The Marvel of V-KOOL® Technology

Based on research originally related to US aerospace and military use, V-KOOL® is the world's first wavelength selective window coating that provides a virtually transparent protective barrier against the sun's heat and radiation. Wavelength selective coatings enable the Stealth Bomber to evade detection by reducing the aircraft's radar footprint.

Unlike conventional solar control materials which absorb and re-radiate heat, V-KOOL® combines high performance solar control with high visible light transmission. Our window coating allows over 70% light transmission, and blocks out 94% infra-red and 99% ultra-violet rays respectively, without impeding clarity and visibility, day or night. This is why V-KOOL® is the forefront leader in today’s window film industry.

Alongside other inventions such as the computer, canned food, air-conditioning, internet and telephone, V-KOOL® Technology was voted by the world largest Science and Technology Magazine, Popular Science, as one of the Top 100 Inventions of the Millennium in 1999.


The Manufacturing Process

Our films are manufactured at Southwall Technologies' plant at Palo Alto, California and Dresden, Germany, tapping on a complex sputter-metalized, multi-layered dielectric coating process. This process involves the use of the State-of-the-Art Multi-chamber DC Magnetron Sputtering Machine which cost an investment of USD24million each.

The Multi-chamber DC Magnetron Sputtering Machine is capable of sputtering multi-layers of precious metals in atom form unto the world’s top 1% grade of optically-clear and durable polyester film, which no other competitor brand can do. Therefore, V-KOOL® coatings are able to spectral-selectively block off unwanted wavelength while admitting others.

Sputtering is the process of removing the material in atom form from a desired metal and depositing unto a polyester film through energetic ion bombardment. The manufacturing process starts with the polyester film slowly being fed into a spluttering chamber by motorized rollers and is picked up by a large central cooling drum.

Multiple target metals are arranged around the cooling drum. A high voltage is then applied to each target metal to create a highly energized ion bombardment. The polyester film goes through the spluttering process of 7 targets and the result is a 7-layer precious metal incorporated film. The raw materials for the multi-stack sputtering process includes a range of exotic and precious metal like Indium (In) Oxide, Silver (Ag) and fortified by Gold (Au).

After sputtering, the coated film is then encapsulated in other layers of PET, adhesives and hard coat, packaged before distribution to more than 30 countries worldwide.

Today, we have made another technological breakthrough with our Gen2 films, the world’s first and only 10-layer sputtered stack!
