Nestle is 1 of the most expensive stocks, if not the most expensive, at nearly RM68,000 for 1,000 shares.
To buy the min 1 lot need a cool RM6,800 - crazy to buy just to get the goody bag which I think would cost the most RM50-RM100.

Agree. The stock is way to expensive at 68.5 now. Even the min 1 lot cost RM6,850...not many people can afford to risk such a big amount. And it is by far the most expensive stock in Bursa. Lower down the price with splits and bonus issue to about RM10...then more people will be able to invest and that surely will jack up the stock price.

Expensive or not is relative.

If u can buy 100 lots of a penny stock, u CAN buy Nestle.

Nestle is currently trading at P/E 30 with dividend yield of 3%+, IF management were to do a stock split, yes it will improve liquidity, but it won't change the fundamentals one bit - you want people to goreng Nestle til it trades at P/E 50 times with DY 2%??? shakehead.gif doh.gif

Well for me, a company is deemed to be worth the sum of the value of all outstanding shares (market capitalization). It doesn't matter much what each individual share is worth. Someone investing RM10,000 in Nestle doesn't care if there are 320 million shares at RM68 or 640 million shares at RM32. It's all the same.

Unless one can't afford the RM6,800, then yea I can see your point.. but if u can't afford that tho, then its not really worth investing, considering the brokerage fees etc.

Just my humble opinion notworthy.gif

Many investors can't afford to dump in RM6,800 just for a single stock, specially those who r new to stock investing. Some newbies might want to start on a budget of RM10,000, and with this limited cash, he can't buy 4-6 stocks to do some diversification, but can only afford to buy just 1 lot of Nestle.

with the same cash, there are more than 10 good dividend stock one can hold.
Maxis, Gas Malaysia or Kian Joo are some of the example.

Sorry, my view is Nestle is way too expensive and the return is low.

Say you have 20,000 1 year back

Kian Joo get 8,000, PE 12, DY 1.85%, Price Appreciation 2.48>3.40 37% growth, you earn RM200 div
Nestle 322 PE 29, DY 3.4%, Price Appreciation 1Y 61.80> 68.70 11% growth, you earn RM5 div

The price appreciation itself is way too greater than the earned dividend.

Same case with Gas Malaysia.

So do your calculation, and check, if really Nestle worth to hold and give you both price appreciation & dividened return

So my take to the reader, don't too HUNG UP on Nestle, its not a god stock.

Dude, as I wrote, why are you too hung up on the DY? Its nothing to shout of.

Remember, Maxis pays better dividend. Stock growth pawned the DY.

Dude, as I wrote, why are you too hung up on the DY? Its nothing to shout of.

Remember, Maxis pays better dividend. Stock growth pawned the DY.
*
Stock PRICE growth is market-driven.
Revenue and/or earnings growth is driven by the business of the company.

Study the financials of Maxis vs Nestle, and tell me which has better growth story. wink.gif

Plus, Maxis has been paying way more than its earnings, and its quite highly geared (i.e. has high borrowings).

I'd rather hold stagnant but cash rich Magnum than Maxis. Well, I could be wrong.

I think you are getting to my point. Yes, why not hold magnum then Nestle?
Maxis is just an example, and don't fret, I don't care about Maxis or whatevea companies you will try to put on the table for argument sake.

My point is simple, div is not all there is and Nestle is not a good stock still.

Bottom line : Nestle sucks and expensive

well actually u put Maxis on the table, anyone can find a better performing company to compare, so yea we can accept your decision that you think Nestle is expensive and not worth it. lets leave it at that.

my decision to buy nestle is because it is the market leader in its segment/industry.

And it will (almost) never die. Maggi, Nescafe, Milo, Nestum, these 4 brands alone is a good reason to buy. tongue.gif

U can have Power Root, Ah Huat etc etc etc coming up, but no one can replace Nescafe.

With about 10% growth, this year u have DY 3.5%, next year 3.8%, next next year 4.2%, and so on. What's not to like? wink.gif

Reflecting on my rookie investing mindset ....

Yes, Nestle is an attractive company to invest in, good fundamental, etc.

But at the moment, it is too expensive, not just the actual price but the high PE etc.

Current price is well above its intrinsic value (yes, different ways to calculate intrinsic value and which one is reliable?) .

My view is, even with market leaders or good solid fundamental companies, don't get in if the price is not right. Nestle has been in my watch list for at least 3 years now. With its high price now, the upside is less promising than some other companies.

My 2 cents.

Yes, I agree with u in a sense, current entry price is not attractive.

But, if u were to hold for long-term, the fundamentals will eventually catch up.

What if it never drops? U will miss the boat forever (well, u already missed for 3 years).

Ha ha. I knew it that someone would be replying saying that I have missed 3 years of Nestle return.

In return, there are some companies doing better than Nestle though not as well known as Nestle (with different company fundamental).

