Guys, you don't need to hack or root the new HyppTV STB Huawei EC6108V8 as you can just sideload Android TV compatible APK files saved into a USB flash key/drive to be accessed via USB port available on the EC6108V8 unit. Somehow, my unit seems to allow me to install from unknown sources. The only thing you need to install from the Google Play Store to perform APK sideloading is a file manager (I use the lightweight
IO File Manager from
OpenIntents) to install the APK files (double-click on the APK file to perform install). I've managed to install the following sideloaded apps obtained from APKMirror or APKPure:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SideloadingLatest Google Play Service for Android/Android TV 9.2.56 com.google.android.gms_9.2.56_(032-124593566)-9256032_minAPI9(armeabi-v7a)(160dpi)_apkmirror.com.apkLatest Youtube for Android TV 1.3.11 com.google.android.youtube.tv_1.3.11-10311100_minAPI17(armeabi)(nodpi).apkiflix 2.1.17.1 (it is not Android TV compatible so you have to figure out how to navigate/highlight items in iflix by using the HyppTV remote)
iflix_v2.1.17.1_apkpure.com.apkYou need to consider what apps are compatible with Android TV device like EC6108V8:
* You must try to search apps for
"Android TV", not just "Android". The difference is obvious: Android TV doesn't support touch interface, it supports remote-control navigation and it is meant for
10-foot user interface design* You shall only install apps that support ARM Cortex-A9 32-bit ABI architecture used in Hi3719C-V100 chipset of this device (
armeabi or
armeabi-v7a)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_Cortex-A9* You can safely install apps with
160dpi or
nodpi screen density support as it matches EC6108V8's 160dpi screen density support. Otherwise, you will face a weird layout such as inconsistent fonts or buttons;
https://developer.android.com/guide/practic...ns_support.html* You can safely install any Android TV or Android apps for
Android Kitkat (>=4.4.2 or >= API 19) or above
but below Android Lollipop (<5.0 or <API 21). At least it mentions
MinSDKVersion (API) >=9 it will be fine
https://source.android.com/source/build-numbers.html* Be careful not to download Android or Android TV apps from
dubious APK file repository sources on Internet to avoid malware and virus. APKMirror is considered a trusted third-party APK file repository site.

Don't call TM Unifi or Google for support if you have any problem with sideloaded APKs; you are totally on your own risk and responsibility.
Just wanted to add on to this, I've attempted this and I couldn't get the APKs to show up, what I did next was attempt the instructions in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDW7lsPaSMk (connecting to playstore etc, on wifi, reboot)
Which did not give me a playstore, I then tried these steps:
http://prasys.info/2014/02/how-to-hack-hyp...huawei-ec6106v/which is the exploit to enable GApps, with the I got from the first post on this thread.
Install from recovery was successful but upon reboot I ended up with a lot of 'Process com.google.gapps' has stopped working, signing into Google Play (which is now displayed) doesn't work, while signing in through Gallery was OK, except it gave a 3D not supported. They probably ripped out a library for it to lock down the box.
After giving a few more tries with Google Play nothing worked, and I ended up having to factory reset.
This failed at wiping /Data, and upon reboot I'm now stuck with a Setup Wizard that keeps crashing.
Guess TM updated the boxes to disallow Google Apps, making this set top box pretty useless with the current firmware.
Time to restore a stock firmware.
