I actually used something similar professionally. It's a great piece of tool when you are on the go.

I used to have a DIY version as well... but it's not exactly a tripod replacement....

Can't use it to capture long exposure time
Even when used for multiple exposure, I'll still need to align image.
Nor can I use it as a lightstand
It may help stabilize shots for video, if I'm not moving.

It helps to reduce blurry photos (due to slow shutter speed).
In that case, I'll just increase my shutter speed or use an IS capable lens.

very true. It's only useful for stabilizing shots when you are out in the open. I like lightstands with a camera stand as a tripod though. Seems more versatile than a real tripod. And much cheaper too.