My take is, if the price does not drop to my "wish" price, then Nestle will be more than happy not to have my name in their shareholder list! Ha.

Cheerio.

And the fact that u see its long term trend, even in a market crash it does not correct much. Pretty safe to treat it as a "bond substitute" to reduce my stock portfolio volatility.

If we use unker gark's formula...
growth 10%; DY 3.5%
then PE should be 13.5 or less.
Given that Nestle is ultra defensive, I would relax the PE requirement...
Let's say PE = 20 wink.gif

Thinking to accumulate APM, final divvy ex-date next week hmm.gif

Entered Bursa for a possibly trading position, or if the trade TP (RM8.30-8.50) did not happen, hold also not bad considering its 4%+ divvy yield and decent growth rates.

May top up Lafarge too hmm.gif

Yes, point taken.

Since the price was on the high side (relative to high PE), the future upside is limited in my view, i.e., harder for it to increase further. My bet is the current PE is above its historical PE. Well above?

Nestle is a good fundamental company no doubt but I still feel that the price is too high to get in now.

P/E IS high, but so does its growth rates, though I also feel that it does not warrant such high P/E (i.e. it may take a few years for the fundamentals to catch up with valuation).

But then again, price may continue to stick up there, and really wait for fundamentals to catch up. sweat.gif

A rookie's view here ....

One of the yardsticks that I use to gauge whether the price changes are rational or irrational (i.e., driven by speculation or not) is to look at the price vs EPS graph. An increase in EPS should increase the price and vice versa (I know, only in theory and not 100% all the time in reality).

Attached Image

Some observations:

a. Nestle has the best price vs EPS correlation (r2 = 0.93). So, the price increase is supported by its EPS.
b. Nestle also has the highest price/EPS gradient, i.e., every cent change in EPS will have the biggest change in price among the 5 companies (except Guinness).
c. For Dutch Lady, its price has increased more than what its EPS is supporting. Time for some price correction? Ha.
d. Surprisingly, Guinness' price vs EPS graph is similar to Nestle (gradient). So another strong fundamental company here? But note the higher increase in price vs EPS in 2013, maybe another correction due here too?

I am beginning to change my mind on Nestle as the price is well justified by its strong EPS growth. Forget about intrinsic value? Ha.

Some food for thought:
* why is Nestle price-EPS gradient higher than the rest?
* will Nestle high price-EPS gradient change later?
* can Nestle maintain its strong EPS growth?

My 2 cents.

Cheerio.

Nestle key beneficiary of East Coast floods, says Maybank IB

n a note today, Maybank IB said that Nestle’s broad range of consumer food and beverage (F&B) products could benefit from the donation drives for the victims of the natural tragedy.

“According to management, product sales did spike recently and we expect the company to benefit from donation drives, with large purchases of its F&B products such as Maggi instant noodles, Milo and Nescafe powder/packet drinks, milk powder/packet drinks, and Nestle cereals,†said the research house.

However, Maybank IB said that Nestle’s increase in revenue could be partly offset by its loss of sales in the flood-affected areas, which accounts for at least 10% of its domestic sales.

Just buy 1 share at about RM74 plus cost equals RM80+ and every yr collect RM30 worth of goodies is worth the investment; ROI over 30%. Can collect on behalf of others like acting as proxy to attend AGMs ?

haha 1 lot of nestle is RM74 x 100 = RM7,400

Maybe shares like IGB Reit where its RM1.30 per share and u get a RM50 voucher is what you mean.

They asked for my NRIC when I went there. Not sure if someone else can represent.

I said 1 share, not 1 lot (=100 shares/units).
RU sure IGB Reit gives RM50 voucher as door gift during AGMs ? What sort of vouchers - Aeon vouchers ? If yes, worth buying 1 unit/share.

No. U can trade by yourself just like normal lots, but beware of the high fee vs the price of the share, e.g. if U buy 1 unit of Maybank at RM10 with all the fees included, it will be like RM18+, so it's damn expensive per unit compare to if U buy 1 lot of maybank for RM1,000 with all fees U might pay just RM1008, so per unit is just RM10.08.

Yes, sure win investment. Buy shares for capital gains/dividend might make losses when share goes down and U do not have holding power. Buy shares to get goodies, sure get (unless they stopped giving goodies) plus get dividends (if they pay). And most likely get free makan (sometimes for 2 meals - b'fast and lunch)....that's Y U c a lot of retired uncles and aunties at AGMs.

Stocks are this year one. Maybe they repack it in last year box. If not wrong the past two years box is also blue in colour. Anyway, they might omit the two package of cereal during packing. Not a big deal though and will not worth the complain.

Its a good idea to post the goodies up for sharing else I would not know what I have missed.

Eh FYI, the AGM itself they won't hand out goody bags. You have to collect them separately at Amcorp Mall. Unless they've changed the system.

Just FYI in case you're just going for the goody bag.

