The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Be sure to check back on Monday for final figures based on actual box office.

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios' Iron Man exceeded all expectations, earning a massive $100.75 million during its opening weekend domestically from 4,105 theaters and $104.2 million since debuting Thursday night, averaging $24,543 per site. Internationally, the film has also earned an incredible $96.7 million in 57 countries since it began opening Wednesday, putting its worldwide total at $201 million after just five days! The comic book adaptation, directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges, was the 10th biggest opening of all-time and the fourth biggest for a superhero movie. Among nonsequels, it came in behind only the first Spider-Man, which opened with $114.8 million. As far as May openings, Iron Man came in at #8, just behind X-Men: The Last Stand's $102.8 million when you look at the three-day figure (not counting Thursday night). Financed by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount, the movie cost about $150 million to make and $75 million to market.

more marvels to come

QUOTE
July 23, 2006 - At the very first Marvel Studios panel ever today at Comic-Con 2006, the new film powerhouse announced plans to bring three new films to the silver screen. Each will showcase recognizable Marvel heroes, and talent is already associated with each project. No dates were mentioned, but these projects will undoubtedly follow the three projects Marvel has already committed to: Ant-Man, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man.

The first new movies announced at the panel was Captain America, which has already seen one film adaptation.

After that, Marvel Studios announced plans to make a Nicky Fury movie. Andrew Marlowe is set to pen the tale of the cigar-chomping leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. Marlowe's previous credits include End of Days and Air Force One.

The third project announced is Thor, based on the Nordic Avenger.

At the first ever Marvel Studios panel at this weekend's Comic-Con, President of Production Kevin Feige made statements that indicate Marvel is headed in a direction that will lead to a full-scale, live action Avengers movie.

The studio announced it's starting production on three new projects: Captain America, Nick Fury and Thor. All three figure heavily into the Avengers mythos, as do The Hulk and Iron Man, both of which already have movies in production.

In the past, an Avengers movie would have been unlikely, not only because movie technology was not advanced enough to handle some of the complicated characters, but because rights to various Marvel entities were scattered among several studios.

"Now that it's all under one roof, it could be done," said Feige. Jon Favreau, in a separate interview, stated that he always thought of Iron Man 3 as Iron Man: The Avengers.

jus his thought, how can there be 3 when they're not sure how well one is gonna be recieved
July 23, 2006 - Coming off of Swingers, one might not thought of Jon Favreau as a perfect fit to direct the screen adaptation of Iron Man, based on the popular Marvel comic. But at today's Marvel Studios panel, it was obvious that fans thought Favreau was the right man to bring the saga of the armored Avenger to the big screen. When asked why he chose to direct Iron Man, he said, "Clearly, Ant-Man was taken, so what's left? What's the best of the rest?"

Throughout the panel, the director shared his vision for the story arc of the film, the character of billionaire playboy Tony Stark, the man behind the armor, and the look of the suit itself. "We'll start with the gray armor," he said, citing that "you can't build a Lamborghini in a cave." This is in reference to the origin of the original suit, which Stark pieced together while being held prisoner in foreign lands (in this case, his imprisonment will likely take place in Afghanistan). From there, Favreau wants to evolve the look to the red and gold comics fans have become accustomed to, and ultimately incorporate the idea of the suit as weapons platform, a la War Machine. The director foresees several suits of armor throughout the film, and the look will evolve if multiple installments of the saga are told.

Talking about the feel of the armor, Favreau stated, "There is a sort of Robocop-like quality this character could have… I like the weight and mass and power," adding that this Iron Man would never be about martial arts "Power Rangers" moves, and instead all about heavy metal and heavy weapons.

For guidance on the suit design, Favreau turned to Iron Man artist Adi Granov. The digital painter designed a special teaser image exclusively for the Con that shows an idea of what the armor might look like. Of import is the center light on Iron Man's chest, which is round, rather than triangular, like in some Iron Man designs. In the teaser image, most of Iron Man is shrouded in shadow, as the final design has not yet been determined.

Favreau got a round of applause for stating that he hates the overuse of CG in films, but went on to say, "I always stay away from CG, but if there's any character that lends itself to CG… it's Iron Man." The trick, he said, is that "you have to treat something false as real in order to make it real."

To help inform the project, the director has been re-reading the comics and using anime sources like Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed and Neon Genesis Evangelion to get an idea of how technology interacts with an organic environment.

Favreau described the storyline as a combination of James Bond and a Tom Clancy novel, deeply embroiled in the geopolitical issues of our time. Since he sees the project as a number of films, he has opted to incorporate the "demon in a bottle" alcoholism storyline in future films after the character has been introduced and developed.

Finally, Favreau revealed that the villain that Iron Man will face in the film is the Mandarin. He also hinted that he might reprise his Daredevil role of lawyer Foggy Nelson for this film. The movie will be the first released by the newly-formed Marvel Studios, and it is set to hit theaters in May, 2008
If I'm not mistaken Tom Cruise already rejected the offer to play Anthony Stark.

The guy being rumoured now is Oded Fehr.

Not too bad IMO.

Anyway, the villain for the film has been confirmed.

Iron Man Villain Confirmed!

July 22, 2006

Iron Man director Jon Favreau confirmed at the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday that the villain in the movie will be fan-favorite Mandarin!

The Mandarin is one of the world's greatest scientific geniuses who is seeking world domination. Although The Mandarin has no superhuman powers, he is a superb athlete with tremendous skill in the various martial arts. For weapons, he uses ten rings he wears on his fingers that respond to his mental commands.

Marvel Studios has set a May 2, 2008 release date for Iron Man. Paramount Pictures will distribute the film.
