally do..

After shower..

-Spray quite an amount of hairspray to roots to gain volume.
-Apply wax/pomade and style.
-Use comb to readjust hair to look neat.
-Pomp achieved.
-Spray more hairspray to increase hold

Maybe my hair is getting longer so it's harder to style, or maybe because its the fact that I applied some spray conditioner to my hair last night that it didn't quite work out.

The thing about using wax or pomps to style my hair is that when using wax to style my hair, the pomp is a more evenly distributed pomp to give it that very casual look, just think of a pomp that isn't too neatly combed, but the shape is still there.

For pomades however, it gets too neat for me to the point where I need to use my hands to kind mess it up a bit. Hard to explain, but I can show you some pictures to let you know what I mean.

Sadly with wax, my pomp falls after 5 minutes of standing, probably because the wax isn't strong enough to hold. But with pomade, I tried mixing water and grease yesterday, the results was very nice. It held very well for hours at the expense of an itchy scalp and very greasy that I don't like.
*
Hmm.. So ur saying you don't like it too neat? Usually pomp style people want it very neat. hmm.gif

When you apply pomade you should always use the comb to distribute the product evenly to your hair. Think of it like slicking back your hair.

Too much hair product lol. All could be achived with 1 suitable grease pomade. All the time ure setting ur hair can go to washing ur hair. Well, not really since most greasers dont wash their hair and sleep with the grease still on their hair and the only time they wash it is when it needed to be wash.
Same goes here for me. The build up is what makes the hold even better.
*
Yeah man. I see many grease heads keep building it up for a week or 2. Damn syok.

I can't do it..Scared my hair damage..too sensitive cry.gif

This is the kind of pomp I'm looking for but the pomades made it too neat to be that form. I'm thinking of going back to wax. What do you think? Also, have you heard about Hanz De Fuko wax products?
*
Ahh, going for the "messy" pomp huh? I think that kinda pomp need to be style with fingers instead of comb.

I tried HDF quicksand before. It feels exactly like the name implies - sand. Like having sand in your hair. It's more matte style but may be a little hard to wash out also. Hold wise, so-so only. It's organic so apparently it won't damage your hair/scalp but the tradeoff is that its very pricey and the bottle is small. If I remember correctly the other thread on hair products has a link someone posted about a retailer selling HDF products online.

that thing is the hardest thing to wash off period!

oh and that lockheart is a collab with gonzo malaysia. i find the super slick is awesome! and the heavy hold? yeah u can do a very high pomp with that...
*
Bahaha yes I did try Schimere before! That was my first time using grease. I was expecting it to be hard to wash out but not THAT HARD and worse I applied it on the day I went to Port Dickson! I didn't bring my conditioner that day so I really freaked out when I couldn't wash it off with shampoo in the hotel. I must've shampooed my hair like 10x that night and I still couldn't wash it off. So freaked that I couldn't sleep also hahaha!

I just wanna use a wax that has good hold and does well in humid country. Seems like you have a tendency to get products that are hard to wash off lol.

Btw, tell me more about this Hdf Quicksand product. Getting so frustrated that I'm spending so much money on a hairstyle -.-
*
Have you tried styling your hair with hands using pomade? After you get the pomp shape with a comb you can mess it up a little using your fingers. Should work right?

Haha! I was interested in the quicksand because I hear so much hype about it that's why. It's not as hard to wash as grease but definitely harder to wash than any wax stuffs. After washing I could still feel some sand in my hair.

HDF is expensive if you ask me. The bottle is really SMALL. If I applied it everyday I can use up one in 2 weeks (or less) easily. They have other range also maybe you can try and see. Hold for me so-so, but my hair is really too soft so many products won't hold up well for me. Haha.