Hahahahaha.....

sometimes the way I read....
rather funny (to me at least la)....
share market is really big money game....
and whenever I hear people talk like...
I trade this and that share for kfc .....
it's like duh.
Can use thousands to bet and all they want to win is a miserable kfc meal?
doh.gif

Or talking big big here and there...
about investing this and that share...
and then...
all that is important is the agm door gift?
seriously?

btw....

nestle tumble?

See one thing...
no one wants to talk about is.....
this share is totally CORNERED!!!!

yeah.... NOS is a simple figure that is important to know.
Small scripts shares is easier to move than big scripts shares.

Nestle has only 234 million shares. (go compare to those billion shares stocks)
AND out of those 234 million shares, what is the free float?

Understanding that and perhaps one can understand why NESTLE's per is much much higher.

and ya.... not so easy to tumble hor.

The free float is about 30%.. with Nestle SA owning 70% of it. And those 30% mostly held by institution, with less than 5% actually belonging to retailers. From the 5% retailers, mostly also hold long term.. so i think maybe 1-2% shares is actively traded.

Actually the thing holding up nestle shares is the dividend, which they have manage to increase almost every year since inception. You cant put too much money on those stability.. and it will cost you in term of PER. laugh.gif

Nestle did make a PR blunder in India in 2015, where their market share tumble from 63% to 23% within one year. Nestle India, shares drop, sales drop, and they declare $500 million loss. Now in 2017? They regained their market share, customer confidence is up, stock is back to all time high. It need a company with big pockets and solid reputation to take that kind of hit, and survive. rclxms.gif

I have attached the article here, on how they were dismissive, then lost the PR fight, and finally won it back... very interesting lessons who those working in corporate world on dealing with crisis. Now being studied by MBA's worldwide.

I would say that 1-2% is about correct.
Which is in my definition way totally CORNERED. tongue.gif

... and yes I would agree with what you are trying to say also.
I feel sometimes that dividend players reckon that their method is 100% solid.
Nothing against dividend investing - in fact, generally it's much better approach for beginners ...
and it's definitely way better than reckless punting of stocks...
But in cases, dividend investors should understand that in their world, shit too can happen.
Take the case of Amway.
Because it was an international brand and it was paying good yields, nothing could go wrong.
They fail to account that profits could tumble and with dividends could be cut.
When that happens, the stocks could fall.
So therefore, I feel they should acknowledge such risk.

Who knows.... if say... Nestle profits keep falling continuously say 2 years...
and with it.... Nestle's dividends would also decrease....
if that happens.... wouldn't we say that there's a possibility that despite the stock being closely held, the stock could still tumble?

correct ?

btw... what's Nestle (M) biggest money ball?
It's cereals? (my guess la)

Found the source of rumor...

QUOTE
Source: The New Straits Times, April 5, 2017

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has assured once again that Maggi noodles in the country are safe for consumption, after a statement that it had issued advice to Nestle Malaysia to withdraw its noodles products from the market resurfaced and went viral on social media. Its director Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the news was untrue and that the Ministry did not issue any such order to the company. “It was something that happened in India and not in our country,†he said via WhatsApp message.

Case of bodo people viral something that happened in India in year 2015.... which Nestle has successfully defended, not only by themselves but by food safety labs across Europe, USA and Singapore. Now Malaysia go buat kiasu... yawn.gif

Sorry my mistake... it's 82.. tongue.gif

Drop to 74.. around 9.75 % mah.. tongue.gif

Anyway dividend share is not 100% fool proof, but they have less volatility. If the business begins to sour, we must be ready to get out. I monitor this by looking at the net margin, lowering of net margins signal poor business moat as they have cut price to deliver volume.

Oh.... you talk about such a long time frame.

Generally, for me, on this issue, I observe how the shares are traded daily..
specifically the volume....
usually the long candle days are good indicators...

look at 21 Mar 17 trading...
Open price?
Close price?
Vol?

So how much vol was needed to push the stock ... how many %?
Then compare that vol to float.

So easy to push up yes?

Then see the next day trading.....

High dividend yielding stocks lose their luster when the interest rates rise. For Malaysia, doesn't seem like anytime soon but if inflation goes rampant then no choice lose. When rates up dividend yielding stocks will lose their attractiveness.

Not to mention all 3 in 1 stuff all loaded with sugar.

Depends. If interest rates rise because economy is good, dividend will get bigger as companies can charge more drool.gif If interest rate increases because poor economy, then whole different story. Even growth stocks also no growth as there's no demand.

If a company can pay consistent dividend, the balance sheet must be strong. Of course they can take loan to boost dividend also whistling.gif

Got read whole article or not? It is not about msg, it is about lead content, which the indian goverment accuse them for and was struck out after proven due to faulty testing. tongue.gif

They change the label later because they dont want more PR prob in the future. India require a product to label if they add MSG.

Mostly likely middle of next week

I have never seen them delay it after August but with everything going on that might be the case
