hmm.gif maybe it is the Risk appetite that you seek?
too much allocation in the "lower volatility" funds in yr portfolio?
focus on yr risk appetite instead of returns...else you may not able to have financial emotional peaceful days.

Cool.
I need to focus focus...
Small investor and portfolio diversification.. Something to ponder :/i

Start small with a small portfolio (i.e. not too many funds).

Then as your portfolio and salary/income grow bigger, then only diversify further as necessary.

That's what I did. When I first started out I just have a few funds.

If my memory did not fail me...

Hwang Select Income Fund (my biggest performer, I got IRR of 10-11% from this, but fully dumped (luckily) just before the recent bond slump)
OSK-UOB (now RHB-OSK) Global Equity Yield Fund
Hwang Select Opportunity Fund (u won't go too far wrong with this multi-award winner)
Hwang Global Financial Institutions Fund (this fund is already closed so don't ask me further tongue.gif )

I just liked the way he phrased it...... thumbup.gif

"Investing in markets is sometimes like trying to catch a ball. You don't position yourself at where the ball has been in order to catch it. In order to catch a ball, you position yourself at where you think it is going to land. So, when looking at markets, don't get engrossed tracking where it has been and how it has been performing. Of far more vital importance is where you think markets will be! Accordingly, using historical performance to judge where you think future market performance will be does not usually turn out well. Just because the US market had a great year last year doesn't mean it will have yet another great year this year. And conversely, just because Asian markets had a relatively quiet year last year doesn't mean this year will be a quiet one as well.
..........This is exactly like catching a ball. You look to where you think it will land, not where it has been. "

hmm.gif just how long does one have to position oneself there?  rolleyes.gif

I think this is applicable only to stock market as it is un-managed. For UT, it is a managed fund hence the performance will also depend on management team and not just at the mercy of market force. Else it will be just be an index fund if it track the market.

I think Unker Looi's statement is more applicable for foreign funds, as based on my observation, MOST local funds investing in offshore markets at best can only match index/benchmark. So, investing based on your outlook of the respective markets is quite usable.

But for local equity funds, yes, all above average fund managers can beat the market. Hence, u "invest" in the fund manager, not invest in the market. nod.gif

Should market crash, then consistent good performance fund such as KGF will definitely follow suit, but it is also the first to bounce back among its peer. I will use that opportunity to top up.

Another method I learn from my senior is to switch all to money market first and then do DCA all over again to the equity fund as the mkt recovers (this is use for those more risk averse client, not suitable to all investor).

Money Mkt acts like a safe forward operating base, a sort of beach head to regroup your funds to tackle the front line.

In essence, it behaves like a FD and is exactly like CMF. It i never meant as a perma place for your money.,, if they stay too long there, your money get lazy. To me, it is a launchpad.

I advise my unker customer as it is... by the numbers.

For Asia Pac ex Japan, I'll recommend CIMB-Principle Asia Pacific Dynamic Income instead of AmAsia Pacific Equity Income fund.

Most likely DCA at fault especially if you start DCA with rm100 instead of initial rm1000. After full year, only your initial investment of rm100 benefit from full year return, the rest are not.

The key is how to spot a market crash. Normally we know after the fact already in motion and our portfolio already drop in value. If don't know how to determine, better just stay invested and perform rebalancing or top-up. I think kaka has a preset % to perform the big switch.
