Hi guys,

I am graduating this July (touchwood) for my business uni degree . however i do not feel like going corporate straight away and would like to enhance my skills in Mixing/Producing music. I started making beats last December and have found a great passion for it and have been passionate about music ever since i was in school. but its the real deal now since im about to graduate and i have to make plans for the future.

I am planning to pursue a course in production in any vicinity in Malaysia but im unsure about the courses the universities provide and which one offers the best curriculum. I have researched and i have found that ICOM, SAE and LKW does this courses but im not sure which one to really look through.
Are there any people with experience with these universities? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!

theres a few things in life that are certain, one of which the market dictates everything. as a result the logic is, if you want to have fun your pay is little. sometimes you get oddities but those are as per its namesake, rare and farbetween.

so choose, good pay gruling corporate life, or bad pay happiness in small rooms

T&C applies

Wouldn't bank on a music career in Malaysia unless u are teaching music. Work hard, graduate with a job that pays, self learn or take part time course in music, graduate then do part time gigs for fun.

beside local scene, there is internet, although the competition are more challenging.

art and music is less measurable compare to other profession, where there solid data on supply and demand.

because we be realistic

you just started mixing beats recently, and want to take on the local music scene which by far has almost 0 demand?

if you were really into it, before you graduate liao already running to find gigs and shit.

music needs no degrees, fact is those with degrees suffer more laugh.gif

You can do both, get a real job and keep your music thing as a hobby.

Just because you're passionate about mixing beats or something like that does not mean that 1) you're actually good at it; 2) people will pay for your beats.

I suggest you work get a proper job, but never stop mixing for passion's sake, and slowly build your marketing and promoting, like youtube, or a blog, or something like that.

A good way to gain ground in the music world while keeping your current job is to join as many competitions as possible, whether big or small, to see your current level versus other similar musicians.

Anyways, keep the passion. Just don't bank your career on it.

I personally have no experience with any of these uni/institutions, but what I'd recommend is this: do some homework.

Learn a little about mixing and producing from online sources to get some basics - plenty of those around for you to tap into. U don't need a lot, u just need to learn enough to know what you don't know (hope that makes sense tongue.gif). From there, look at these uni and investigate their syllabus and trainers, and gauge their content. Attend an open day or go visit and talk to them on site. All those places u mentioned are in the KL vicinity so shouldn't be much trouble.

As much as I love music, I have to concur with all the other posters here - its not the best career move in a country like Malaysia. Having said that though, I've never given up on it. Its very useful as an ability, a means to channel creativity, and its great with chicks (that's bullsh*t, money is way better hehehe). Consider it as a soft skill u pick up along the way to improve urself. It also provides great networking opportunities - the indie music scene at least has a lot of great passionate individuals who will make ur life richer and more colorful (sometimes for the wrong reasons but hey, such is life tongue.gif ). Go for it TS, all the best.

People telling you not to do it is because that they can't achieve it. Keep doing what you are doing and be sure you truly love it. Also, you must have a day job to support yourself. I don't know if music has no future in Malaysia, but you can always explore in other countries. I'm a passionate singer who is working on my vocal everyday instead of procrastinating.
