hm, after seeing so much great mods here, i think im going to dive into these whole mech kb hype. i like typing anyway and I got the money to spare.
few questions: aesthetically, I find the 60% layout the most smexy but I have a few reservations about them. since modding makes the bulk of the experience, will the keycaps be hard to come by? What I particularly have in mind is a 60% keyboard with the diablo keys I saw on originative, are they compatible? Also, vortex seems to offer the best value for money as far as I can tell. how about the durability? I was given to understand that HHKB is the top end (though different switch) and simplistically speaking I can afford those as well (but since need to import, not too much of a fan); how much different is the build quality? those aluminium boards, are they DIY-imports or vendor products? |

QUOTE(quovadis123 @ May 17 2014, 10:37 PM) I will answer your question regarding HHKB (Happy Hacking Keyboard). so I take it when talking about build quality, filcos are the best you can get? i am well aware hhkb is expensive mainly on switch, but having to import something so expensive during the first dive is against my intuition.» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « HHKB Professional 2 have the best quality, on par with Filco Majestouch 2 TKL. Best quality of manufactured keyboard. However, HHKB Pro 2 is lightweight (530g), so, not as tank / solid like Filco MJ2 TKL(1.35kg). The most attractive part of HHKB is its layout. HHKB using cup rubber switch with tactile feedback. 45g actuation force. filco dont offer 60% layout though, but I guess that's still space saving. what about the vortex though, love their font.? I know this is probably stupid but i just have to ask, the filcos dont seem to get much love here, why? |

QUOTE(quovadis123 @ May 17 2014, 11:07 PM) Yup, Filco quality is the best. dont see much result on search. my guess would be no led options and price but hey, im new here.About the font, really depends on individuals preferences. I think quite ok vortex poker II stock keycaps font. Stock pbt keycaps, so very worth for the price. Pbt resists keycaps shiny. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Why do you think Filco don't seem to get much love here? i see cyntrix is selling vortex pbt but no black/grey. too colorful for my taste. oh well. thanks for answering my question, filco tkl it is. |

QUOTE(quovadis123 @ May 17 2014, 11:35 PM) Which keyboard brand that always show in the search result? Ducky? yeah.Filco is classic keyboard with no LED, no media keys, etc. btw last q - would you go filco tkl or vortex tkl if the criterion was build quality? though i guess since on the tkl model keycaps arent ABS would offset quite a large sum of keycaps quality. |

QUOTE(yuktsi14 @ May 18 2014, 12:59 AM) I started with a poker 2. imho, if you are just going to buy a good keyboard and settle down, or maybe a few keysets later, filco would be the best choice. I see, that is quite tempting. would the assembly be hard? is there anyone in LYN providing this service? what about the build quality v. the filco be?But you are planning to dive deeper, I would recommend you to start off with a acrylic custom board. some china pcb + acrylic + switches + assemble would cost around 500rm. later add another 100 to 400rm for keycaps depending on what you are looking for. 100 or 200 more expensive than a filco board, but you get to the whole custom experience. |

QUOTE(yuktsi14 @ May 18 2014, 01:27 AM) I have never tried a filco. The assembly is not hard I think hm, still havent even sampled switches. a guy is selling one of those deck samplers but out of stock atm. also, not a fan of acrylic, no idea how I misread that as aluminium There is groupbuy on 77 layout (poker + numpad layout) at the chinese community » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « I think hmwgbworld is getting one, you may pm him, he can help you. personally I already have in mind the end product I wanted, brushed aluminium chassis 60%/TKL thin borders with black + grey keyset. dont really mind about LEDs but hey, it never hurts. I really love those vortex PBTs. I really liked some of TS's collection but didnt knew initially he's a staunch DIY-er |
