I am trying to configure SMC 7904WBRA (all-in-one) modem to act as only wifi router to connect my wifi devices into my main LAN.

I have an adsl modem as router that connects to a switch.

I just want to use this modem to connect to the switch and allows any wifi devices connected to this modem to be able to use internet.

adsl modem (auto dial-up router)*
|
| smc7904wbra -------> wifi devices**
8 ports switch***

Here is what I have tried.

1) main ip for adsl modem (LAN) is 192.168.2.1

2) main ip for SMC (LAN) is 192.168.2.100

3) DHCP only served by SMC. (192.168.2.101 to 192.168.2.200)

The problem is, my wifi laptop cannot surf internet because SMC modem is unable to route traffic to adsl modem. Perhaps something I need to add into the routing table?

can ur smc ping the address of ur modem?
if yes, then u need to set your pc gateway to the ip of your modem.

Simple just disable DHCP in your SMC Wireless. Disable DHCP and then connect it to your switch/modem and it should do the trick.

You see , both routers are DHCP Server , meaning that both will issue the client with an IP. The thread starter wants to use the router as a switch , if we disable DHCP in the router [The Wireless Router , the SMC] , we're actually turning off the routing function , meaning that the router now acts as a Client [aka now it acts as an AP].

from wat he told us, DHCP server is the SMC. ANd i don't think the adsl modem with LAN is the DHCP too.

for the SMC, turning off DHCP will not disable the router function. You need to set yourself.

This will not work. The smc 7904wbra is an adsl modem/router/switch/wifi in one. It expects to function as a router and will do so via the adsl port. It's default route will point to the build in modem. So even when you connect through the wifi, the wrong route will be presented and you have no connection to the external adsl modem.
Do yourself a favor and remove the external adsl modem and use the smc7904wbra internal one. Then connect your 8 port switch to the smc7904wbra

The problem with this method is that I will then need to make the SMC the dialer. Cause for now, I am using the modem under bridge mode. I have a linux server to do the dialing for me. Hmm...maybe i have to restructure my network.

hmm..this smc doesn't have dhcp relay server.

I tried another modem Aztech DSL600EW and it can be configured easily because in the LAN of this router, can key in GATEWAY. With this gateway, the DHCP server of this router will pass the gateway info into the clients. Too bad this router have problems or else I can use it.

Anyone want to exchange router with me? SMC7904WBRA with Aztech DSL600EW.
