it is normal. chrome is quite memory intensive since it utilized sandboxing model for added security and stability reason, each tab and extension or plugin is running as different processes would result in a higher memory consuming. try use other browser like firefox or internet explorer, they should be more efficient in memory management compare to chrome.
Where is Opera? Presto based Opera is actually very good, but the newer version switched to webkit engine
Firefox is okay, but not on the older OS such as XP, cause hardware acceleration does not work on XP any more (as of version 28).
